- the spring 32 thereby exerts a bias force on the shank 200 via the angular wall 95 and each of the detent balls 30 , thereby locking the shank 200 in place within the bore 50 .
- FIG. 7 there is shown a cross-sectional view of the drill chuck assembly along its longitudinal axis while in its second position, thereby allowing removal of a drill bit shank from the bore.
- the sleeve 25 is moved downwardly along the body 15 towards the bottom end 65 of the body 15 and against the bias force of the spring 32 , thereby compressing the spring 32 .
- the detent balls 30 are permitted to move laterally within the slots 75 due to the increasing depth of the channel 90 .
- the lateral force exerted on the drill bit shank 200 by the detent balls 30 is removed, thereby unlocking the shank 200 and allowing the shank 200 to be removed from the bore 50 .

Abstract
A drill chuck assembly. The drill chuck assembly includes a rapid change mechanism configured to retain a drill bit shank inserted therein. The drill chuck assembly includes a body having a bore with a trilobe cross-section that is configured to receive a triangular and hexagonally shaped drill bit shank, interchangeably. The bore includes a slot positioned in each lobe that slidably contains a detent ball therein. A collar is affixed annularly around the body and defines a channel extending around the body. A sleeve is slidably mounted around the body. The sleeve includes a tapered end that is slidably disposed within the channel and has circular apertures that are in communication with the slots of the bore for reception of the detent balls. The sleeve is spring biased towards the collar, which forces the detent balls against an angular wall within the channel. The angular wall in turn forces the detent balls laterally towards a center of the bore, thereby exerting a force on a drill bit shank inserted into the bore and preventing the withdrawal of the shank from the bore. When the bias force of the sleeve is counteracted by sliding the sleeve about its longitudinal axis, the detent balls move outwardly along the angular wall, thereby relieving the force exerted onto the shank by the wall and allowing the shank to be withdrawn.
Description
- This application claims priority from and is a continuation application of co-pending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 15/380,644 filed on Dec. 15, 2016 which is a continuation application of U.S. Pat. No. 9,579,731 filed on Jul. 29, 2016, which claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 62/198,324 filed on Jul. 29, 2015. The above identified patent applications are herein incorporated by reference in their entirety to provide continuity of disclosure.
- The present invention relates to drill chucks for use with drills or with electric or pneumatic power drivers. More specifically, the present invention relates to a keyless drill chuck assembly having a central bore with a trilobe profile configured to receive a triangular and hexagonally shaped drill bit shank interchangeably and a quick release mechanism configured to receive the drill bit shanks automatically.
- There are a variety of different drill chucks involving different tool locking mechanisms. For example, there are jawed chucks, which have many dogs or jaw-like members that are tightened to lock the tool in place. Often the jaws will be tightened or loosened with the help of a chuck key, which is a wrench-like tool made for the purpose of tightening and loosening the shafts of tools in the chuck. However, there are many jawed chucks of the keyless variety, which involve the tightening and loosening of tools therein by hand force alone. Keyless designs offer the convenience of quicker and easier “chucking” and “unchucking,” i.e., tightening and loosening the tool in the chuck, but have lower gripping force to hold the tool. Additionally, there are collet chucks, which rather than having jaws, have collets, which are flexible collars or sleeves that fit closely around the tool or workpiece and grip it when squeezed.
- When employing the majority of these chucks, however, it is often difficult for a user to quickly change a drill bit for another. For instance, the majority of chucks can neither accept different drill bits, which then requires the changing of the chuck altogether if a different drill bit is required, nor have releasing mechanisms that enable a user to change the drill bit without having to manipulate the chuck with their hands. For instance, the majority of jawed chucks require the use of a chuck key, which is a wrench-like tool requiring a user to insert the key into the chuck and twist and turn the key in order to tighten or loosen the drill bit. Moreover, the majority of chucks are developed to enable only one type of drill bit to be inserted therein. Furthermore, there are instances when a chuck's releasing mechanism is not directly accessible by a user, thereby requiring the user to manipulate the tool more than necessary. These are setbacks that slows a user's work and makes it awkward for him or her to quickly exchange one drill bit shank for another. Thus, there is a need for a drill chuck assembly in which both a triangular and hexagonal drill bit shank may be inserted and secured automatically therein.
- In view of the foregoing disadvantages inherent in the known types of drill chucks now present in the prior art, the present invention provides a drill chuck assembly wherein the same can be utilized for providing convenience for the user when employing a variety of drill bits on one power driver. The present system provides a drill chuck assembly including a body having an upper end, a lower end configured to threadably engage a rotational drive, and a bore extending longitudinally therethrough, the bore including a trilobe configuration configured to interchangeably receive a triangular drill bit shank and a hexagonal drill bit shank, a plurality of slots extending longitudinally along the body, one of the plurality of slots disposed at each lobe of the body, wherein the plurality of slots are in communication with the bore, a collar disposed about the body at the upper end thereof, the collar including an angled wall, wherein the angled wall and the body defined a channel therebetween, the channel including a depth that increases from the upper end towards the lower end, a sleeve slidably positioned along the body, the sleeve longitudinally slidable between a first position and a second position, the sleeve biased to the first position by a spring, the sleeve including a plurality of apertures, wherein each of the plurality of apertures are aligned and in communication with one of the plurality of slots between the first position and the second position, a plurality of detent balls, one of the plurality of detent balls positioned in one of the plurality of apertures and extending into one of the plurality of slots aligned therewith, wherein the plurality of detent balls are slidable along the plurality of slots, the plurality of detent balls including a diameter larger than a width of the plurality of slots, wherein the plurality of detent balls are configured to laterally depress and transition longitudinally along the angled wall when a drill bit shank is inserted into the bore, thereby sliding the sleeve towards the lower end to a locked position in which the depth of the channel is equal to the diameter of the plurality of detent balls, the locked position securing the drill bit shank within the bore via a bias force exerted by the spring, and wherein moving the sleeve to the second position moves the plurality of detent balls to a position in the channel wherein the depth is larger than the diameter of the plurality of detent balls, releasing the drill bit shank.

Thebore 50 terminates in thebody 15 at abottom end 65, which in turn is coupled to theplug 34. Thebottom end 65 of the bore includes anopening 68 and ashelf 66 that acts to block theplug 34 when inserted into thelower end 45 of the body from going into thebore 50. Theshelf 66 is situated perpendicularly relative to the longitudinal axis of thebore 50. Thebody 15 includes atubular channel 42 that extends perpendicularly relative to the longitudinal axis of thebody 15. Thelower end 45 of thebody 15 includes a secondopen end 46 enabling insertion of theplug 34 therein. Thelower end 45 includes a threadedengagement 48 that is configured to threadably couple to an arbor of a rotational drive. In one embodiment, the threadedengagement 48 is sized to threadably receive a variety of differently sized extension shanks having the same thread thereon. - Each
lobe 70 includes aslot 75 disposed along the longitudinal axis of thebody 15. Theslots 75 are positioned in between theupper end 40 and thebottom end 65, such that theupper end 40 is above theslots 75 and thebottom end 65 is below theslots 75. Theslots 75 extend entirely though thebody 15 such that eachslot 75 communicates with thebore 50. Theslots 75 are elongated and oblong in shape, such that thedetent balls 30 may move along the longitudinal axis of theslots 75 when positioned therein. - The
collar 20 is pressedly mounted to thebody 15 such that it is disposed annularly therearound. Thecollar 20 is positioned adjacent to theupper end 40 of the front portion 35, such that itsupper surface 22 is aligned with theupper end 40 of thebody 15. After thecollar 20 is mounted onto thebody 15, a snap ring can be inserted into thenotch 58 of thebody 15 to hold thecollar 20 in place and prevent it from becoming loosened or falling off of thebody 15. Thecollar 20 includes a taperedportion 80 that defines achannel 90 that extends annularly around thebore 50. When thecollar 20 is secured to thebody 15, thechannel 90 is disposed around theslots 75. Thechannel 90 includes anangular wall 95 that terminates at alongitudinal wall 100. Theangular wall 95 extends outwardly towards thebottom end 65 of thebore 50, thereby increasing the depth of thechannel 90 towards thebottom end 65, while thelongitudinal wall 100 extends from the end of theangular wall 95 towards thebottom end 65 of thebody 15, parallel to thebody 15. Theangular wall 95 is positioned adjacent to theslots 75, such that theangular wall 95 is in communication with theslots 75. - The
sleeve 25 is slidably mounted around thebody 15 and is disposed annularly therearound. Thesleeve 25 includes atapered end 105, which is slidably disposed within thechannel 90 of thecollar 20, such that thetapered end 105 can slide along the longitudinal axis of thebody 15 and within thechannel 90. Thetapered end 105 includescircular apertures 110, which correspond and are aligned with theslots 75 of thebody 15, such that theapertures 110 are in communication with theslots 75 of thebore 50. Thedetent balls 30 extend through thecircular apertures 110 of thesleeve 25 into theslots 75 of thebody 15, which prevents thesleeve 25 from rotating about thebody 15. In the depicted embodiment, thesleeve 25 includes aknurled portion 115 which provides a grip for grasping and actuating thesleeve 25. - The
detent balls 30 are slidably disposed within theapertures 110 of thesleeve 25 and theslots 75 of thebore 50, which are circumferentially aligned, such that they are positioned within thechannel 90 of thecollar 20. Thecollar 20 prevents thedetent balls 30 from leaving their position within thechannel 90 and completely falling out of thebody 15. The diameter of thedetent balls 30 is greater than the width of the innermost end of theslots 75 of thebody 15, preventing thedetent balls 30 from completely passing through theslots 75 into thebore 50 of thebody 15. - The
spring 32 is disposed between abody shoulder 120 on thebody 15 and asleeve shoulder 125 on thesleeve 25. Thespring 32 is a compression spring, whereby thespring 32 compresses as a load or force is applied to thesleeve 25. Thespring 32 is biased towards theupper end 40 of thebody 15, i.e. thespring 32 exerts a force along the longitudinal axis of thebody 15 towards theupper end 40 thereof when compressed. When thesleeve 25 is biased towards theupper end 40, thedetent balls 30 in thechannel 90 engage theangular wall 95 of thechannel 90 and are pushed through theslots 75 of thebore 50, such that thedetent balls 30 protrude inwardly towards the center of thebore 50. Thesleeve 25 is transitionable along thebody 15 between a first position (wherein the spring is extended) and a second position (wherein the spring is entirely compressed). Thespring 32 acquires more compression as thesleeve 25 is transitioned from its first position to its second position. - The
plug 34 is positioned in an interior of thebody 15 and disposed annularly around the interior surface thereof. Theplug 34 includes aplug shoulder 130 coupled to thebore 50 of thebody 15. Theplug shoulder 130 is situated perpendicularly relative to the longitudinal axis of thebody 15. When a drill bit shank is inserted into thebody 15 through thebore 50, theplug shoulder 130 of theplug 34 acts to block the drill bit shank from passing into theopening 68 of thebody 15 and allows the drill bit shank to rest thereagainst. Theplug 34 has agrove 135 disposed annularly therearound. Theplug 34 is configured to be inserted into thelower end 46 of thebody 15, as show inFIG. 1 , until theplug shoulder 130 reaches theshelf 66 on thebottom end 65 of thebody 15. Theshelf 66 acts to stop theplug 34 in the interior of thebody 15 and to prevent it from moving into thebore 50. When theplug 34 is inserted into thebody 15 thegroove 135 is aligned with thetubular channel 42 of thebody 15, such that thegroove 135 is in communication with thetubular channel 42. Thechannel 42 is configured to receive adowel pin 36 therethrough, such that thedowel pin 36 extends across thebody 15 into thegroove 135, fastening theplug 34 in place within thebody 15. Theplug 34 further includes abore 140 that extends longitudinally through theplug 34. Thetubular channel 42 of thebody 15 is offset from thebore 140 of theplug 34, as shown byFIG. 4 , such that when thedowel pin 36 is inserted through thechannel 42, thedowel pin 36 does not extend through thebore 140. -
FIG. 2 illustrates a view of the drill chuck assembly in its first positon prior to insertion of a drill bit shank into thebore 50. Thedrill check assembly 10 stays in the first position until ashank 200 comes into contact with thedetent balls 30 as theshank 200 enters thebore 50. Thedrill chuck assembly 10 maintains its first position when resting because thespring 32 is biased to push thesleeve 25 longitudinally towards theupper end 40 of thebody 15. As thedetent balls 30 rest within theapertures 110 of the sleeve, the action of thespring 32 on thesleeve 25 causes thesleeve 25 to push thedetent balls 30 through thechannel 90 and along theslots 75 of thebore 50. As thedetent balls 30 are transitioned through thechannel 90, thedetent balls 30 make contact with theangular wall 95 of thecollar 20, which in turn pushes thedetent balls 30 laterally inwardly towards the center of thebore 50 until thedetent balls 30 reach the terminus of theslots 75. When thedetent balls 30 reach the terminus of theslots 75 in which they are positioned, thedetent balls 30 thereby prevent thesleeve 25 from moving further towards theupper end 40 of thebody 15. In the first position thedetent balls 30 are in their most inwardly protruding position. Thedetent balls 30 are prevented from passing through theslots 75 into thebore 50 because the diameter of thedetent balls 30 is larger than the width of theslots 75. - Referring now to
FIG. 5 , there is shown a cross-sectional view of the drill chuck assembly along its longitudinal axis as a drill bit shank is inserted into the bore. As ashank 200 is inserted into thebore 50 of thedrill bit assembly 10, theshank 200 makes contact with thedetents balls 30, which protrude inwardly into thebore 50 when the drill chuck assembly is in its first position. Theshank 200 in turn exerts a lateral force on thedetent balls 30, which pushes thedetent balls 30 laterally outwardly relative to thebore 50 along theangular wall 95 of thecollar 20. As thedetent balls 30 move along theangular wall 95, thedetent balls 30 move downwardly along theirrespective slots 75 within theapertures 110 of thesleeve 25 towards thebottom end 65 of thebody 15. As the width of thechannel 90 increases towards thebottom end 65 due to theangular wall 95 being angled away from thebore 50, thedetent balls 30 are permitted to move laterally. The movement of thedetent balls 30 along theangular wall 95 in turn causes thesleeve 25 to slide towards thebottom end 65 of thebody 15, compressing thespring 32. - Referring now to
FIG. 6 , there is shown a cross-sectional view of the drill chuck assembly along its longitudinal axis after a drill bit shank has been inserted into the bore and is locked therein. Theshank 200 can progress into thebore 50 until theend 205 of theshank 200 makes contact with theplug shoulder 130 of theplug 34. Theplug 34 thereby dictates the depth to which theshank 200 can extend into thebore 50. When theshank 200 is fully inserted into thebore 50, i.e. theend 205 of theshank 200 makes contact with theplug shoulder 130 of theplug 34, thedetent balls 30 are held in place against theshank 200 by the longitudinal force exerted by thecompressed spring 32, which is biased to press thesleeve 25 towards theupper end 40 of thebody 15. The longitudinal force exerted by thecompressed spring 32 forces thesleeve 25, and thus likewise thedetent balls 30, to a locked position, i.e., the farthest position along theslots 75 and towards theupper end 40 that is permitted by the distance between theangular wall 95 and the surface of theshank 200. Thespring 32 thereby exerts a bias force on theshank 200 via theangular wall 95 and each of thedetent balls 30, thereby locking theshank 200 in place within thebore 50. - Referring now to
FIG. 7 , there is shown a cross-sectional view of the drill chuck assembly along its longitudinal axis while in its second position, thereby allowing removal of a drill bit shank from the bore. To remove adrill bit shank 200 from thebore 50, thesleeve 25 is moved downwardly along thebody 15 towards thebottom end 65 of thebody 15 and against the bias force of thespring 32, thereby compressing thespring 32. As thesleeve 25 is moved downwardly along thebody 15, thedetent balls 30 are permitted to move laterally within theslots 75 due to the increasing depth of thechannel 90. When the distance between theangular wall 95 and theshank 200, i.e., the depth, is larger than the diameter of thedetent balls 30, the lateral force exerted on thedrill bit shank 200 by thedetent balls 30 is removed, thereby unlocking theshank 200 and allowing theshank 200 to be removed from thebore 50. - It is therefore submitted that the instant invention has been shown and described in various embodiments. It is recognized, however, that departures may be made within the scope of the invention and that obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
- Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
