Description

Jan. 24, 1939*. B, JAMES 2,144,979
'Box 4 Filed Feb. 2,3, 1938 2 Sheets-Shen??l l -fr gzfnv lllf( Attorneys l Patented Jan. 24, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes of the general type disclosed in my copending application vSerial Number 183,719, iiled under date of January 6, 1938, and over which the in- 5 stant invention is designed asan improvement.
Amo-ng the important objects of the present invention are to provide a gift box which, as compared with box of my copending application, is equipped with a closure and sealing means of a 16 more simplified character and forming a double and stronger seal.
Another object is to provide a closure and double seal forming an integral part of the box and a better fitting closure which may be more l5 readily manipulated into and from closing position.
Other objects, subordinate in nature, are also comprehended by my invention all of which together with the precise nature of my improve- 2O ments will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reierence to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specication.
In said drawings:-
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a box embodying my improvements,
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan with the closure aps swung into opened position,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows,
Figure 4 is a view in transverse vertical section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows',
Figure 5 is a View in horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4 looking downwardly,
Figure 6 is a view in transverse vertical section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2,
Figure 'I is a fragmentary view in transverse 40 section similar to Figure 3 but drawn to an enlarged scale and showing one of the closure flaps closed, and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 4 but showing the closing and sealing position of the parts on an enlarged scale.
Describing my invention in detail, with reference to the drawings by numerals, the box thereof comprises a preferably rectangular open top body structure I of cardboard, or other suitable material, having four side walls 2, a flanged cover 3, or lid, and a bottom 4. The bottom 4 is cut, stamped or otherwise treated, to form an internal, lateral flange extending around the inside of the box and designated 5, and a pair of rectangular closure ilaps 6 hinged, as at 1, to the flange 5 at opposite side edges of the latter to open outwardly of the bottom 4 and toward opposite sides of said box. Preferably the hinges 1 are formed by scoring the bottom 4 of the box.
As will be understood the flaps 6 close flat in 5 edge to edge relation at their free sides and the ends of said flaps t between opposite sides of the flange 4. The free. side edges of the flaps 6 are oppositely beveled, relatively, as shown at 8 and 9, so that in the closed position of the flaps 10 6 they overlap at said free edges and seal said edges in said closed position. Likewise the end edges of the flaps 6 and the adjacent edges of the flange 4 are oppositely beveled as indicated at IIJ and I I, respectively, so that in the closed posi- 15 tion of said ilaps said end edges thereof overlap the related edges of the flange 4 and seat thereagainst to limit closing movement of said flaps when the latter are in a common plane. By virtue of the described edges of the flaps 6 and the 20 ange 4 said edges coaot to form a seal at the ends of the flaps as well as along the free side edges thereof in the closed position of said flaps.
A wrapper I2 of thin paper of suitable quality encloses the cover 3 and side Walls 2 of the strnc- 25 ture I and is provided with bottom edges I3 cemented or pasted over the flange 4, said edges I3 terminating adjacent to the hinges l and beveled edges II of said ange 4. The Wrapper I2 overlaps, as at I4, along one side wall 2 and is pasted 30 or cemented together throughout said overlap.
A pair of rectangular sealing strips or panels I5 of paper, similar to the wrapper I2, are pasted, or similarly secured, to the outer faces of the aps 6, respectively, said strips I5 having outer side 35 edges I6 extending loosely across the hinges 'I to seal the scores thereof while permitting fre-e hinging movement of the flaps 6, and said edges I6 overlapping the adjacent edges of the wrapper i2 to which they are pasted or similarly secured. The sealing strips I5 extend beyond the ends of the flaps 6 and beyond the free sides thereof and are coated with adhesive, as at I5', so that in the closed position of said flaps, said strips overlap the flange 4 at the ends of the flaps 6 and one strip I5 overlaps the other over the free side edges of said flaps 6, as shown at I1 in Figure 8, whereby the strips may be pasted to the ange 4 and to eachother to form an airtight seal around the 50 free edges of the flaps 6. Also one of the strips I5 is secured to its flap 6 partway across the same only to provide a free marginal side portion I8 on its flap 6 over which the strip I5 of the other flap 6 may be folded, as shown at I9, Figure 4, 55
and pasted thereto if desired, whereby the overlap of the strips I5 along the free side edges of the flaps is doubly secured in place against tearing.
As will be clear the described ange 4 and the hinged sides of the aps 6 denne a rectangular opening 2i) in the bottom 4 of the box through which the latter is designed to be lled. As in the case of the box of my aforementioned copending application a rectangular packing panel 2l, of ilexible material such as cardboard, is inserted into the box to partially close said opening 2G, said panel being of a width to fit into said opening and of a proper length to overlap the ange 4 at its ends, and said panel 2l being inserted in the box by flexing lengthwise as shown in Figure 3 to spring under the flange 4 between the latter and the contents of the box. Cross ties 22 of ribbon and a cluster bowknot 23 may be applied to the wrapper for ornamental purposes if desired,
The described box may be opened either at the top by tearing the ties 22 and wrapper I 2 and then removing the cover 3, or at the bottom, by tearing the sealing strips I5 and swinging the aps 6 on their hinges 'l to opening position as shown in Figure 2.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suice to impart a clear understanding of my invention Without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modication without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modications as fall Within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:-
A box comprising a rectangular body structure of semi-flexible material having a bottom inturned lateral flange surrounding the lower edge of the structure and a pair of rectangular closure flaps having outer sides hinged to said ange at opposite sides of the structure, free inner sides mating in edge-to-edge relation in the closed position of the flaps, and ends similarly mating with said ange in said position of said ilaps, and a pair of sealing panels of exible material secured to the outer faces of said flaps, respectively, and extending beyond said sides and ends of the same, respectively, to overlap the ilange along the outer sides and ends of the flaps and to one overlap the 1 other along the inner sides of said aps, said strips being permanently secured to said iiange along the outer sides of the aps and coated with adhesive for pasting to said flange in the closed position of the flaps along the ends of the latter and for pasting of the one to the other alongl the inner sides of said naps, the inner side edges of the flaps being beveled to overlap in said closed position of the flaps, and the ends of said ilaps and adjacent edges of the flange being beveled for similar relation in said position of the flaps, the panel overlapping the other being detached from the related ap along the inner side of said panel to provide a free marginal portion along said side of the panel and the other strip overlapping said free marginal portion for pasting thereto.
