IMPROVEMENT INBRUSHES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,708, dated March 26, 1878; application led September 10, 1877.
can be packed away in a small compass, in
such a manner that it shall combine in one article the following several parts, namely: a scraper, a brush for removing mud and dust, a brush for applying blacking, a polishingbrush, and a clothes-brush, the Whole being so arranged as to eect the several operations in a very efficient manner, and so as to be capable of bein g packed away in very small compass.
My said invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement ofthe several parts, as hereinafter particularly described, so as to form a combined shoe and clothes brush, with the several adjuncts above mentioned.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved shoe and clothes brush 5 Fig. 2, a plan view of the portion thereof forming the mud-brush and brush for applying blacking detached for use, and Fig. 3 an end View of the main brush.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the several gures.
A is the main brush, consisting of a shoepolishing brush, a, on one side, and a clothesbrush, b, on the other side. The hairs or bristles forming these brushes are secured within the back c, of Wood or other' suitable material, in the ordinary manner, or by the means usually employed for iiXing bristles in brushes. d is a mud-brush, for removing mud and dust from the shoe before applying the blacking, and e is a brush for applying the blacking.
These two brushes d and e are secured upon a separate handle, F, on one end thereof, and on the other end of the said handle is a scraper, m, consisting of a small metal plate let into and secured within the said handle, the said scraper being for the purpose of removing mud from the crevioes between the sole and upper leather of the shoe, or from other parts. y
A slot or mortise, p, is formed in the back 0,'to receive the handle F, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the combined brush may be packed away snugly and in small compass when not in use. This mortise is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
My combined brush, constructed as herein described, forms a very convenient article for the use of travelers and others, and may be manufactured and sold at a small price, as it obviates the necessity of having separate brushes for the different purposes.
o is a ring for convenience in withdrawing the handle F and brushes d and.l e.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combined shoe and clothes brush herein described, consisting of the polishingbrush a and clothes-brush b, arranged upon the back o, provided with a slot, p, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The brushes d and e, arranged upon the.
handle F, as shown, the latter being provided with a scraper, m, and litting into the slot p, as set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a combined shoe and clothes brush, having a polishing-brush, a, a clothes-brush, 4b, a mudbrush, d, a brush, e, for applying blacking,
and a scraper, m, constructed and :arranged, in relation to the handle F and slot p in the.
back c, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
