Description
E. BARNARD. Quarter-Boot for Horses.
No. 225,547. Patented Mar. 16,, 1880.
ITNESSES:- 1N ENTOR: a, M Q A 6W BY Q ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E,
EDWARD BARNARD, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
QUARTER-BOOT FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,547, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed January 9, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD BARNARD, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Quarter-Boots for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
Quarter-boots are used for attachment upon the fore feet of horses to prevent injury to the quarter of the feet by interfering and over reaching in running or trotting. V
The object of my inventionis to construct the quarter-boot to the shape of the foot, so that it'shall fit snugly and may not turn and chafe the quarter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of my improved quarter-boot as applied to use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 5v :0 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The body a, of the boot is formed of asingle piece of soft leather cut to the form of a segment of a ring, and of sufficient width so that,
. when bent around with the ends adjoining, it
will fit snugly to the foot at the base of 'the hoof and around the pastern. This piece is also swelled by crimping at the portion covering the quarters, and may be lined with soft material, such as cham'ois, if desired.
The lower edge of the body a is fitted with a strip, 1), of sole or strap leather, attached by sewing, which piece stiffens the edge and, resting on the hoof, takes the wear. Upon the outside of the body a, at the portion covering the quarter at each side, are pads c of heavy leather, attached by sewing along their edges.
To give the required shape to these pads, they foot in overreaching, so that'injury to the fore foot is prevented.
The boot is provided with straps and buckles cl at the front, whereby it may be drawn up more or less, according to the size of the foot, and secured.
This quarter-boot, conforming, as it will, to the shape of the foot, cannot turn on the foot, but will be retained as placed, and the quarters will not be chafed. By the above'descrihed construction I furnish a boot of durable construction, effective for its intended purposes, and neat in appearance.
I am aware that a quarter-boot has been provided with rear and side pads; but
What 1 claim is- A quarter-boot having the soft-leather body a, with stiff pads on the quarters, and stiffening sole-strip b, the whole adapted to be held in place by straps and buckles, as shown and described.
EDWARD BARNARD.
