Description
Nov. 21, 1939.
F. SCHALLGRUBER CIGARETTE, CIGAR, AND THE LIKE Filed May 16, 1938 WITNESS Patented Nov. 21, 1939 UNITED STATES 2,180,370 CIGARETTE, CIGAR, AND! THE LIKE Frederick S challgruber, Bogota, Colombia Application my 10, 1938, SerialNo. 208,273
2 Claims. (01. 131-32) secured thereto .has been that the fumes generated by the chemical composition of the igniting element were mixed with the tobacco smoke 15 when the smoker began to draw air through the cigarette to assist in igniting the combustible or tobacco content thereof.
One of the principal objects of my invention is provide a cigarette equipped with an igniting element so arranged and constructed to be maintained in anisolated position from the end of the cigarette until such time as the fumes and gases therefrom are substantially exhausted thereby eliminating the mixture of the same with the tobacco smoke.
Another object of my invention is to provide a cigarette of the above described character having an igniting element attached thereto so arranged and constructed as to be automatically moved to an isolated position before the same is ignited, thereby preventing the fumes or gases from said element entering the cigarette during the lighting operation thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide a 35 cigarette of the above described character wherein the igniting element attached to the end of the cigarette is automatically ignited upon removal of a cigarette from a package.
A still further object of my invention is to 40 provide manually operable means for igniting the igniting element and also functioning to isolate said element from the tobacco in advance of the igniting of said element.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a cigarette equipped withan igniting element composed of a plurality of combustible materials one ignitible by the other, the latter being of a content similar to the smokable content of the cigarette.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of package of cigarettes in partly opened condition and wherein a plurality of my improved cigarettes are illustrated, one of said cigarettes being illustrated in 9 one of the initial ignitiing steps. .Fig. 9 is a fragmentary perspectiveview of the lower end of a cigarette illustrating a modification of my invention. v
Fig, 10 is a detail sectional view of the modification'illustrated in Figure '9. i
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary perspective View of another modification of my invention.
In practicing my invention, in the preferred form illustrated in Figures 1 to '1 of the-drawing, I provide a cigarette package 5 fashioned on one of the outer faces thereof with a striking element 6 whereby the igniting elements 1 attached to the ends of the cigarettes 3 are ignited.
The igniting elements I each comprise a disk 9 hingedly secured within the end of a cigarette The inner face of the disk has centrally secured thereon a body of inflammable material I I, for instance sulfur or the like, capable of being ignited by frictional engagement with the striking surface 6. Surrounding said body l and maintained on said disk through the medium of the perforations I0 is a coating of combustible material l2 similar to the smokable content I3 of the cigarette, for instance tobacco.
When the cigarettes are contained within the package 5 the disk is maintained in closed position as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing. Upon extraction of a cigarette from, the package the disk, through the medium of the fingers, is moved to an open position as illustrated in Figure 3. In this position, the striking element 6 formed on the package 5 is brought into engagement with the inflammable material ll contained on the inner face of the disk and the disk moved to a position laterally of the longitudinal axis of the cigarette, and by pressure of a finger applied to the outer face of the disk, the disk and cigarette moved over the surface of the striking element 6 thereby causing the igniting of the inflammable material I l. The burning of the inflammable material ll causes the counbustible material I 2 to become ignited thereby and upon the material I l becoming extinguished, the disk is permitted to hinge downwardly thereby causing the still burning material l2 to engage and ignite the tobacco I3. The perforations In in the disk serve to permit air to be sucked through the cigarette to assist in the igniting of the tobacco. It is to be understood that the disk. 8 is constructed of a noncombustible material and that after the end of the cigarette has become ignited the material l2 may be extinguished by rubbing the same against the surface on the package or the like. The disk becomes severed from the end of the cigarette after the cigarette has been consumed a suflicient distance to release the hinge connection secured within the Wrapper.
In the modified form illustrated in Figure 8, the disk I5 has formed therein a pair of spaced slots l6, one on each side of the highly inflammable material H. A strip I8 is trained through said slots and over the material One end of the strip is secured to the base of the package or container and the other end formed on the outer face thereof with a striking surface or element l9. In operation, as a cigarette is withdrawn from the package the disk I5 is caused to move downwardly by the frictional engagement of the strip l8. Continued movement of the cigarette relative to the strip l8 causes the strip to slide through the slots l6 and over the outer face of the body I1. As this movement continues the striking surface or element l9 will engage the body I! and ignite the same causing a subsequent igniting of the surrounding body of tobacco. The end of the cigarette is then ignited in the same manner illustrated and described in the preferred form.
In the modified form illustrated in Figures 9 and 10, the disk is provided with a central aperture and the highly inflammable body of material 20 extends therethrough for engagement with the striking element 2| carried on the inner face of the strip 22 in the same manner as in the instance of the form illustrated in Figure 8. A suitable guide 23 or strap is secured to the outer face of the disk for guiding the strip over the face of the body of material 20. In this form, the strip may be drawn over the surface of the material 20 by means of the fingers or by attachment to the cigarette package.
In the modified form illustrated in Figure 11, one end of the strip 251s fashioned with a pull tab 26 whereby the same may be grasped and the strip pulled over the surface of the highly inflammable body of material in the same manner as in the instance of the modified form illustrated in Figures 9 and 10. The pull tab 26 is adapted to be folded over the disk 2'! to form a closure for the end of the cigarette 28.
1 Fro-m' the foregoing it will be apparent that by positioning the disk below the end of the cigarette before igniting the material contained thereon, the gases from the highly inflammable material are permitted to be exhausted before the disk is moved into engagement with the end of the cigarette for lighting the same through the medium of the slow burning combustible material I or tobacco secured thereon.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising, in combination, a cigarette or the like, a closure for one end of said cigarette having a body hingedly supported by said cigarette and provided with slow and fast burning combustibles, said fast burning combustible adapted to be ignited inisolated position from the end of said cigarette for effecting ignition of said slow burning combustible whereby said slow burning combustible ignites said cigarette upon engagement of said closure with said cigarette.
2. A device of the character described, comprising, in combination, a cigarette or the like, a disk for closing one end of said cigarette and hinged to the latter, said disk having an inner face provided with slow and fast burning combustibles mounted thereon and operable away fromthe end of said cigarette to enable said fast burning combustible to be ignited in isolated position from the end of said cigarette for effecting ignition of said slow burning combustible whereby said slow burning combustible will ignite said cigarette upon engagement of said disk and said end of the cigarette.
