Description

CIGARETTE TUBE AND APPARATUS FOR vMAKING SUCH TUBES Filed Sept. 5, 1933 Patented Mar. 24, 1936 UNITED STATES CIGARETTE TUBE AND APPARATUS FOR MAKING SUCH TUBES Boris Aivaz, Budapest, Hungary Application September 5, 1933, Serial No. 688,246 In Hungary September 17, 1932 3 Claims.
The invention relates to cigarette tubes which prior to filling are furnished with a filter wad or plug consisting of a multiple strip of a plurality of thicknesses of corrugated or crepe paper wound into a loose spiral.
In filling cigarette tubes equipped with smoke filter plugs, the defect has been observed that the smoke filter plug is liable to be ejected by the plunger of the cigarette filling machine.
In order to avoid this the present invention proposes a cigarette tube which has a smoke filter plug which is cemented into the tube prior to filling the latter.
The invention also relates to an arrangement for making such tubes and comprising a device for applying adhesive which comes into operation intermittently and is disposed between a device for winding or producing the filter plug and an arrangement for filling the cigarette, said adhesive applying device applying to the compressed smoke filter plug prior to its introduction into the cigarette tube a drop of adhesive which comes into contact with the tube solely on the expansion of the compressed smoke filter plug on introduction so that a premature wiping off or spreading of the adhesive is avoided.
During the application of the adhesive the plug is supported by a sleeve which is associated with the mandrel carrying the tube and is longitudinally slotted the diameter of the cavity of the sleeve being smaller than the plug.
The ejection of the plug from the sleeve and its introduction into the tube is efiected preferably by a blade which is rocked intermittently into the path of the sleeve and which on the return motion of the sleeve retains the plug and thrusts it into the tube. The plug released from the sleeve passes during its expansion into the tube and is secured thereto by the adhesive.
The drawing represents by way of example an embodiment of the invention with reference to the manufacture of cigarette tubes with smoke filter plugs.
Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the device for applying adhesive.
Fig. 2 an endview of the adhesive container.
Fig. 3 a front view corresponding to Fig. 1 with the supporting mandrel for the sleeve displaced outwardly.
Fig. 4 is a front view corresponding to Fig. 3 in that position of the components which they assume at the moment of application of adhesive.
Figs. 5 and '7 show the supporting mandrel carrying the tube and the filter plug surrounded by the sleeve as well as the ejecting blade in two difierent positions.
Fig. 6 shows a plan view of the mandrel with the blade omitted.
Figs. 8-9 show details of the adhesive apply- 5 ing device and Fig. 10 is a side view of the sleeve coacting with the mandrel.
Fig. 11 shows the finished product, namely the cigarette tube with smoke filter plug cemented in. 10
By means of the plunger l2 the smoke filter plug l l is slid from the winding device ll], Figs. 1 and 3, which device is known per se, into the cavity of a sleeve 23 which is integral with the supporting mandrel I3. In its previous advance 15 this mandrel l3 had carried along with it the cigarette tube I4 in the direction of the arrow Fig.1. In the vicinity of the winding device In is the adhesive container I, Figs. 1 and 2, the front wall 5 of which has an opening through which projects the adhesive supplying disc 2 which is rotatable about the horizontal axis 4. On its periphery the disc 2 is provided with a continuous groove 3, Figs. 8 and 9. By means of the ratchet wheel 1 an intermittent motion can be imparted to the shaft 4. In each position of rest of the disc 2 a drop of adhesive I1 is applied to the side of the plug II.
The sleeve 23 has a longitudinal slot I6, Fig. 10, which extends through to the cavity [5 of the sleeve and is continued along the mandrel I3, Fig. 6.
The diameter of the cavity of the sleeve [5 is somewhat smaller than theouter diameter of the plug II and the inner diameter of the tube 5 I4 so that the plug II is held in the compressed state in the sleeve 23 and expands as soon as it leaves the sleeve.
On the opposite side of the adhesive applying device to the winding arrangement I0 is disposed a blade I8 which pivots about-a pin [9 and swings from its highest position, Fig. 4, into the working position, Fig. 5, as soon as the sleeve 23 together with the plug II which is resiliently compressed within its cavity has again advanced after the application of the drop of adhesive I1 and has arrived in the position shown in Fig. 3. Then the sleeve 23 together with mandrel l3 again passes to the right the blade [8 entering in the slot l6 and ejecting the plug II from the 5 sleeve 23 and stripping the tube M from the mandrel l3. In this operation the drop of adhesive I1 is not smeared because it cannot pass into contact with the tube Hi. It is only when the plug ll emerges from the cavity l5 of the sleeve 23 that it expands in consequence of its elasticity and is urged against the inner wall of the tube l4 and is secured in position therein by the adhesive (Fig. 11).
What I claim is:-
1. Apparatus for producing cigarette tubes having smoke filter plugs cemented thereon, comprising a movable mandrel for supporting the tube, a longitudinally-slotted hollow supporting device for the plug, movable simultaneously with the said supporting mandrel, and an adhesiveapplying device comprising an intermittently movable disc applying a drop of adhesive to each plug through the slot while the plug is in position in the longitudinally slotted supporting device, the hollow of which supporting device is of smaller diameter than the outer diameter of the p 2. Apparatus for producing cigarette tubes having smoke filter plugs cemented thereon, comprising a movable mandrel for supporting the tube, a hollow supporting device for the plug in the form of a sleeve integral with said mandrel, the said supporting device and the adjacent portion of the mandrel being longitudinally slotted, and an adhesive-applying device comprising an intermittently movable disc applying a drop of adhesive to each plug through the slot while the plug is in position in the longitudinally slotted supporting device, the hollow of said supporting device being of smaller diameter than the outer diameter of the plug.
3. Apparatus for producing cigarette tubes having smoke filter plugs cemented thereon, comprising a movable mandrel for supporting the tube, a hollow supporting device for the plug in the form of a sleeve integral with said man- --drel, the said supporting device and the adja-
