DAMPENING ROLL FOR LITHOGRAPHING PRESSES Filed 001;. 7, 1937 M A EMMA Patented Mar. 7, 1939 DAMPENING ROLL FOR PRE mos ssEs Clarence Walker Jones, Philadelphia, Pa. Application October 7, 1937, Serial No. 167,761
This invention relates to dampening rolls for lithographing presses.
Heretofore it has been customary to provide dampening rolls for lithographic presses with a covering of woven cloth cut and stitched together to form a sleeve-like cover for the roll. Such covers are unsatisfactory, particularly by reason of the presence of a seam which mars the desired smoothness of the covered roll. It has also been proposed to use a plain knitted seamless cover for such dampening rolls, but such covers are not as satisfactory in other respects as woven covers.
Now in accordance with this invention. there is provided a cover for the dampening roll of a lithographic press comprising a seamless tubular knitted fabric formed with elongated loops simulating the pile of a woven pile fabric, as, for example, a knitted fabric known as Terry cloth.-
The "Terry" cloth cover for the roll may easily be formed by the use of a circular knitting machine of the proper type, the sleeve-like cover being knitted to the appropriatesize and length to flt snugly any desired dampening roll.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention- Figure'l is a perspective view of a dampening roll embodying my invention, and
Figure 2 is an end view of the sleeve-like cover used in my invention.
Referring to the'drawing, a conventional lithographing roll is shown with. a central metallic shaft I extending longitudinally therethrough and a cylindrical body 3 of any suitable material,
' such as, for example, rubber, composition, fabric,
etc., with a smooth outer surface. The knitted (G1. Ell-67.8)
Terry cloth sleeve?) is placed upon and snugly fits the body 3 with the pile-like loops on the outside.
The sleeve 5, as shown in Figure 2, is seamless and comprises a knittted body 1 formed of the usual closely-knit loops from which extend, so as to cover the entire surface, a large number of integral elongated loops 9, which give a pile effect'to the surface.
The sleeve 5 may he slipped over the roll either directly or by being turned inside out and forced over the roll. The roll body 3 is somewhat resilient so that the cover is drawn taut around the surface of the roll.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A dampening roll for lithographic presses comprising, in combination, a roller and a cover therefor consisting of seamless knitted fabric provided on its outer face with elongated loops simulating pile.
2. A dampening roll for lithographic presses comprising, in combination, a metallic shaft, a resilient body portion mounted thereon and a seamless knitted fabric cover provided on its outer face with elongated loops simulating pile.
3. A dampeningroll for lithographic presses comprising, in combination, a shaft, a body portion mounted on the shaft and a. seamless tubular covering of Terry cloth tightly embracing the body portion, the cover being applied to the body portion with the relatively smooth surface of the cloth in contact with the body portion and the looped surface of the cloth outward and forming the operative surface of the roll.
