3 Claims.

This invention relates to hair curlers.

One of the objects of our invention is to provide a hair curler adapted to include a releasable and bendable wire, whereby, after forming the hair curl about the curler body and the wire, it is possible to remove the curler body and leave the wire engaging the curls of hair, to be further secured by bending the wire back upon the curls, to hold the same until set.

With this and other objects, which will hereinafter appear, our invention resides in certain construction of hair curlers, various forms of which are illustrated in the drawing and are hereinafter described. The functioning of the 5 parts is explained and what we claim is set forth.

25 Figure 3 is a perspective view of a curler similar to that shown in Figure 1, except that the bar-like body is shaped to provide a grooved formation on the side next to the wire.

Figures 4 and 5 show respectively, cross-sec- 30 tions of bar-like bodies which can be used in the curlers shown in Figures 1 and 3.

The form of curler shown in Figure 1, has a handle 46, with a bar-like body 41 fixed thereto. Beneath the body 41 is a covered, bendable wire 48, inserted loosely within the hole 49 of the handle 48. A strand of hair 50, is wound around both the wire 48 and the body 41.

In Figure 2, the curler has two parallel and spaced bar-like bodies 54 and 55, fixed in the 40 handle 56. Between the blades 54 and 55 is shown the end 51, of the strand of hair 58, wound upon the curler. This strand 58, also encircles the bendable, covered wire 59, the wire 59 being slidably held in the hole 60, of the handle Referring to the curler shown in Figure 3, the handle 6| has fixed therein the channeled or grooved, bar-like body 62. Next to the grooved side 63, of the blade 62, is the bendable covered 50 wire 64, which extends loosely through the hole 65, in the handle 6L. This hole 65, is preferably positioned parallel to the body 62.

In using the curler shown in Figure 1, the end 5|, of a strand of hair, is shown caught between 55 the wire end 52 and the body 41 and these parts are held pressed together, while winding the curl 50, after which the wire end 52 is bent back upon the curl 50, as at 52 and the body 41 is next withdrawn from the curl 50, as the wire 48 slips out of the hole 49, leaving the wire end 52 engaged with the curl, after which the part 5 53, of the wire, is also bent back on the curl, as at 53 For short curls, the body 4'! and wire 52 can be shorter.

The curler shown in Figure 9 is used much the same as explained in the use of the curler, 1 shown in Figure 8, except that the hair strand end 57 may be caught between the bodies 5 1 and 55, instead of between a body and the wire. The wire 59 is used the same as above explained in using wire 48.

By having a single blade formed with a grooved underside as at 63, of the body 62, of Figure 3, the wire 64 is better engaged against the body, when holding the strand end. The use of the curler shown in Figure 3, with its wire 54, is the same as explained in connection with the curler shown in Figure 1.

While modifications of each of the several forms of curlers, illustrated and described can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, we wish to include all forms which come within the purview of the following claims.

We claim:

1. A hair curler comprising a handle, a longitudinal bar-like body, fixed to said handle, there being a hole in said handle, and a bendable wire, releasably positioned in said hole, to extend beyond said handle and lie next to said bar-like body.

2. A hair curler comprising a handle, a pair of spaced and substantially parallel bar-like members extending in the same direction from and fixed to said handle, there being a hole in said handle, and a bendable wire releasably positioned in said hole, to extend beyond said handle and lie next to one of said bar-like members, whereby, with the spacing of said members fixing the size of the curls of hair wound about them and. said wire, one of said wire ends can be withdrawn from the hole in said handle, and each end of said wire can be then bent back upon said curls of hair, to retain said curls in shape, while withdrawing said bar-like members from said curls.

3. A hair curler made in accordance with claim 1, wherein the said bar-like body has a curved cross-section, with the channeled or concaved side next to said wire.
