UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN B. CORNELL, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
HVIPROVEIVIENT !N METALLIC LATH-SURFACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. QLMIQ, dated August l0, 1858.
To all whom t may concern.-
' Be it known that I, JOHN B. CORNELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in the shape of the metallic sections or sheets employed for supporting plaster, which imp rovement especially adapts the said sections or sheets for use When combined With vertical supports, and which also enables the said sections or sheets to be combined with partition-studs Without the aid of nails, screws, or bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description ot' said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of one of said improved plaster-supporting sheets combined with partition-studs; Fig. 2, a vertical section in the line x x of Fig. l; Fig. 3,a Vertical section in the line y y of Fig. l; Fig. Il, a horizontal section of the metallic sheets and studs of a fire-proof partition; Figs. 5 and 6, views of opposite sides of a sheet-metal stud detached from the partition, and Figs. 7 and 8 are representations of a modification ot my improved plaster-supporting metallic sheets.
Similar letters indicate like parts in each drawing. Y
The improved form given by me to the metallic sheets c c consists of a series of double curves or angles, which enable said sheets to be hung upon a series of hooks a d or inclined pins b b, projecting from suitable partition-studs, and when thus suspended to form a series of pockets or horizontal channels for portions of the coating of plaster to settle into by gravity` and thereby cause the said coat-ing to closely and securely adhere to the said curved sheets.
By making the hooks ct c or the pins b l) of suitable length the sheets o c can be kept at such a distance from the Wooden supporting studs D D as to prevent the possibility of communicating tire to said studs through an ordinary coating of plaster placed upon the said sheets.
Instead of continuous sheets bent into the forms shown in Figs. 2 and .3 and the left hand side of Fig. 7, my improved plaster-supporting fire-proof surface may be composed of a series of angular strips c of the shape represented on the right-hand side of Fig. 7 and by Fig. 8, each of said strips being snspended by inclined pins or hooks projecting from either Wooden or metallic studs, substantially as represented on the right-hand side of Fig. 7. l
My improved plaster-supporting metallic sheets may be combined with cylindrical metallic studs E by means of hooks f f, produced by cutting into the sides of said studs and then bending outward the said hooks into a proper shape for holding said sheets, substantially represented on the right-hand side of Fig. 2; or the said plaster-supporting sheets may be combined with a series ot' vertical sheet-metal studs by cutting into and forming hooks g g at the angles of said sheets, and then inserting said hooks in suitable apertures formed in the sides of said studs, substantially as represented on thelett-hand side of Fig. 2.
That l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The Within-described improved shape of the sheet-metal sections c c', which enables them to securely retain coatings of plaster when the said sections are secured to vertical support-s, and Which also enables said sections to be securely combined with partitionstuds Without the aid of nails, screws, or bolts, substantially as herein set forth.
The above specification of my improvement in the shape of the metallic sectionsI or sheets employed in the construction of fire-proof plaster-supporting surfaces signed this 18th day of May, 1858.
JOHN B. CORNELL.
