PATENT OFFICE DESK STRUCTURE Peter M. Wege, East Grand Ba ds, Mich, aa-
signor to Metal Office tare Company,

comm t.mus-s)- The instant invention relatesto desk structures'and more particularly. to metal desks especially adapted for oflice. use.
The primary objects of the present invention are to provide a desk of the character above indicated having a novel drawer section con- 7 struction; to provide such a desk having a novel Iegconstruction; to provide such a desk having a drawer pedestal comprising a skeleton portion which facilitates manufacture, permits of accuracy in alignment of component parts,'encased by an integrally formed and jointless sheet metal sheath; and, to provide such a desk which is attractive in appearance, rugged and sturdy in construction and economical in manufacture;
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:.
Figure 1 is' a perspective view of the metal I desk;
view on line 2-2 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a sectional view thereof on line 3- of Figure 2; I
Figure Us a fragmentary perspective sectional view of a portion of the drawer-section of the desk;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional viewof the leg construction on line 55 of Figure 6;
Figure 6 is a sectional view thereof on line 6-6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a sectional view Figure 2 is an enlargedfragmentary sectionalof a portion of the drawer section on line I-i of Figure 3 but show- Figure 11 is an enlarged sectional view on line ll-il of Figure and showing the lock thereof concealed by a reinforcing element in the form of a tray;
Figure 12 is a sectional view thereof on line l2-l2 of Figure 11; s
Figure 13 is a sectional view on line iS-IS of Figure 11;. and
- Figure 14 is a fragmentary top plan view of the middle drawer. 7
Referring then to the drawings in which like parts of the desk structure therein shown are designated by the same numerals in the several viewsjthe desk top I0 is supportedat its opposite ends by pedestals or drawer sections, each comprising a vertically disposed stamped sheet metal rear wall II which is curved forwardly at its opposite marginal edges 12 to form vertically disposed spaced side walls] 3 each of which is curved'inwardly toward each other at their opposite forward marginal edges 14 and thence flanged rearwardly as best shown in Figure 2..
Vertically disposedangle iron members ii, are
secured adjacent each of the fourv corners of each pedestal or drawer section as by spot welding to form vertical sleeves and drawer guide 'supports'IS of angle iron construction are secured. to the opposite inside walls of the side walls I; of the pedestals "or drawer sections as I by spot welding, all as best shown in Figure 2.
Horizontally disposed flanged channel bar drawer guides II. are secured to the oppositely disposed forward vertical angle iron members, l5
and to the drawer guide supports l6 as by spot welding, the forward ends of each drawer guide bein provided with a resilient drawer bumper= I8 of rubber or the like which projects outwardlyor forwardly therefrom and the lengths of each drawer guide-are provided with a depending drawer stop l9 struck therefrom, as best shown in Figure 3. v
Legs for supporting the desk at each of its four corners comprisea tubular tapered sleeve 20 having a foot 2| spring pressed thereon and having a ring 22 likewise spring pressed to the upper end thereof. An inner tubular element 23 is transversely formed of sheet metal and its adjoining marginal edges are slightly spaced apart rendering the lower tubular portion yieldingly compressible. The upper portion of the tubular element, 23 is inserted and secured, within vertically disposed sleeves formed by the angle iron members l5 secured to the side walls 3 l3 and to theseveral side walls l3 and the end wall It at their junctures or'at each of the four corners of the drawer'pedestal as best. shown in Figures 5 and 6. v
Drawers for the several pedestals or drawer sections comprise spaced parallel sidewalls 24 whose upper marginal edges 25 are flanged inwardly thence downwardly, a front wall- 26, a rear wall 21 whose upper ma'rginal edge 28 exdrawer is slid outwardly (see Figure'i), and a tends above the upper marginal edges 25 of the side walls for contacting the'atops I! when the tween.
thence upwardly, thence outwardly, and finally upwardly to form the side walls 24, all as best shown in Figures 8 and 12. The drawer bottoms when thus slidably supported at III by their oppositely disposed drawer guides I! have a portion disposed between-and depending below the o positely disposed guide supports ll which construction provides for rigidity and nonbinding sliding operation. 7 1 r The several desk drawers may if ,desiredbe provided with oppositely disposed spring tensioned arcuate plates 3] adjustably sprung bew tween the upper marginal edges 2! and the groove formed by thedepressed formation III in the'lower marginallengths of the opposite side walls 24 of the draweryas best shown in' Figures 8' and 9; These arcuate plates are pro vided with integrally formed and spaced inwardly extending transverse portions 3 I I! and spacer plates 33 may be detachably disposed therebe- Since these arcuate plates areadjustably sprung into place, they may be moved forwardly or rearwardly along the insides of the side walls. of the draweras indicated by the ing through the slits, the corners 80, ll of the folded plate being oppositely turned outwardly at one end thereof.
It will thusbe seen that the desk structure herein shown and described has a novel drawer section construction, a novel leg construction,"
that the desk may if desired be provided with sectional drawers which drawer sections may be readily changed as to sectional width, and that in desks which are provided with a lock, the
- lockmay, if desired, be concealed by a reinforcing element in the form of a tray.
While but several specific embodiments of this I invention have beenherein shown and described,
it will be understood that numerous details of the constructions shown'may be altered or omitted without departing from thespirit of this invention as defined by the followingclaims. I claim:
- frame provided with tubular corner posts, tubular members having upper portions longitudi nally split and compressibly fitted within and depending from each tubular corner post, tubular sleeves fitted on the tubular members, and means carried by the upper ends of the sleeves and supporting the skeleton frame.
1; a drawer pedestal including a skeleton 2. A drawer pedestal including a skeletonframe provided with tubular corner posts, tubular members having upper portions longitudinally split and compressibly fitted within and depending from each tubular corner post, downwardly tapered tubular sleeves having their lower ends fitted on the tubular members and their upper ends spaced therefrom, and means carried by the upper ends of the sleeves and closing the space between .the upper ends of the' sleeves and the tubular members and support- 7 ing the corner posts and the skeleton frame.
