3 Claims.
The invention relates to a container for dispensing tooth powder and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type having a neck portion terminating in an extension in which is formed a series of dispensing openings with a closure cap having a single dispensing opening arranged axially of the extension, and wherein the cap and extension are so dimensioned that when said cap is in closed position, the side wall of the extension and cap are out of contact and the end of the cap enters and closes the opening in the cap.

The invention is directed to a container for dispensing tooth powder and the like. In the pre-- ferred form of the invention, the container comprises a body portion having ends joined thereto, one of said ends having an upstanding reduced neck portion terminating in a tapered extension, said extension having dispensing openings in the side wall thereof. The extension is provided with an integrally closed end and a cylindrical portion disposed between said closed end and said tapered side wall. This forms at the upper end of the extension a closure plug. A cap is provided for said extension having a cylindrical portion which is adapted to slidably engage the neck and a tapered portion with an opening at the upper end. The wall surrounding said opening is cylindrical and is dimensioned so as to receive the upper end of the extension which serves as a closure plug for said opening. The tapered wall of the cap is disposed at a greater angle than the tapered wall of the extension so that when the cap is in' closed position, the wall of the cap is out of contact with the wall of the extension, thus permitting free movement of the closure cap to closed position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, a container embodying the invention is illustrated at 6 having ends I and 8 joined thereto. The end 8 has a reduced neck portion 9 fixedly attached thereto by crimping of the metal at the lower edge portion ll! thereof to the metal surrounding an opening in said end of the container. The neck portion 9 has a cylindrical base Illw, said base having a portion thereof reduced in diameter as indicated at H. The neck portion 9 terminates in a tapered extension l2 having dispensing openings l3 in the side wall thereof. The extension is provided with an integrally closed end l4 and a cylindrical portion I5 disposed between said closed end and said tapered wall. The cylindrical portion I5 is shaped so as to form a closure plug, the function of which will be later described.
A cap I 6 is provided for the extension, said cap having a cylindrical portion I! which is adapted to slidably engage the cylindrical portion- Illa of the neck and has the lower edge portion [8 thereof turned into the depressed portion ll of the neck to slidably engage the same. The shoulders at the upper and lower ends of the depressed portion ll serve as stop members and limit the extent of sliding movement of the cap on the neck. The inturned part !8 on the cap contacts with the upper stop shoulder when the cap is raised as shown in Fig. 5, and it contacts with the lower stop shoulder when the cap is lowered, as shown in Fig. 4. The cap is provided with an outwardly extending bead l9 which may be grasped by the fingers for imparting sliding movement to the cap and terminates in a tapered portion 29 at the upper end thereof, said tapered portion having an opening 2l therethrough. The wall 22 surrounding said opening is cylindrical in shape and is dimensioned so as to receive and frictionally engage the upper end l5 of the extension which serves as a closure plug for said opening.
From the above the operation for closing and opening the dispensing openings l3 in the extension should be apparent. In Fig. 4 of the drawing, the dispensing openings are closed by the cap l6 inasmuch as the cylindrical portion 22 is in frictional contact with the closed end [5 at the upper end of the extension. By grasping the projecting bead I9 with the fingers and pulling upwardly on the cap, said cap will slide to a position illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing whereby the contents of the container may be poured out through the openings l3 in the extension and thence out through the central opening 2| in the cap for dispensing the contents of the container.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing, a slight variation in the formation of the neck portion and closure cap therefor is set forth. The neck portion 23 is cylindrical in shape and is provided with outwardly extending detents 24 in the side wall thereof. The neck is provided at its outer end with a horizontal wall 25 formed integrally therewith and having dispensing openings 26 therein. The neck portion has located centrally thereof and formed integrally with said wall a reduced closed cylindrical portion forming a closure plug 21. A cap 28 is provided having a cylindrical skirt portion 29 which is provided with a recess 30. The cap is adapted to slidably engage said neck portion and has its slidable movement limited by the detents contacting with the wall of the recess formed in the skirt of the cap. After the cap is assembled to the neck, the lower edge portion 3| thereof is turned inwardly so as to have engagement with the detentswhen the cap is in its raised position for retaining the same to the neck. The lower inturned edge 3| of the cap, in Fig. 6, contacts with a shoulder at the upper side of the seam joining the neck to the container which serves as a stop member for limiting the movement of the cap to closed position. The cap is also provided at its upper end with a tapered portion 32 and has an opening in the upper end thereof, the walls 33 surrounding said opening being cylindrical and so dimensioned as to frictionally receive the closure plug 27 for controlling the dispensing openings by the slidable movement of said cap.
From the above it will be apparent that a container for dispensing tooth powder and the like has been devised which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, and wherein a dispensing extension is provided therefor which is adapted to be closed or unclosed by a slidable cap. It will be noted that the angle of the tapered cap is slightly greater than the angle of the taper of the extension, so that any powder remaining between the parts does not prevent the complete closing of the container; also that the relatively large openings in the extension will allow this excess powder to Work back into the container.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A container for tooth powder and the like comprising a body portion and ends seamed thereto, one of said ends having an upstanding neck provided with dispensing openings, said neck having a portion thereof extending beyond said dispensing openings, said portion being provided with a closed end and a cylindrical portion disposed between the closed end and the dispensing openings, and a cap having a cylindrical portion slidably engaging said neck and a tapered portion with an opening at the upper end thereof, the wall surrounding said opening being cylindrical and so dimensioned as to frictionally receive the upper end of said cylindrical portion which serves as a closure plug for said opening, whereby the dispensing openings may be controlled by the slidable movement of said cap, said neck having spaced stop members and said cap having the lower end thereof turned inwardly so as to lie between said spaced stop members and limit the movements of the cap on the neck through contact with said stop members.
2. A container for tooth powder and the like comprising a body portion and ends seamed thereto, one of said ends having an upstanding neck terminating in a tapered extension having openings in the side Wall thereof, said extension being provided with a closed end and a cylindrical portion disposed between said closed end and said tapered side wall, a cap having a cylindrical portion slidably engaging said neck and a tapered portion with an opening at the upper end, the wall surrounding said opening being cylindrical and dimensioned so as to receive the upper end of the extension which serves as a closure plug for said opening, the tapered wall of said cap being disposed at a greater angle than the tapered wall of said extension so that when said cap is in closed position, the wall of the cap is out of contact with the wall of the extension, thus permitting free movement of the closure cap to closed position.
3. A container for tooth powder and the like, comprising a body portion and ends seamed thereto, one of said ends having an upstanding neck, said neck being provided at its outer end with a horizontal wall formed integrally therewith and having dispensing openings therein, said neck having centrally thereof and integrally formed with said wall a reduced closed cylindricalportion forming a closure plug, and a cap having a cylindrical portion slidably engaging said neck and a tapered portion with an opening at the upper end thereof, the wall surrounding said opening being cylindrical and so dimensioned as to frictionally receive the closure plug, whereby the dispensing openings may be controlled by the slidable movement of said cap.
