MAKE-UP CAP Filed Nov. 10, 1938 Patented May 7, 1940 UNITED STATES mass v PATENT OFFICE MAKE-UP GAP Audrey E. Dixon, San Francisco, Calif. Application November 10, 1938, Serial No. 239,862
' 2 Claims. (01. 132-49) This invention relates to a make-up cap, and it is an object of the invention to provide an article of this kind which, when applied, serves to protect the hair of the user during the period .5 make-up is being applied and also during the period of cleansing the face by water, lotions, or
and more particularly on the back of the head 15 and nape of the neck where the liability is greatest for the cleansing water, lotions or creams to soil the hair, curls, waves and coifiure.
An additional object of the invention is to'provide a device of this kind including amember to go be placed on the head over the hair and which member when applied substantially conforms to the hair line and wherein the member is so constructed as to readily extend, over a coiffure should the same extend beyond the hair line.
5 A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind including a member adapted to be placed upon the head in a manner to afford protection to the hair yet permitting exposure of the entire face, neck and ears whereby the de- 30 sired make-up may be readily applied or removed without injury to the hair. 7
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising a member for placement on the head over the hair to protect the same, together with a strap member associated with the protecting member and which strap member may be readily disposed under the chin of the user to support the same or which straplike member may be readily disposed across the 40 nape of the neck to assure a more efiective protection for the coiffure while washing the neck and/or applying creams and lotions thereon and under other conditions such as resting periods or exercising periods.
45 The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved makeup cap whereby certain important advantages are attained and the article rendered simpler, 50 less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. Q In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: I
Figure 1 is a view of somewhata diagrammatic character and inside elevation illustrating a 6 make-up cap constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied po-.
sition; I
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the side of the device opposite, to that illustrated in Figure 10 1 with the strap in a second position to serve as a chin support; 1
Figure 3 is a view in rear elevation of the device as herein disclosed and in applied position;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevational view illustrating a portion of the protecting member and adjacent end portion of the chin strap in separated relation.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevational view illustrating a further embodiment-of my invention. go
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, I denotes a protecting member of desired dimensions and which is constructed and formed in a manner to be placedon the head of the user over the hair with the marginal portions of vthe member I formed to closely conform to the hair line on the face. This member I is made of net fabric, preferably two-ply, although it is, to be understood that it can be made of such other material as desired. As the detailed construction of themember I forms no particular part of the invention a description thereof is believed to be unnecessaryexcept to particularly point out that the forward or front-marginal portion of the member I has applied thereto a binding 2 of biastape. This tape 2 is of a length to extend entirely across the brow of the head to which the cap is applied at the hair line and terminates at opposite sides of the head rearwardly of the ears and at theopposite sides of the back or w nape of the neck at the hair line. The rear marginal portion of the member I which extends across the nape or back of the neck at the hair line has applied therjetoan elastic binding 3 which, in addition to assuring a close fit of the marginal portion of the member I to the head, also allows the member I to readily adjust itself to heads of varying sizes. While the bindings 2 and 3 snugly contact with the head at the hair line, it is to be stated that the body portion of the member I possesses sufficient fullness to readily enclose any part of a coiifure or any. portion of the hair which may extend beyond the hair line.
Securely anchored to the member I at one side binding 2 is a ring-like member 4, preferably rigid and of a pronounced internal diameter. This ring member 4 is freely threaded through a loop 5 at one end portion of a strap 6. The strap 6 is formed of stretchable material, preferably soft rubber, and is broad throughout the major portion of its length with each end portion preferably reduced in width. The end portion of the strap 6 remote from its connection with the member 4 carries a buckle l of any desired type with which coacts an elongated tab 8 which, in the present embodiment of the invention, constitutes a continuation of the binding 2.
This strap 6 serves for two essential purposes, namely, to provide additional protection to the hair at the back or nape of the neck or to overlie the chin to provide a support or mold therefor.
The ring member 4 readily permits the strap 6 to be adjusted for either of said uses as may be desired and is effectively maintained in either of such positions by proper connection between the tab 8 and the buckle I. It is believed to be obvious that the connection between the buckle .l and the tab 8 is adjustable so that the strap may be held in place under desired tension and at the same time the lower forward portion of the member I has proper tension thereon at opposite sides to assure the maintenance of the member I in applied position upon the head over the hair,
The strap 6 is provided with the relatively small vent openings 9 to aid circulation and ventilation, to restrain perspiration and to allow for evaporation as it occurs, to eliminate and avoid itching or sore skin under the strap when used as a chin support or mold. It is also to be particularly noted that the major portion of the strap is broad enough to efiectively cover the under chin portion of the face comfortably and firmly but permitting such adjustability to compensate for the bending of the head in any direction.
When the strap 6 is disposed across the back or nape of the neck to provide a further protection for the hair, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, the upper portion of the strap 6 overlaps the rear portion of the member I and the elasticity or stretchability of the strap 6 permits the same to readily adjust itself to compensate for either an abundance of hair or a thin amount of hair.
When disposed across the back or nape of the neck, the strap 6 provides further protection for the hair where protection is most needed when cleansing the face, ears and neck and when the strap E is positioned across the back or nape of the neck it is to be noted, as illustrated in Figure 1, that the forward marginal portion of the member I at each side of the head is positioned inwardly of the ear so that said ear as Well as the nape or back of the neck will be effectively exposed for cleansing and also, of course, equally exposed for the application of make-up.
When the strap 6 is used as a chin support or mold, as illustrated in Figure 1, it serves to strengthen tired and sagging muscles, remove sagging or double chins or prevent the same, and which advantageous results are accomplished thereof and adjacent to an end portion of the at the same time the hair is being supported and protected.
While I have hereinbefore particularly referred to my device as a make-up cap, it is to be stated that it can also be referred to as a hair net. My improved device when in applied position affords protection to the whole hair, curls, waves, and coiffure when sleeping or lying. Under these conditions the strap 6 will be disposed across the nape or back of the neck unless it should be desired by the user to apply the strap under the chin as a cure or prevention of sagging chin, etc., while the user is sleeping.
It is also to be made clear that my improved device serves the equal advantage as a protection during removal of make-up as well as during the application of makeuip.
As illustrated in Figure 5, one end portion of the strap It, which is to extend either across the nape of the neck or under the chin, is provided at its free end with an elastic tab H which is adjustably connected with a hook buckle l2. This hook buckle is adapted to be engaged through an eye M carried by an end portion of the for ward or front binding tape l5.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a make-up cap constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A make-up cap comprising a member constructed and arranged to fit upon the head of a person over the hair, the marginal portions of the member being formed to substantially conform to the hair line, a substantially rigid ringlike member secured to the lower portion of the member at one side thereof, a relatively broad strap having a loop at one end through which the ring-like member is freely threaded, and coacting means carried by the opposite end portion of the strap and the opposite lower portion of the member for detachably holding the strap in supporting position under the chin of the personor across the nape of the neck.
2. A make-up cap comprising a member constructed and arranged to fit upon the head of a person over the hair, the marginal portions of the member being formed to substantially conform to the hair line, a substantially rigid ringlike member secured to the lower portion of the first member at one side thereof, a relatively broad strap having a loop atone end through which the ring-like member is freely threaded, an elastic tape carried by the opposite end portion of the strap, and coacting means carried by said tape and the opposite end portion of the first member for detachably holding the strap in supporting position under the chin of the person or across the nape of the neck.
