Description

June 20, 1939.; F. v. BELsTRUP WHIRLIGIG Filed May 18,- 1935 Y l w..\\\\\\\\\\\\\ jg-@hflf F719. der/h Wilhelm B81577441 'b/ K g l/l l 3 Patented June 2i), 1939 UNITED STATES' wnmlucrc Frederik Vilhelm B'elstrup, Copenhagen,
Denmark Application May 18, 1935, Serial No. 22,254 In DenmarkMay 23, 1934 .1
a claims. (cris-ss) It is feasible, in known manner, to transmit kinetic energy'to rotating whirligigs-so-called blow-tops-and it is similarly known to construct so-called leaping tops which,` after having re- 5 ceived a suilicient kinetic energy in the shape of rotation, are able to perform agreater or smaller number oi leaps with decreasing heights, until the leaping energy or rotation energy has been consumed.
a leaping blow-top by combining a leaping device and blowing device in one and the same top, or
to use this combination for rotary balls .or soaring bodies. lo By such a combination the rotation can be Y maintained for an unlimited period, while at the same time the body concerned may be caused to-periorm leaps, from the implement belonging to the game, down on to some base or other,
and up again on to the implement, when the body concerned is a whirligis. or to let the. body perform soaring trips, when the body concerned is a ball or a soaring body.
Acouple of constructions of the invention are illustrated on the drawing,
Fig. `1 showing the invention applied to a top, partly in section, partly inside elevation, 'I
Fig. 2 the same applied to a soaring body, also partlyin section,
Fig. 3 la. spindle with button and pin from Figs. 1 and 2.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the transmission ot energy is eiected by a blowon thevbutton I, and friction must be present between the button and the l body supplying the blow. 'I'he energy is transmitted by way of the spindle 2 to the pin l,
'at which point the energy is transmitted to the threads 4, which by means of the pipe R areiirmly connected to the masses M or L, the rotation of o which isto be increased. In Vorder that l, 2, l
may return to the initial position, 2 rests with its point in a recess inthe body 5, which'is supported by a compressed spring Q Fig. l shows a leaping device 1 consisting of a spring, a rubber body orsome other resilient device, whereas 2 is fitted with two exactly similar blowi- On the other hand, it is not known to construct devices adapted each to act either as a blow?y device or as a leaping device.
The whirligig, as shown in Fig. l, can perform leapsin thatl its point strikes a floor or some other surface, whereas the soaring body, -as shown in Fig. 2, after having attaineda suitable velocity,
can be used as a kind df ball, which subsequently may 'receive its impulses partly by blows from below, partly by blows from above, after the velocity has been reduced.
.It is necessary to provide a sufiicient friction between the blowing implement and the friction button l, and to give the blow a suliicientJ duration, which 'is attained by providing a sufficient elasticity in the blowing implement, the rotating body or the support.
As mentioned above, there are various many ners in which the blow-device as well as the leap-device may be constructed, and the manners indicated here are merely chosen at fandom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
`1. A-whirligig comprising a body, cam means carried by said body at opposite sides thereof whereby a rotational impulse may be transmitted to said body, means coacting with said cam means mounted slidably in said body and yielding means mounted in said body normally urging said coac'ting means outwardly from said -body so that a blow upon said coacting means will rotate said body. i
2. A whirligig comprising a body, nut devices located on opposite sides of said body. elastic screwing Ameans extending o n disposi@ sides of said body and engaging said nut devices whereby blows upon said screwing means will cause the whirligig to spin, leap and 3. A whirliig comprising a body, a nut device cooperating with said`body, elastic means extending at one side of said body andengagmg said l nut device, elastic means extending at `the opposite side of said body wherebyblows upon said elastic means engaging said nut device will cause the whirligig to spin, leap and ily. s
