' OPERATING MECHANISM FOR VENETIAN BLINDS Filed July 50, 1937 uv/z NT'UFE nnbmzuwe Patented Apr. 12, 1938 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OPERATING MECHANISM FOR VENETIAN BLINDS Delos Darling, Portland, Oreg.
Application July 30, 1937-, Serial No; 156-,505
3 Claims. (c1.v 156-17) This invention relates generally to a Venetian therein through W h P oj t e e 32 of blind, and particularly to an operating mechathe screw 33 which is threaded radially into the nism therefor. nut 30. The end of thescrew 21 which is opposite The main object of this invention is the proe bu B s provided W a groove 34 which vision of an exceedingly simple and eflicient form receives the slotted end 35 of the bushing 36. The 5 of operating mechanism for a Venetian blind bushing 36 s itself e ed to t e eeve l9 by which will be inexpensive to manufacture, simple means o a Center Punch to install, positive in its operating and having e s e 0 is p d With a spiral Slet 33 the major portion of its parts concealed from o ch p ts e ad 3 0f he S ew 3 view. The purpose of the counter bore 23 is to provide 10 I accomplish this, and other objects, in th clearance for the head 32. A suitable hanger manner set forth in the following specification 39 s p ev for the tilting ball 22 at the end as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in pp the p y which: A bottom bar 40 is placed below the tilting bar Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete 22 and is attached thereto by means of the ladder l5 blind, tape 4| on whose cross ties 42 are disposed the Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevati of th slats 43. The slats 43 are provided with slots 44 device showing a portion of the tilting bar in secthrough w h li y p the elevating cords 45 tion. which pass around the pulleys 46 in the head bar Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line 3-3 in n a d th w w d y a und t pu ys 41 to 20 Fig. 2. a hand grip 48.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along th li 4. 4 in Any of the various well known means for hold- Fig. 3. ing the blind at a desired elevation may be em- Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line 5-5 in pleyed, Since this does not form a P Of Fig. 2. the present invention they will not be described 25 Fig. 6 is a section taken along the line 6-6 in in detail e- Fig. 4. The elevating cords 45 are secured at their Similar numerals refer to similar parts lower ends to the throughout th ver l i Extending throughthe hanger I3 is a screw 49 Referring in detail t th d i there is which intersects the sleeve l9 and prevents its 30 shown ahead bar In adapted t be tt e prefmovement with relation to the hanger l3.
erably by screws II to the top l2 of the window The Operation of the v e s s fo lows: frame. To one end of the head bar In is attached When it is desired to raise or lower the bottom a hanger l3 whose portion l4 extends below the her it is y necessary to p e the Cords 45 head bar H] and whose portion l5 extends around y pulling on the hand p 3- 35 the end of the head bar ||l while the portion l6 ex- When it is desired to rock the bettem bar 0 tends around th t of th h d b The and the slats 43, it is only necessary to operate hanger |3is attached to the head bar W by means e co d 29 y pulling on Same Which ac o of the screws IT. The lower end l8 of the hanger causes the pulley 28 to revolve and the screw 21 e0 I3 is curled upwardly as shown in Fig. 3 to form torotate thereby causing the nut- 30 to move a bearing for the tubular sl eve 19 whi h i fi longitudinally in the sleeve I9. Since the nut 30 edly mounted in the hanger l3. The sleeve 20 is rries t e sc ew 3 a ts P j ct head 32 rotatably mounted on the sleeve H! which exextends through t e Spiral Slot 38 in e eeve tends into the recess 2| in the tilting bar 22. The 20, it follows that the rotary motion of the pulley recess 2| is provided with a counter bore 23. 28 will cause the tilting bar 22 to rock on its 45 The sleeve 20 has formed on its outer end a pivotal supporting sleeve l9. Obviously, any poflange 24 through which extend the screws 25 sition to which the nut 3|] is moved will bring which fasten same to the tilting bar 22. about a corresponding tilting action of the bar 22.
Within the sleeve I9 is disposed a bushing 26 in I claim: 50 which journals the feed screw-2l on whose outer 1. An operating mechanism of the class de- 50 end is secured the pulley 28 which receives the scribed consisting of a sleeve adapted to be mountendless cord 29. The screw 21 is preferably of the ed in the end of a tilting bar, said sleeve having a double thread type and extends through the cyspiral slot formed along the length thereof, a lindrical nut 30 which is slidable within the sleeve second sleeve mounted in said first mentioned I9. The sleeve l9 has a straight slot 3| formed sleeve having a longitudinal slot formed therein 55 intersecting said spiral slot, means for holding said sleeve against rotation, a screw journaling in said second sleeve having a driving pulley on the outer end thereof, a nut on said screw having a radial projection extending through said straight slot and into said spiral slot and means for rotating said driving pulley.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tilting bar, a tubular sleeve mounted at the end of said bar and having a spiral slot formed therein, a second sleeve rotatably mounted in said first sleeve, said second sleeve having a straight slot formed therein, a support for said second sleeve, a double threaded screw journaling axially in said second sleeve, a nut on said screw slidably mounted in said second sleeve and having a projection thereon extending through said straight slot and into said spiral slot, said second sleeve having means for holding same in a fixed position While permitting said first mentioned sleeve to revolve.
3. In a device of the class described the combination of a hanger adapted to be secured to a head bar and having its lower end upturned to form a U-shaped bearing, a sleeve secured in said bearing having a straight slot along a portion of the length thereof, a screw extending through said U-shaped bearing and sleeve adapted to prevent the movement of said sleeve with relation to said bearing, journals formed at opposite ends of said sleeve, a screw rotatably mounted in said journals having a driving pulley at the outer end thereof and having a nut thereon between said journals, said nut having a radial projection extending through said straight slot and a spirally slotted sleeve rotatably mounted on said first mentioned sleeve and having the slot thereof engaging said projection and means for rotating said pulley for the purpose of rocking said tilting bar on its axis.
