Tannehill, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Western Tablet & Dayton, Ohio Application November 8,
Stationery Corporation,
1934, Serial No. 751,986
18 Claims. (Cl. 129-11) The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a temporary binder or loose sheet holder permitting the sheets to lie flat and at the same time one which has the quick opening 5 and closing features of the prong type of binder.
Second, to provide a temporary binder or loose sheet holder having straight posts so that all of the sheets are held with their edges in substantial alignment and at the same time are fully accessible for removal or replacement.
Third, to provide an improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder having these advantages which has few parts and these simple and economical and easily assembled.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a temporary binder embodying the features of my invention with the binder open, portions only of the bottom cover and back being illustrated.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view on a line corresponding to line 22 of Figs. 1, 3, and 4.
Fig. 3- is an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view.
Fig. 5 is an inverted view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention, the cover or support being omitted.
Fig. 6 is a detail section on line 6-6 of Figs. 5 and '7.
Fig. 7 is a detail section on line 1-1 of Figs. 5 and 6.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, I represents the rear or bottom support of the binder, and 2 the back which is flexibly connected to the cover I by the hinge 3. The top, cover is not illustrated but it will be understood that it may be connected to the back the same as is illustrated at 3. 4 represents loose sheets or leaves having post openings 5 therein.
The binder mechanism, that is, the mechanism aside from the covers or other support, comprises a channeled base member 6 formed of resilient 5O sheet metal and preferably having a. longitudinal central corrugation-like rib l at the center of its web. The flanges 8 of the base member rest upon the support I, the base member being secured to the support as by means of the rivets 9 arranged centrally through the web of the base member.
Recesses I0 are preferably provided to receive the upper ends of the rivets.
Posts I I, a pair of which are shown in the embodiment illustrated, are provided with horizontal supporting arms I2 which in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4 are arranged through and secured within the flanges of the. base member, the rear ends of the arms being upset or riveted at I3. These rear ends are preferably upwardly ofiset so that the forward portions of the arms rest upon the cover or the support. The angular ofi'set portions I4 of the posts I I engage the front flanges so that'it is only necessary to upset the ends of the arms to effectively secure the posts in position.
The rocker bar I5 terminating at its ends in L- shaped guards I6 is arranged within the channeled base member above the arms and in bearing engagement within the longitudinal rib 1 of the base member. This rocker bar has downward offsets I 1 adjacent its said guards in sliding supporting engagement with the arms, the ofisets being laterally distorted as shown in Fig. 2 so that when the guards are in closed position as shown in Fig. 2, the point of contact of the oifsets with the arms is at one side of the vertical plane of the axis of the rocker bar, and when in open position it is at the other side, as shown by dotted lines. As the parts are assembled under spring tension, this results in holding the guards in both closed and open positions.
In the embodimentof my invention shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 the posts I8 are provided with horizontal arms l9 connected by the angled bar 20. The post arms and bar are formed integrally of a piece of wire, preferably of oval cross section. The base member 2| in this embodiment is provided with inturned portions 22 at the lower edges of its flanges 23, the angled bar 20 being engaged between the flanges above these inturned edges under tension of the resilient base member so that the parts are held in assembled relation without further securing means. The arms of the posts are arranged through notches 24 provided therefor in the front flange of the base member.
The rocker bar 25 has bearing engagement with the web of the base member, which is preferably longitudinally ribbed at 26 to provide an inwardly facing bearing for the rocker bar, the rocker bar being offset at 2! as in the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 4 and the offsets being in supporting engagement with the arms of the posts. The rocker bar terminates in this embodiment illustrated with angled or L-shaped guards 28 coacting with the posts.
While this embodiment of Figs. 5, 6, and '7 requires a little more stock in the post supporting members than that shown in Figs. 1 to 4, no riveting operations are required in assembling. At the same time the parts are very securely retained and cannot become displaced, particularly when the base member is mounted on the cover or supporting holes 29 are provided corresponding to the'holes II) for receiving the attaching rivets 9 or other suitable attaching means. plate may be formed of quite lightmaterial and at the same time the structure when: assembled is strong and durable. The sheets are effectively held and the writing portion thereof lies flat upon the support.
I have not in the accompanying drawings attempted to show the size of the various figures in,
relative proportion. I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I find very satisfactory, I have not attempted to illustrate and describe other modifications or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is: Y
