liner 16 and thewrapper 12 are typically coupled to atrim breaker 64 to form the vacuum insulatedstructure 10. It is generally contemplated that thetrim breaker 64 may be formed from glass, plastic, metal, or other materials suitable for retaining a vacuum defined between thewrapper 12 and theliner 16 within theinsulation cavity 18. It is also contemplated that theliner 16 and thewrapper 12 are operably coupled to thetrim breaker 64 via an adhesive material that may be configured with materials, such as glass or other generally insulating materials, to minimize outgassing of theinsulation cavity 18. Theliner 16 and thewrapper 12 also define theinsulation cavity 18 therebetween in which one or more of theinsulation materials 20 may be disposed. It is generally contemplated that theinsulation materials 20 may be a glass type material, a carbon-based powder, silicone oxide-based materials, insulating gases, and otherstandard insulation materials 20 known in the art. Theinsulation materials 20 substantially fill theinsulation cavity 18 to form a substantially continuous layer between theliner 16 and thewrapper 12. Theinsulation cavity 18 is evacuated to define the vacuum insulatedstructure 10. - With further reference to
FIGS. 1-3 , holes 70 are defined by thewrapper 12 and theliner 16 to provide a passage forelectrical wiring 72 and other typical appliance lines 74. For example, when theappliance 50 is a refrigerator and/or freezer, theappliance lines 74 configured to direct water are connected to theappliance 50 and may pass through theholes 70 toward themachine compartment 22, described further below. Typically, theopenings 78 are defined along at least therear wall 52 of thewrapper 12. Theholes 70 may also be defined by arear panel 76 of theliner 16, which is disposed within thewrapper 12 to define the vacuum insulatedstructure 10, as mentioned above. Theliner 16 also defines at least oneopening 78 that may correspond to an appliance compartment. By way of example, not limitation, the at least oneopening 78 can include afirst opening 80 that corresponds to a refrigeration compartment and asecond opening 82 that corresponds to a freezer compartment with amullion 84 disposed therebetween. In such configuration, theliner 16 is generally divided, at least in part, by themullion 84 to define the first andsecond openings second openings mullion 84, such that the depictedappliance 50 is a side-by-side appliance 50. It is also contemplated that other configurations of theappliance 50 are contemplated including, but not limited to, a stacked configuration. - Referring still to
FIGS. 1-3 , therefrigeration compartment 80 may include anillumination feature 86 operably coupled to areed switch 88. Thereed switch 88 is communicatively coupled to thefirst door 56, such that when thefirst door 56 is in an open position thereed switch 88 activates theillumination feature 86 to distribute light within therefrigeration compartment 80. Thereed switch 88 is operably coupled to afront plate 90, which is operably coupled to the base rails 26, described further below. Thefront plate 90 is coupled to the mountingwall 30 of each of the base rails 26 and conceals thegap 92 defined between the base rails 26. - With reference now to
FIGS. 2-4B the first andsecond doors walls 30 of the base rails 26 via thehinges 60 coupled to thefront plate 90. The nature of the vacuum insulatedstructure 10 defined by thewrapper 12 and theliner 16 is such that thewrapper 12 and theliner 16 remain free from penetration or direct attachment with other features of theappliance 50. For example, thedoors structure 10 via thefront plate 90 coupled to the base rails 26 and via atop plate 98 coupled to thetop surface 100 of thewrapper 12. Stated differently, the vacuum defined within theinsulation cavity 18 is maintained through the coupling of thedoors front plate 90 and thetop plate 98. Thetop plate 98 can be spot welded to atop surface 100 of thewrapper 12 to minimize potential contact between thetop surface 100 of thewrapper 12 and thehinges 60 to mount thedoors hinges 60 on thetop plate 98 and thefront plate 90 minimize the strain placed upon the vacuum insulatedstructure 10 as thedoors top plate 98 and thebase plate 24 via the base rails 26 andfront plate 90. - The base rails 26, as mentioned above, include the
attachment flanges 28 and the mountingwall 30 to which thefront plate 90 is coupled. The base rails 26 each include asupport body 110 from which theattachment flanges 28 extend and to which the mountingwall 30 is coupled. Thesupport body 110 includes abottom portion 112 from which the mountingwall 30 andparallel side portions 114 extend. The attachment flanges 28 are coupled to and generally extend from theside portions 114. The attachment flanges 28 can include afirst attachment flange 116 and asecond attachment flange 118. Thefirst attachment flange 116 generally extends medially toward acenter 120 of thesupport body 110, and thesecond attachment flange 118 generally extends laterally away from thesupport body 110. For example, thesecond attachment flange 118 of thefirst rail 94 extends toward thesecond attachment flange 118 of thesecond rail 96. Stated differently, thefirst attachment flange 116 extends toward thesecond attachment flange 118, and thesecond attachment flange 118 extends away from thefirst attachment flange 116. Additionally or alternatively, the first andsecond attachment flanges support body 110 of eachbase rail 26. - With further reference to
FIGS. 2-4B , each of the base rails 26 define afront portion 122 and arear portion 124, such that thebase plate 24 is operably coupled to thefront portion 122 of the base rails 26. Themachine plate 32 is coupled to therear portion 124 to at least partially define thelower portion 34 of themachine compartment 22, described further below. Thebase plate 24 is coupled to the first andsecond attachment flanges fasteners 126, described below. The plurality offasteners 126 extend throughapertures 128 defined by theattachment flanges 28. The plurality offasteners 126 couple thebase plate 24 to thefront portion 122 of the base rails 26, and themachine plate 32 is coupled to therear portion 124 to define thelower portion 34 of themachine compartment 22, described below. - Referring now to
FIGS. 5-8 and as mentioned above, thewrapper 12 includes thesidewalls 54, the top andbottom surfaces rear wall 52. Therear wall 52 of thewrapper 12 defines acurved surface 130 to at least partially define themachine compartment 22. Thebottom surface 14 of thewrapper 12 is operably coupled to thebase plate 24, described further below. Themachine compartment 22 is defined by thecurved surface 130 of thewrapper 12 along with the base rails 26 and themachine plate 32. It is generally contemplated thatmachine components 132 are positioned on themachine plate 32 within themachine compartment 22 beneath therear wall 52 and proximate to thecurved surface 130 of thewrapper 12. For example, themachine components 132 may include, but are not limited to, acompressor 134, afan 136, and anevaporator 138. Themachine components 132 define a collective load L1 on themachine plate 32, which is generally dispersed across themachine plate 32 and the base rails 26, described further below. The load L1 is also dispersed and supported by the connection of the base rails 26 to thebase plate 24. - The
machine plate 32 is configured to support themachine components 132 within themachine compartment 22 and can be positioned over and coupled to the base rails 26. As mentioned above, thegap 92 is defined between the first and second base rails 94, 96 and themachine plate 32 may at least partially conceal thegap 92 defined between the first and second base rails 94, 96. As mentioned above, thegap 92 may provide passage for theelectrical wiring 72 and/orappliance lines 74 of theappliance 50. Thegap 92 may also provide passage for theelectrical wiring 72 and other connection lines of themachine components 132 to pass between themachine plate 32 and thecurved surface 130 and within thegap 92. - As mentioned above, the
machine components 132 generally exert the load L1 upon themachine plate 32 based on the gravitational pull on themachine components 132. It is generally contemplated that the load L1 defined by themachine components 132 may account for approximately 30- to 40-percent of the overall weight of theappliance 50. Themachine plate 32 is configured to evenly distribute the load L1 of themachine components 132 to the base rails 26. Themachine plate 32 can be coupled to the base rails 26 via spot welding to fixedly couple themachine plate 32 with the base rails 26. It is also contemplated that themachine plate 32 can be coupled to the base rails 26 via fasteners, adhesives, screws, or other coupling methods generally known. The load L1 of themachine components 132 is ultimately dispersed along the base rails 26 to minimize the engagement and stress placed upon the vacuum insulatedstructure 10, as described further below. The base rails 26 may engage thebase plate 24 in offsetting the load L1 applied by themachine components 132. The base rails 26 are operably coupled to thebase plate 24 via the plurality offasteners 126, mentioned above. - Referring still to
FIGS. 5-8 , thewrapper 12 is positioned on and coupled to thebase plate 24, which structurally supports themachine components 132 as well as theappliance 50 as a whole. Thebase plate 24 has afirst surface 150 and asecond surface 152, such that thefirst surface 150 defines aperimeter support surface 154 of thebase plate 24. Thefirst surface 150 may be defined as an engagement surface, as thefirst surface 150 is configured to engage and support theinsulated structure 10. Anaperture 156 can be defined in acentral portion 158 of thebase plate 24, described further below. Thesecond surface 152 defines a plurality ofrecesses 160 that are configured to receive the plurality offasteners 126, described below. - The
perimeter support surface 154 of thefirst surface 150 supports the vacuum insulatedstructure 10 above the base rails 26, and thebase plate 24 is operably coupled to thebottom surface 14 of thewrapper 12 via theperimeter support surface 154. Thebase plate 24 generally provides added structural base support for theappliance 50 by supporting at least a load L2 of theliner 16 and thewrapper 12. It is also contemplated that thebase plate 24 supports the load L1 of themachine components 132 within themachine compartment 22 through the coupled engagement with the base rails 26. Thesecond surface 152 of thebase plate 24 may be referred to as an attachment surface, as thesecond surface 152 is configured to couple thebase plate 24 to the base rails 26 via the plurality offasteners 126, described below. - Referring still to
FIGS. 5-8 , thebase plate 24 is illustrated as defining theaperture 156 in thecentral portion 158 of thebase plate 24. Arib 162 may be defined along thebottom surface 14 of thewrapper 12 that can be at least partially disposed within theaperture 156 defined by thebase plate 24. Therib 162 may assist in redistributing the load L2 to thebase plate 24 through lateral engagement with thebase plate 24 within theaperture 156. The incorporation of theaperture 156 may provide advantageous cost benefits during manufacturing of theappliance 50. Additionally or alternatively, thebase plate 24 can be a single piece of material extending along thebottom surface 14 of thewrapper 12. It is generally contemplated that thebase plate 24 may be formed from metal. It is also contemplated that thebase plate 24 may be formed from a rigid plastic, composite material, or other practicable materials for supporting the loads L1, L2 of themachine components 132 and theliner 16 and thewrapper 12, respectively. - As illustrated in
FIGS. 5 and 6 , thebase plate 24 at least partially extends over thegap 92 defined between the base rails 26. The extension of thebase plate 24 across thegap 92 structurally supports the vacuum insulatedstructure 10 along thebottom surface 14 of thewrapper 12. The base rails 26 assist in structurally supporting the vacuum insulatedstructure 10, and thebase plate 24 extending over thegap 92 assists in supporting afront edge 146 and arear edge 148 of the vacuum insulatedstructure 10. - The
base plate 24 is operably coupled to the base rails 26 along thesecond surface 152. The plurality offasteners 126 extend from therecesses 160 defined by thesecond surface 152 to couple to theattachment flanges 28 of the base rails 26 to thebase plate 24. As mentioned above, the base rails 26 are positioned proximate to thesidewalls 54 of thewrapper 12 and coupled to thebase plate 24. The base rails 26 may at least partially extend beyond thecurved surface 130 of thewrapper 12 to lie substantially perpendicular with therear wall 52 of thewrapper 12. As mentioned above, the base rails 26 are coupled to themachine plate 32 and are configured to assist in distributing the load L1 of themachine components 132 from themachine plate 32 along each of the base rails 26. The base rails 26 may engage thebase plate 24 in redistributing the load L1 of themachine components 132. Thebase plate 24 may cooperate with the base rails 26 to balance the loads L1, L2 of themachine components 132 and the vacuum insulatedstructure 10, respectively. - Referring again to
FIGS. 1-8 , thebase plate 24 and the base rails 26 are configured to assist in overall load distribution of theappliance 50 to minimize the forces acting upon the vacuum insulatedstructure 10. The load bearing configuration of thebase plate 24 and the base rails 26 minimizes the strain placed on thebottom surface 14 of thewrapper 12, which minimizes potential for outgassing via lapse in structural integrity that may otherwise occur. Thebase plate 24 is spot welded along thefirst surface 150 to thebottom surface 14 of thewrapper 12 to avoid penetrating thewrapper 12. Further, the plurality offasteners 126 are welded to thesecond surface 152 within therecesses 160 defined along thesecond surface 152 and then coupled to each of the base rails 26. The attachment flanges 28 of the base rails 26 assist in coupling the base rails 26 to thebase plate 24 with minimal additional structural configuration of thesupport body 110, which helps to minimize overall production and manufacturing costs. - In addition, the mounting
walls 30 assist in attachment of thefront plate 90 and, ultimately, thedoors appliance 50 while leaving the vacuum insulatedstructure 10 free from penetration. Thefront plate 90 can be coupled directly to the base rails 26 via the mountingwall 30, such that the vacuum insulatedstructure 10 can remain free from penetration by attachment features, such as the hinges 60. Thegap 92 assists in placement of thereed switch 88 within thegap 92 behind thefront plate 90 as well as room forother appliance lines 74 to be positioned beneath the vacuum insulatedstructure 10 between the base rails 26. Thefront plate 90 also assists in covering and concealing thegap 92 defined between the first andsecond rails gap 92 by thefront plate 90 minimizes the potential for items to be positioned beneath theappliance 50 within thegap 92.
