This invention relates to an ornamental wheel disk, and more particularly to a wheel disk adapted to be snapped into engagement with retaining springs on a wheel of an automobile.
The subject matter oi-the present application has been divided from my copending application Serial No. 13,814, flled March 30, 1935, entitled "Method of and apparatus for die-forming parts.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved wheel disk for disposition over an outer side of a wheel such as an automobile wheel.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wheel disk having an inwardly deflected annular flange for use in the retention of the disk on the wheel.
Another object of this invention relates to the provision of an annular inwardly deflected part on a disk for retaining a skirt or sleeve on the interior oi? the disk.
In accordance with the general features of this invention, there is provided an annular disk having a central crown portion for disposition over the hub of the wheel and an outer peripheral portion for cooperation with an outer part of the wheel, the crown portion oi the disk terminating in an annular inwardly deflected portion to provide the disk with a gooseneck.
Still another feature of the invention relates to the employment or this deflected portion for securing and holdingin place-on the interior of the disk an annular flange or skirt.
Other objects and features of this invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken inconnection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a single embodiment thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front view 01' a disk embodying the features of this invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on the line IIII of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and showing the skirt retained in position on the interior of the disk; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view somewhat similar to Figure 2, but dilfering from Figure 2 in that it shows the condition of the crown portion of the disk prior to its being deflected inwardly, and also shows the position of the skirt in dotted lines.

The final form of the disk is shown in Figures 1 and 2, with an annular skirt or sleeve ll secured in position on the interior of the disk. This disk may be manufacturedon any suitable apparatus, but is preferablyi'ormed in accordance with the teaching in my aforesaid copending application.
The disk includes a central or crown portion I! for disposition over a hub of a wheel, and a peripheral flange l3 for cooperation with an 10 outer part of a wheel, such, ior example, as the tire rim. The crown portion i2 is connected to the outer portion i3 by an intermediate convex portion It.
The disk of my invention, like a hub cap, is adapted to be snapped into retained engagement on the outer side of a wheel so as to conceal the wheel fastening bolts. Any suitable means may be employed to hold the disk in place, such, for example, as circumierentially spaced retaining springs secured to the hub part of the wheel.
Now, in order to strengthen the disk at its place of securement to the wheel, as well as in order to provide a means by which it may be engaged and retained on the wheel, I have deflected the outer margin of the crown portion l2 from the position shown in Figure 3 to an inturned position such as shown in Figure 2. The condition of this portion of the disk prior to its being deflected is shown in Figure 3. It will be noted that this portion I! has a slight concave curvature, so that upon its being subjected to endwise pressure, as disclosed in my copending application, it will be deflected inwardly to provide an annular inwardly extending rib or flange 16 (Figure 2). This inturned flange It provides the disk with a gooseneck appearance between the crown and concave portions I2 and H, in addition to providing the disk with an interior rib or flange by means of which the disk may be secured in place on the wheel.
In reality, the deflecting oi the portion it results in the crown portion l2 terminating in a reentrant groove I! located between the portions 12 and I4. This groove, if it is so desired, may be engaged'by any suitable pry-o1! tool for 101'- cibly prying the disk loose from the retaining means on the wheel.
In order further to rigidity and strengthen the disk at its place of secmement to the wheel, I contemplate that the interior of the crown por tion 12 of the dish maybe provided with an annular flange or sleeve ii which is illustrated in dotted lines in Figure In other words, in Fin ure 3 I have illustrated the position of this sleeve or flange ll prior to its being secured to the disk by the clinching of the portion il thereto. when the portion I5 is clinched thereto, the inwardly extending annular flange l6 tightly embraces the inclined outer surface of the sleeve II, as shown in Figure 2.
The flange ll may be provided with a turned inner edge I! over which the retaining means or springs of the wheel are adapted to ride.
Now, I desire it understood that while I have illustrated and described in detail a preferred form of my invention, the invention is not to be thus limited, but only in so far as deflned by the scope and spirit oi the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. An ornamental wheel disk provided with a central crown portion, an outer curved marginal portion and an intermediate conical portion, said conical portion forming an annular reentrant groove for enhancing the appearance of the disk and for providing the disk with a rearwardly projecting concealed annular flange, said flange being clinched to an interiorly disposed circular skirtprojecting rearwardly from the crown portion or the disk, said skirt being arranged to engage disk retaining means on a wheel.
2. An ornamental wheel disk provided with a central crown portion and an outer curved marginal portion for cooperation with the outer side of a wheel, said crown portion having disposed on the interior thereof a skirt clinched to the crown portion by the forming of a groove in the crown portion.
3. An ornamental wheel disk formed for cooperation with the outer side oi. a wheel and for disposition over the outer side oi the wheel, having a central bulged crown portion and an interiorly disposed skirt secured to said disk solely by the clinching of an intermediate portion of said disk thereon.
4. An ornamental wheel disk formed for cooperation with the outer side of a wheel and for disposition over the outer side of the wheel, having a central bulged crown portion and an interiorly disposed skirt secured to saiddisk solely by the clinching of an intermediate portion of said disk thereon, the clinched connection between the disk and said skirt providing the disk with an intermediate annular reentrant groove.
5. An ornamental wheel disk provided with a central crown portion and an outer curved marginal portion and an intermediate relatively deep annular reentrant groove for enhancing the appearance of the disk and for providing the disk with a rearwardly projecting concealed annular flange adapted to be engaged by disk retaining means on a wheel, said flange comprising a gooseneck portion radially inward oi the outer margin of said crown portion, and a circular skirt secured to said disk by said gooseneck portion.
6. An ornamental wheel disk provided with a central crown portion, an outer curved marginal portion and an intermediate relatively deep annular reentrant groove for enhancing the appearance of the disk and for providing the disk with a rearwardly projecting concealed annular flange, said flange extending axially and radially inward between the outer edge of the crown por tion and inner edge of said outer portion, said marginal portion extending a substantial dis tance beyond said groove for covering the outer side of the wheel adjacent the wheel rim, said flange having nested in and secured. thereto a rearwardly projecting circular skirt adapted to be engaged by disk retaining means on a wheel.
