BOBBIN Fiied Dec. 17, 1937 INVENTOR William J. Elvin ATTORNEYS Patented .iuiy W, 1939 Eililiibriihl William .li. Elvin, tlnmberland, l t/id, assignor to C'elanese @orporation at America, a corporation of Delaware Application December li, 1937, Serial No. lldd,2l5
2 tiiairna.
This invention relates to improvements in bobbins, spools and like yarn holders employed in textile industries, and relates more particularly to bobbins, spools and the like adapted for use 5 in spinning and twisting devices.
it is an object of this invention to provide bobbins or spools with braking surfaces.
Another object of this invention is the provision on one end of a bobbin or spool of an extended bushing adapted to provide a surface for braking or stopping the rotation of the bobbin or spool on a rotating spindle.
A further object of this invention is to provide the extended bushing of the bobbin or spool with a braking surface which, with a suitable brake band or tape, furnishes the desired yarn tension when unwinding by unrolling the bobbin or spool as asource of supply in textile operations subsequent to the spinning or twisting.
Other objects of this invention, together with certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will be described more particularly in the following specification and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevationalview, partly in section, of one form of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a view of one end, partly in section, of the bobbin or spool shown in Fig. 1 showing the 30 means for furnishing the tension on the yarn as ltis unwound from the bobbin or spool;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, partly in .section, of another form of this invention, and
Fi 4 is a viewof one end of the bobbin or spool shown in Fig. 3.
Like characters of reference indicate like partstegral with the core or barrel d upon which theyarn is adapted tobe wound.
In accordance with this invention, the bore a at the top end of the barrel 8 is enlarged as shown at ill to receive, as with a forceflt, the shank it "oi a bushing generally indicated by the reference 2 numeral. it. This bushing may be made of any (ill. 2t2-liliii) suitable material such as wood, metal, or plastic molding compositions. The bushing is provided with a portion integral with the shank i2 and which extends beyond the end of the bobbin or spool. The portion of the bushing external to the bore of the bobbin or spool is adapted to act as a braking surface. 'this external portion comprises two spaced fianges id andit forming between them a groove it, the purpose of which will hereinafter be set forth. The flange i5 is adapted to rest on the upper or outer surface of flange 6, and the flange it is provided with an annular groove H, which groove ii is adapted to receive annular rings for identifying the quality, denier, twist and filament count of' the yarn wound on the bobbin or spool.
The bore it of the bushing may extend through the top of the flange it as shown in the Figs. 1 and 2, or the bore of the bushing may be closed at this end as shown in the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 .and 4.
The external portion of the-bushing l3 performs a dual braking function. Thus, when the bobbin or spool is rotating on the spindle of the spinning or twisting device, the rotation of said bobbin or spool may be stopped by anoperative by grasping the external portion with his hand.
In Fig. 2, there is shown means for applying tension on the yarn as it is being unwound by unrolling from the bobbin or spool. The tension applying means comprises a brake band or tape it carried in groove iii. One end of the brake band or tape iii is, fixed to a suitable part of the device (not shown) for holding the bobbin or spool while it is being unwound. The free end of brake band or tape it is adapted to support an interchangeable weight it, the size of the weight depending upon the amount of tension desired to be put on the yarn being unwound.
It is to be understood that the foregoing detailed description is given merely by Way of illustration and that many variations may be made therein without departing from the/spirit of my invention.
. Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
-1. In a bobbin or spool for use in spinning and twisting machines, a bushing comprising a shank adapted to be received in the bore of the bobbin or spool, and having a portion integral with said shank and extending beyond the end of said bobbin or spool, said extended portion having spaced flanges thereon forming a plurality of braking surfaces, one of said braking surfaces being adapted to receive a brake band.
- 2. In a bobbin or spool forum in spinning and flanges forming a groove therebetween, said twisting machines, a. bushing comprising a shank groove being adapted to receive a brake band and adapted to be received in the bore of the bobbin to function as a braking surface for said brake or spool, and having a portion integral with said band when the yarn is being unwound therefrom. 5 shank and extending beyond the end of said bobbin or spool. said extended portion having spaced WILLIAM J. ELVIN.
