3 Claims.
My present invention relates to an ornamental box or container whichI have devised for the purpose of holding and displaying in an attractive and ornamental manner such articles as wrist watches, lockets', jewelry, and other small articles of similar character. The objector my invention is to provide a container which by reason of the mechanical construction and arrangement of its parts, will serve when closed as a container for the article, and the parts of which may be readily adjusted when the box is opened to display the contained article in a novel and original manner for sale in show cases or on counters, or in a pleasing and ornamental mannor on a dressing table or bureau in the house. These objects I have attained by the novel construction and arrangements of the parts of the container, as will appear from the description hereinafter given, the essential elements of my 20 invention being more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective of my novel display container with the covers in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same with the cover members open and the display pad in display position;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box with the display pad removed;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the display pad detached from its seat in the sup-porting pad member of the pad structure of the container;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section in a vertical longitudinal plane adjacent one end of the'box showing the display pad in elevated position; and
Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section of the box body with the display pad removed.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The base or body member of the box may conveniently be constructed, as illustrated, of a rectangular frame I of stamped sheet metal to which is secured a bottom sheet 2 of fibre board or other suitable material. The two longer sides of the base member are equipped at the top with spring hinges 3 whereby the pair of cover members 4-4 are secured to the body, these hinges being of the well-known construction which operates to yieldingly hold the cover members alternatively either in closed position, or in open position. The cover members are curved to provide a suitable recess for reception of the article which the box is designed to receive, and preferably are covered and lined, or otherwise ornamented to present a pleasing appearance, both when the covers are open and when they are closed. w
The inner side of the frame member I is formed to provide a seat for the supporting pad member 5 of the 'pad structure, which pad may be formed of any suitable material, and ispreferably provided with a covering of plush or other suitable ornamental material. The center of this pad is cut away and formed with side and end walls defining an opening in the pad member, which walls extend to a level a short distance above the bottom of the container. Two opposite ones of these vertical walls are formed at the bottom with inwardly disposed horizontal flanges 6-45 which terminate short of the proximate end wall of the opening, thus providing recesses between the ends of the flanges and the end walls of the opening.
'Seated within the opening of the supporting pad 5 and supported upon its flanges 6 is arranged a removable display pad I, which in the present instance, though not necessarily, is curved similarly to the cover members. On the top face of this display pad, and extending longitudinally thereof, is formed a central strap-receiving or chain-receiving channel or groove 8 between opposite flanges 99, which latter extend beyond the ends of the groove to form corner lugs Ill-I 0. These lugs are so constructed that when the display pad is removed from its seat in the supporting pad, the display pad may be arranged in an inclined position, with the lugs l0-I0 at one end extending downwardly into the recesses between the ends of the supporting flanges 66 of the supporting pad and the proximate side and walls of the opening therein, to hold the display pad in display position.
When in inclined position the lower face of the lugs Hi will stop against the proximate ends of the flanges 6 at their points ofv contact therewith, and the upper curved face of such lugs will stop against the lower edge of the end wall opening in the supporting pad, the ends of the lugs iii extending downwardly into the recesses at the ends of the flanges 66, and the two stops thus provided, in connection with the friction between the contacting parts and the curved contour of the upper face of the lugs I0, serving to restrain the display pad from shifting from the inclined position to which it has been set.
While as illustrated and described the flanges 66 terminate at both ends short of the ends of the opening in the supporting pad, thus enabling the display pad to be supported at either end, it 55 is obvious that if desired they may at one end extend to the end of the opening. It is also obvious that while the flanges 9-9 are described as continuous members, they may be interrupted, or separate lugs employed so spaced as to perform the functions described, as full equivalents of the specific structure described.
The groove 8 provides a suitable seat to receive the strap of a wrist watch, or the chain of a locket or similar article to be displayed on the pad structure, and when the box is open and the removable pad set to inclined central position between the symmetrical vertical walls formed by the sections of the cover members, a very pleasing and attractive appearance is presented.
I claim:
1. In a container for watches, lockets and like articles, a supporting pad formed with inner vertical depending end and side walls extending toward and terminating above the bottom of the container and defining a rectangular opening, two opposite walls of which are provided with inwardly disposed horizontal flanges spaced above the bottom of the container and which terminate short of the proximate end wall of the opening at at least one end, and a removable display pad supported on said horizontal flanges and formed with corner lugs arranged to be inserted between the ends of the horizontal flanges and the proximate wall of the opening in the supporting pad, the lower faces of said lugs being arranged to stop against the ends of said horizontal flanges and the upper faces of said lugs being arranged to stop against the lower edge of the proximate wall of said opening to hold the display pad in inclined position.
2. In a container for watches, lockets and like articles, a supporting pad formed with inner vertical depending end and side walls extending toward and terminating above the bottom of the container and defining a rectangular opening, two opposite walls of which are provided with inwardly disposed horizontal flanges spaced above the bottom of the container and which terminate short of the proximate end wall of the opening at at least one end, and a removable display pad supported on said horizontal flanges and formed with a strap-receiving groove and corner lugs extending beyond said groove arranged to be inserted between the ends of the horizontal flanges and the proximate wall of the opening in the supporting pad, the lower faces of said lugs being arranged to stop against the ends of said horizontal flanges and the upper faces of said lugs being arranged to stop against the lower edge of the proximate wall of said opening to hold the display pad in inclined position.
In a container for watches, lockets and like articles, a supporting pad formed with inner vertical depending end and side walls extending toward and terminating above the bottom of the container and defining a rectangular opening, two opposite walls of which are provided with inwardly disposed horizontal flanges spaced above the bottom of the container and which terminate short of the proximate end wall of the opening at at least one end, and a removable display pad supported on said horizontal flanges and formed with a strap-receiving groove extending between opposite flanges which provide corner lugs at the ends of the pad arranged to be inserted between the ends of the horizontal flanges and the proximate wall of the opening in the supporting pad, the lower faces of said lugs being arranged to stop against the ends of said horizontal flanges and the upper faces of said lugs being arranged to stop against the lower edge of the proximate wall of said opening to hold the display pad in inclined position.
