Abstract
A fascia assembly with is provided a base plate for a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin. A frame with a view opening is attachable to the base plate. An insert is sized to be received and retained between the base plate and the frame and viewable through the view opening. A method is provided for decorating the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin, by installing the base plate on a face. An insert is inserted between the base plate and the frame, which is attached to the base plate to retain the insert between the base plate and the frame and to display the insert through a view opening in the frame. A method is provided by opening the frame. A first insert is removed from the face. A second insert is inserted to the face. The frame is closed to the face.
Description
- This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application Ser. No. 63/498,075 filed Apr. 25, 2023, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated in its entirety by reference herein.
- Various embodiments relate to fascia assemblies for cabinets, drawers, or bins.
- The prior art has provided removable fascia for bins.
- According to an embodiment, a fascia assembly is provided for a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin. The fascia assembly is provided with a base plate. A frame is attachable to the base plate, the frame has a view opening. An insert is sized to be received and retained between the base plate and the frame and viewable through the view opening.
- According to a further embodiment, the base plate is further provided with at least one fastener to fasten the base plate to a face plate of the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin.
- According to another further embodiment, the insert is further provided with a panel.
- According to another further embodiment, hardware is installed on the insert.
- According to an even further embodiment, at least one fastener is installed through the insert to fasten the hardware to the insert.
- According to another even further embodiment, an aperture is formed through the base plate to provide clearance for a fastener head of the at least one fastener.
- According to another even further embodiment, the aperture is slotted to accommodate fastener patterns of various hardware assemblies.
- According to another further embodiment, the frame is pivotally attached to the base plate.
- According to another further embodiment, the frame is further provided with a fastener to fasten the frame to the base plate.
- According to another further embodiment, the insert is sized to be retained between the base plate and the frame in only one orientation to avoid improper assembly.

- According to another embodiment, a method is provided for decorating a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin. A base plate is installed on a face of the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin. An insert is inserted between the base plate and a frame. The frame is attached to the base plate to retain the insert between the base plate and the frame and to display the insert through a view opening in the frame.
- According to a further embodiment, the frame is opened, the insert is removed, a second insert is inserted between the frame and the base plate, and the frame is closed.
- According to an even further embodiment, a product is placed in the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin.
- According to another even further embodiment, a sample of the product is installed on the second insert.
- According to another embodiment, a method is provided for decorating a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin. A frame on a face of a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin, is opened. A first insert is removed from the face. A second insert is inserted to the face. The frame is closed to the face.
- According to a further embodiment, a product is placed in the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin.
- According to an even further embodiment, a sample of the product is installed on the second insert.

Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.

FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrate a furniture ordisplay assembly 30, according to an embodiment. In the depicted embodiment,item 30 is illustrated as adisplay assembly 30. However,item 30 may be anyfurniture assembly 30, such as acabinet 30, adrawer 30, or the like. Theitem 30 may or may not be adisplay assembly 30. For example, theitem 30 may be any furniture assembly, with or without a display, ornamentation, indicia, or the like. - For the depicted embodiment, the
display assembly 30 comprises aframe 32 with a pair ofside walls 34, anupper wall 36, alower wall 38, and aback wall 40. Thewalls cavity 42 within the frame. According to an embodiment, thedisplay assembly 30 is abin assembly 30, such as atilt bin assembly 30. Thebin assembly 30 includes one bin according to an embodiment. Thebin assembly 30 includes a plurality ofbins 44 each at least partially received in thecavity 42, according to other embodiments. Thebins 44 are pivotally connected to theframe 32 astilt bins 44, with pivotal connections at a lower end of thebins 44 so that thebins 44 can be tilted forward as depicted inFIG. 3 for access to items stored within thebins 44. - Referring again to
FIGS. 1-3 , thebin assembly 30 may be utilized to store components, such as hardware within thebins 44. Thebin assembly 30 includes afascia assembly 46 to provide a display face for thebin assembly 30. For example, in a retail context, thefascia assembly 46 may be utilized to display items stored within thebins 44. Likewise, in a personal use application, thefascia assembly 46 may be employed to decorate, ornament, label, organize, or otherwise customize thebins 44. - With reference now to
FIGS. 3-7 , thefascia assembly 46 includes abase plate 48. Thebase plate 48 is attached directly to aface plate 50 of thebin 44. Thebase plate 48 and theface plate 50 are separate components so that thefascia assembly 46 can be assembled to theface plate 50 as an option or a retrofit. According to another embodiment, thebase plate 48 is formed integrally with thebin 44 as theface plate 48. - As illustrated in
FIGS. 1-7 , thefascia assembly 46 includes aportrait frame 52. Theportrait frame 52 is attachable to thebase plate 48. Theportrait frame 52 partially covers thebase plate 48. In the depicted embodiment, theportrait frame 52 extends around a periphery of thebase plate 48. According to another embodiment, theportrait frame 52 extends partially around the periphery of thebase plate 48. - The
portrait frame 52 includes anopening 54 therethrough to permit a view through theportrait frame 52. Theportrait frame 52 is pivotally connected to thebase plate 48 at ahinge 56. Thepivotal connection 56 tethers theportrait frame 52 to thebase plate 48. Thehinge 56 is oriented at a lower end of theportrait frame 52 so that theportrait frame 52 can be opened by pivoting downward as illustrated in the embodiment ofFIGS. 5-7 . According to other embodiments, thehinge 56 is oriented at a side-opening portrait frame for pivoting theportrait frame 52 about an upright axis. Theportrait frame 52 is also provided with afastener 57 to fasten theportrait frame 52 to thebase plate 48. Alternatively, instead of ahinge 56, a pair offasteners portrait frame 52 to thebase plate 48. - The
fascia assembly 46 also includes at least oneinsert 58. Theinsert 58 is sized to be received and retained between thebase plate 48 and theportrait frame 52. Theinsert 58 is sized as a panel to span an area of theopening 54 for viewing of theinsert 58 through theportrait frame opening 54. Theinsert 58 is provided with an ornamental appearance and is modular to interchange theinsert 58 withother inserts 58 for customization of thefascia assembly 46. In a retail context, theinsert 58 may be a retail chip for display of a product or product information. Theinsert 58 may be formed from plastic, wood, metal, or any suitable material. - As illustrated in
FIG. 3 , thebin assembly 30 is utilized to store a plurality ofitems 60. In a retail context, theitems 60 are products, and by way of example, the items arehardware assemblies 60, such as handles 60. Of course,other hardware assemblies 60 may be retailed, such as knobs, pulls, hooks, and the like. One of thehardware assemblies 60 is installed on theinsert 58 and extends through the portrait frame opening 54 as illustrated inFIGS. 1-4 . Thefascia assembly 46 displays a sample of the retailedhardware assembly 60 to permit a customer to inspect and interact with a sample of theproducts 60 retailed in inventory within thebin 44. The customer may also sample thehardware assembly 60 by gripping thehandle 60 in order to tilt and open thebin 44. Theinsert 58 and thefastener 57 are designed to be resilient enough to support thehardware assembly 60 and to distribute loads applied to thehardware assembly 60 to thefascia assembly 46, and consequently to thebin assembly 30. - With reference to
FIG. 7 , a plurality offasteners 62, such asmachine screws 62 are installed through a back side of theinsert 58 to attach thehardware assembly 60 to theinsert 58. Thefasteners 62 each include afastener head 64 for engaging theinsert 58. As illustrated inFIGS. 6 and 7 , a slottedaperture 66 is formed through thebase plate 48 to provide clearance for the fastener heads 64. The slottedaperture 66 is formed horizontally to accommodatefastener 62 arrangements forhandles 60, pulls and knobs. Theaperture 66 may be slotted with multiple slots or orientations, or otherwise shaped to accommodate fastener patterns ofother hardware assemblies 60. - The
base plate 48 includes aprojection 68 extending away from thebin 44 as illustrated inFIGS. 5-7 . A corresponding aperture or recess 70 (FIGS. 5 and 6 ) is formed in theinsert 58 for clearance for theprojection 68. Additionally, theprojection 68 andinsert recess 70 cooperate for alignment of theinsert 58 between theportrait frame 52 and thebase plate 48. Further, theprojection 68 also prevents improper installation of theinsert 58 at an incorrect orientation. - According to an optional embodiment, the
base plate 48 is provided with anangled projection 72 as illustrated inFIGS. 1-7 . Theangled projection 72 is provided at an incline to face slightly upward for ease in viewing in some retail environments. Theangled projection 72 is provided withinformational indicia 74 pertaining to theproducts 60 stored within thebin 44. Theindicia 74 may be indicative of product information, such as manufacturer, brand, cost, materials, a bar code, or the like. Likewise, anotheraperture 76 may be formed in theinsert 58 to provide clearance for theangled projection 72. - The
fascia assembly 46 permits modularity and customization to the face of thebin 44 or any underlying cabinet door, drawer, or the like. As illustrated inFIG. 4 , a user grasps and disengages thefastener 57 of theportrait frame 52. Then the user pivots theportrait frame 52 away from thebase plate 48 as illustrated inFIG. 5 . Next, the user removes theinsert 58 as shown inFIGS. 6 and 7 , if applicable. Next, the user inserts aninsert 58 into alignment with thebase plate 48 inFIG. 5 . Then, the user closes theportrait frame 52 to thebase plate 48 and reattaches thefastener 57 to thebase plate 48 to secure thefascia assembly 46 with theinsert 58 displayed through the portrait frame opening 54 as illustrated inFIGS. 1 and 2 . The user can also fill (or refill) thebin 44 withhardware assemblies 60 to match thehardware assembly 60 on theinsert 58. Thesample hardware assembly 60 is installed on theinsert 58 before theinsert 58 is installed in thefascia assembly 46. - The
fascia assembly 46 provides a more efficient, more aesthetic, and more versatile solution for labeling and interacting with furniture than the prior art. Instead of removing theentire fascia assembly 46, the user can remove and reinstall anotherinsert 58 to display a different product, or a different ornamental appearance. Thevarious inserts 58 can be rapidly interchanged. Theinserts 58 provide alternative aesthetic options, e.g., material, finish, color, pattern, indicia, or the like, for customization and/or updating of thefascia assembly 46. Thefascia assembly 46 may be utilized in retail, or for personal storage and organization. Additionally, theportrait frame 52 may also be provided with different ornamental appearances for further customization of thefascia assembly 46. -
FIGS. 8-12 illustrate thefascia assembly 46 in cooperation with anotherinsert 78. Theinsert 78 has a different ornamental appearance than theinsert 58 of the prior embodiment. Ahardware assembly 80 is installed to theinsert 78. Thehardware assembly 80 offers another variation in style and finish of thehandle 80. -
FIG. 8 illustrates thebin assembly 30 exploded and without theframe 32. Thebin 44 is formed with an upper,central grip portion 82 on theface plate 50. Additionally, a pair ofapertures 84 are formed through theface plate 50. As depicted inFIG. 11 , thebase plate 48 includes anoverhang retainer 86 to extend over and engage thegrip portion 82 of thebin 44. As shown inFIGS. 10 and 11 , a pair offasteners 88 extend from thebase plate 48, and engage theapertures 84 to secure thebase plate 48 to thebin 44. According to an embodiment, thefasteners 88 areinsert retainers 88 with leading edges to engage theapertures 84 and flex theretainers 88 during installation, and abutment edges to engage theapertures 84 and fasten thebase plate 48 to theface plate 50 once installed. - Referring again to
FIG. 11 , thefastener 57 of theportrait frame 52 attaches to theoverhang retainer 86 of thebase plate 48. To open thefascia assembly 46, the user grasps and flexes thefastener 57 away from theretainer 86, and then pivots theportrait frame 52 from thebase plate 48. - While various embodiments are described above, it is not intended that these embodiments describe all possible forms of the invention. Rather, the words used in the specification are words of description rather than limitation, and it is understood that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Additionally, the features of various implementing embodiments may be combined to form further embodiments of the invention.
Claims (20)
1. A fascia assembly for a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin, the fascia assembly comprising:
a base plate;
a frame attachable to the base plate, the frame having a view opening; and
an insert sized to be received and retained between the base plate and the frame and viewable through the view opening.
2. The fascia assembly of claim 1 wherein the base plate further comprises at least one fastener to fasten the base plate to a face plate of the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin.
3. The fascia assembly of claim 1 wherein the insert further comprises a panel.
4. The fascia assembly of claim 1 further comprising hardware installed on the insert.
5. The fascia assembly of claim 4 further comprising at least one fastener installed through the insert to fasten the hardware to the insert.
6. The fascia assembly of claim 5 wherein an aperture is formed through the base plate to provide clearance for a fastener head of the at least one fastener.
7. The fascia assembly of claim 6 wherein the aperture is slotted to accommodate fastener patterns of various hardware assemblies.
8. The fascia assembly of claim 1 wherein the frame is pivotally attached to the base plate.
9. The fascia assembly of claim 1 wherein the frame further comprises a fastener to fasten the frame to the base plate.
10. The fascia assembly of claim 1 wherein the insert is sized to be retained between the base plate and the frame in only one orientation to avoid improper assembly.
11. The fascia assembly of claim 1 wherein the base plate further comprises at least one projection; and
wherein the insert is provided with an aperture sized to receive the at least one projection.
12. The fascia assembly of claim 1 wherein the insert further comprises a plurality of interchangeable inserts, each sized to be received and retained between the base plate and the frame.
13. The fascia assembly of claim 1 further comprising indicia indicative of product information.
14. A method for decorating a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin, the method comprising:
installing a base plate on a face of the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin;
inserting an insert between the base plate and a frame; and
attaching the frame to the base plate to retain the insert between the base plate and the frame and to display the insert through a view opening in the frame.
15. The method of claim 14 further comprising:
opening the frame;
removing the insert;
inserting a second insert between the frame and the base plate; and
closing the frame.
16. The method of claim 15 further comprising:
placing a product in the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin.
17. The method of claim 16 further comprising:
installing a sample of the product on the second insert.
18. A method for decorating a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin, the method comprising:
opening a frame on a face of a cabinet, a drawer, or a bin;
removing a first insert from the face;
inserting a second insert to the face; and
closing the frame to the face.
19. The method of claim 18 further comprising:
placing a product in the cabinet, the drawer, or the bin.
20. The method of claim 19 further comprising:
installing a sample of the product on the second insert.
