My invention relates to a burial receptacle of the type employed for housing and protecting a casket or coiiin, immediately inclosing a corpse, from the period of interment.

Importantobjects and advantages of the present invention are to provide a durable burial receptacle of the character described, which will indenitely withstand the attendant destructive eiiects of underground burial, which is comparatively light in weight, attractive in appearance, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and, other objects inv view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the-novel construction, combination and arrangement of partsl herein specilically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it is to be understood that changes in the form proportions and details of construction may be resorted to that come withinthe scope of the claim hereunto appended.

Referrlngin detail to the drawing I denotes the entire receptacle, which comprises an oblong, rectangularly-shaped, hollow case 2 having an open top, and including a cover 3 for the latter. The receptacle is constructed of wood, which has been impregnated with creosote, or treated with other agents of equivalent preservative properties. The cover is preferably transversely curved or arch-shaped to render same more capable of readily sustaining the load of the earth thereon non interment. v t

The case 2 and-its cover 3 have an intertting tongue and groove engagement, respectively indicated atf. 4 and 5, which are .preferably substantially v-shaped, and extend continuously throughout and along the contacting edges of said case and cover.

The entire interior tacle I is provided with a lining 8. which is securely and permanently cemented in position throughout its area. The lining is constructed of substantial moisture proofmaterial, not unlike .ordinary rubberized composition rooiing material, or of any other suitable sheet material.

The receptacle I is suitably sealed by a plastic asphaltic cement 9, which is interposed between 5 the intertting tongue and groove engagement of the case 2 and cover 3.

The modified form of the invention, illustrated ln Figure 3, comprises a receptacle Ill, constructed of two-plies of wood, respectively indicated at II 10 and I2, which are rigidly secured together, with an interposed ply of suitable porous, sheet material I3, in the form sheet felt and the like, disposed therebetween. The porous ply I3 is employed to create an air space between the wood plies I I and 15 I2, and thereby aid in the preservation of the structure. The wood plies are treated withl a .preservative agent, and the inner and outer surfaces of the entire receptacle are covered by coatings of asphaltic cement'and paint, as set forth 20 relatively to the disclosure in Figure 2. The modication of the invention, shown in Figure 4, differs from the embodiment disclosed in Figure 2 and herein before described, in that the receptacle I4 is not only provided with a 25 similar lining I5 on its inner surface, but also has its entire outer surface covered by a facing I6 of the same material. The hrung I5 and facing I6 are securely and permanently cemented in position throughout their areas, and have their entire surface areas covered by coatings of cementitious material and paint, in the manner stated relatively to the disclosure in Figure v2.l

'I'he present invention provides an attractive,v light, durable and inexpensive burial receptacle, 35 which is impervious to moisture and constructed to readily and indeilnitely withstand deterioration against the natural process of decomposition of the corpse contained therein, and against all conditions concomitant with underground interment, 40 and which, owing to its durability, will entirely eliminate sunken graves due to the collapse of the burial structures.

What I ,claim is: A burial receptacle of the character described comprising the combination of a case including and end members permanently secured together, and further including an intertting cover member, each of said members being constructed of two plies of rigid sheet material having a sheet of porous material disposed therebetween to provideair space throughoutthe areaof said two plies of rigid sheet material, and a coating of preservative material applied to the entire outer surface of said, case.
