Description
NOV 28, R. L SHAW ROAD CONSTRUCTION Filed July 2o, 1938 Attorneys Patented Nov. 28, 1939.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in roadway constructions and more particularly to a reinforced road.
The principal object of the present invention is 5 to provide a road construction wherein a concrete or similar formed grid is employed between the usual base course and subgrade for the purpose of lessening the cost of road construction without sacrificing any of the durability of a well constructed highway.
These and other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawing- Figure l represents a cross sectional view of the highway.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the reinforced grid.
Referring to the drawing lwherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Figure 1 that numeral 5 represents the usual subgrade on which is placed the pre-prepared concretev grid 5. Over the grid 6 is placed the non-plastic aggre- 25 gate base course 'l and upon the course 1 is placed the matrix type oil pavement 8 or some other similar pavement. shoulders. y
The grid 6 is preferably constructed of concrete reinforced by cross bars l0, the grid forming openings l l, but it is also feasible that the grid be constructed of some asphaltic substance.
They purpose of the foregoing construction is to resist the tensile strains set up in the base coarse in distributing the wheel load over sufficient area of the subgrade to hold the same.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, itis to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as 15 claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A pavement comprising a slab base, a layer of granular material disposed on the slab base, and a relatively rigid layer disposed on the granular layer, said base being of a concretious moulded form having vertically extending openings therein and reinforcing members extending longitudinally and transversely therein.
