Theband 10 could also be wider or narrower than theband 10 illustrated inFIG. 1 and could have different patterns, such as thematic patterns or designs (e.g., a pattern or design based on a movie or book). The clip-ondevice 14 could be an electronic device (e.g., such an Apple® iPod Nano device), as illustrated inFIG. 1 , or could comprise a piece of jewelry or other ornamental item. Also, theband 10 could be secured around other portions of a person's body, such as around a person's bicep or waist. Theband 10 could be made from various materials, such as leather, nylon, neoprene, or a polymer. -
FIG. 2 a illustrates a top view of one embodiment of aband 10 shown together with a clip-ondevice 14, whileFIG. 2 b illustrates a top perspective view of one embodiment of theband 10 shown without a clip-ondevice 14. As illustrated, theband 10 includes afirst opening 11 and asecond opening 13. It should also be noted that, as illustrated, thefirst opening 11 and thesecond opening 13 are each rectangular in shape, although other shapes may be utilized. Also, each of theopenings band 10, mutually exclusive, and not connected). Thefirst opening 11 and thesecond opening 13 each have a narrow dimension 15 a-b and a wide dimension 17 a-b. As illustrated, theband 10 is generally rectangular in shape, but may have other shapes, as illustrated, for example, inFIG. 9 . Referring still toFIGS. 2 a-b, theband 10 may include various types of securing mechanisms for securing one part of theband 10 to another part of theband 10, such as Velcro®, a clasp, button studs, or a buckle. The embodiment illustrated inFIGS. 2 a-b illustrate the use ofbutton studs 8 a-d. Thebutton studs 8 a-d are secured within openings 9 a-h on one side of theband 10. Thebutton studs 8 a-d may be secured withinopenings 9 i-l, and on the opposite side of theband 10 to selectively secure theband 10 around the wrist of a person. The number and positioning of openings 9 a-l andbutton studs 8 a-d may be varied within the scope of the disclosed subject matter. - As illustrated in
FIGS. 2 a-b, theband 10 includes a centralplanar member 5 and two strap members 7 a-b extending away from the centralplanar member 5. In the illustrated embodiment, the strap members 7 a-b may extend in opposite directions away from the centralplanar member 5. The centralplanar member 5 may include the first andsecond openings device 14. The strap members 7 a-b are secured to each other when theband 10 is secured to a person. -
FIGS. 3 a-e illustrate various views of one type of a clip-ondevice 14 that may be utilized in connection with a disclosedband 10. More specifically, thedevice 14 includes a hingedplate 16 with a proximal portion 18 (the portion of the hingedplate 16 adjacent to or abutting the hinge 26), aproximal edge 20 adjoining theproximal portion 18, a distal portion 22 (the portion of the hingedplate 16 adjacent to or abutting a securing protrusion 30), and adistal edge 24 adjoining thedistal portion 22. A pivotinghinge 26 pivotally secures theproximal portion 18 of the hingedplate 16 to abody 28 of thedevice 14. The securingprotrusion 30 may extend from thedistal portion 22 of the hingedplate 16. The clip-ondevice 14 illustrated inFIGS. 3 a-e is shown in a closed position (i.e., the hingedplate 16 is in a closed position when the securingprotrusion 30 is abutting or close to thebody 28 of the device 14). The hingedplate 16 may be biased in the closed position, for example, by a spring (not shown) within thehinge 26. -
FIG. 4 illustrates a side view of one embodiment of a clip-ondevice 14 shown in an open position (i.e., the hingedplate 16 is in an open position when the securingprotrusion 30 is more remote from thebody 28 of thedevice 14 relative to the closed position). -
FIGS. 5 a-e illustrate a method of utilizing one embodiment of a disclosedband 10 in connection with a clip-ondevice 14. As illustrated inFIG. 5 a, the hingedplate 16 of the clip-ondevice 14 is in an open position (although not fully open) in preparation for inserting thedistal edge 24 of the hingedplate 16 into thefirst opening 11 of theband 10.FIG. 5 b illustrates thedistal portion 22 of the hingedplate 16 positioned within thefirst opening 11. InFIG. 5 c, thedistal portion 22 of the hingedplate 16 has passed through thefirst opening 11 and is being moved toward thesecond opening 13.FIG. 5 d illustrates the securingprotrusion 30 just prior to positioning the securingprotrusion 30 within thesecond opening 13.FIG. 5 e illustrates the clip-ondevice 14 positioned within theband 10, and also illustrates the clip-ondevice 14 from a bottom view positioned within theband 10. As shown, peripheral portions band 10 are intermediate the edges of theband 10 and the first andsecond openings 11, 13 (shown inFIG. 2 b). Theperipheral portions device 14 within theband 10. A top view of such a configuration is illustrated, for example, inFIGS. 1 and 2 a. A side view of such a configuration is illustrated inFIG. 6 . - As shown in
FIG. 6 , the clip-ondevice 14, because of the configuration of theband 10, rests directly on top of the band 10 (i.e., there is no space between theband 10 and thedevice 14 in the illustrated embodiment). As such, the clip-ondevice 14 is closely secured to theband 10 and thus is less likely to be dislodged from theband 10. Because theopenings device 14 secured within theband 10 is constrained in movement in all directions. -
FIG. 7 is a drawing illustrating a cross-sectional view of one embodiment the centralplanar member 5 of a disclosedband 10 shown together with a clip-ondevice 14 across a line 7-7 fromFIG. 5 e. A bandopening exterior distance 60 spans from thedistal edge 56 a of thefirst opening 11 and thedistal edge 56 b of the secondenclosed opening 13 along thelatitudinal dimension 63. As illustrated, thecentral axis distance 50 of the clip-ondevice 14 is greater than the band openinginterior distance 58 and less than the bandopening exterior distance 60 along thelatitudinal dimension 63. Thecentral axis distance 50, in certain embodiments, may be approximately 26.0 millimeters or 19.95 millimeters. - In addition, a hinged
plate distance 62 spans between the proximal anddistal edges plate 16 along thelatitudinal dimension 63. As shown, in one embodiment, the hingedplate distance 62 is greater than or equal to the bandopening exterior distance 60. Such a configuration enables the clip-ondevice 14 to be more securely retained within theband 10. As illustrated, the hingedplate 16 is in a closed position such that the hingedplate 16, securingprotrusion 30, thehinge 26, and thebody 28 of thedevice 14 are positioned around theintermediary portion 74 of the material intermediate the first andsecond openings -
FIG. 8 is a drawing illustrating a cross-sectional view of thehinge 26 and the securingprotrusion 30 of the clip-ondevice 14 shown with a top view of the centralplanar member 5 of a disclosedband 10 across a line 8-8 fromFIG. 6 . As indicated previously, theplanar member 5 may have alongitudinal dimension 61,latitudinal dimension 63, andtransverse dimension 65. Thelongitudinal dimension 61 may extend generally across theplanar member 5 from afirst strap member 7 a to asecond strap member 7 b. Thelongitudinal dimension 61, thelatitudinal dimension 63, and thetransverse dimension 65 are each mutually perpendicular and form a three-dimensional axis. - As illustrated by the cross-section of the

As illustrated, thelatitudinal axis 73 a of thefirst opening 11 may be generally aligned with thelatitudinal axis 73 b of thesecond opening 13 along thelongitudinal dimension 61. In one embodiment, generally aligned may signify within 0.1 inches of being perfectly aligned along thelongitudinal dimension 61. In other embodiments, generally aligned may signify within 0.5 inches or less of being perfectly aligned. -
FIG. 8 further illustrates a cross-sectional view of thehinge 26 and of the securingprotrusion 30. In some embodiments, the cross-sectional view may vary depending upon the position where the cross-section is taken within thehinge 26 or securingprotrusion 30, such as could be the case, for example, with ahinge 26 illustrated inFIG. 3 e (which varies in width). In one embodiment, the cross-section is taken across one or more areas (such as the largest cross-sectional area) in which thehinge 26 or securingprotrusion 30 is or is likely to be positioned within the first orsecond openings device 14 is secured to theband 10. In one embodiment, the cross-section comprises the largest cross-sectional area of theentire hinge 26 or securingprotrusion 30. In one embodiment, thehinge 26 or securingprotrusion 30 may have one or more open spaces disposed therein. Thus, the cross-sectional view of thehinge 26 or securingprotrusion 30 illustrated inFIG. 8 show exterior boundaries of thehinge 26 or securingprotrusion 30 taken at a particular cross-section. -
FIG. 9 illustrates an alternative embodiment of awearable band 910. The illustratedwearable band 910 includes a centralplanar member 905 and strap members 907 a-b extending away from the central planar member. As illustrated, narrowing regions 915 a-b are positioned between the centralplanar member 905 and each of the strap members 907 a-b. A first and asecond opening 911, 913 are disposed within the centralplanar member 905 and receive a clip-on device 14 (shown inFIG. 1 ). Thewearable band 910 may be made from a resilient material, such as silicon, a resilient cloth, a plastic, or a polymer. In addition, thewearable band 910 may be made from leather or metal. Theband 910 may be also formed from multiple types of materials, such as metal and silicone. For example, the centralplanar member 905 may be made from leather or metal and the strap members 907 a-b may be made from metal, leather, cloth, or silicone. - The embodiment of
FIG. 9 includesbuckle openings 960 on one of thestrap members 907 b. The embodiment illustrated inFIG. 9 may also include abuckle mechanism 962 on theother strap member 907 a. Thebuckle mechanism 962 andbuckle openings 960 allow thewearable band 910 to be secured, for example, around a user's arm and comprise an example of a securing mechanism. Securingloops 963 may also be included for retaining astrap end 965. -
FIGS. 10-11 illustrate one embodiment of aclip dock 1000 together with a clip-ondevice 1014.FIG. 10 comprises a partially exploded view of theclip dock 1000, whileFIG. 11 provides a perspective view of theclip dock 1000 in a closed position with a clip dock secured within a receivingmember 1002 of theclip dock 1000. Theclip dock 1000 enables different types ofdevices 1014 to be secured to a wearable band (e.g., 10 or 910). For example, the wearable band (e.g., 910) may be configured to receive and interlock with a particular type ofdevice 14. Theclip dock 1000 allows other types ofdevices 1014 to be secured to the wearable band (e.g., 910) without the need to purchase a new wearable band (e.g., 910) specifically adapted for the type ofdevice 1014 at issue. Accordingly, if the configuration of a new generation of thedevice 1014 is different than the prior generation, the same wearable band (e.g., 910) may be utilized through use of theclip dock 1000. - The
clip dock 1000 includes a receivingmember 1002. The receivingmember 1002 is configured to receive thedevice 1014, and the receivingmember 1002 may be secured to a wearable band (e.g., 910). The receivingmember 1002 includes a first and a second extension member 1008 a-b. The extension members 1008 a-b may extend away from and may be generally perpendicular to aplanar member 1003 of the receivingmember 1002. The extension members 1008 a-b may include receiving grooves 1012 a-b. The receiving grooves 1012 a-b each comprise a closed end 1010 a-b and an open end 1006 a-b. The receiving grooves 1012 a-b receive the protruding edges 1005 of thedevice 1014 through the open ends 1006 a-b of the receiving grooves 1012 a-b. The closed ends 1010 a-b prevent thedevice 1014 from passing entirely through the receiving grooves 1012 a-b. - The extension members 1008 a-b may optionally include curved regions 1009 a-b for receiving
mating portions 1011 of the clip-ondevice 1014. - The
clip dock 1000 may further include a hingedplate 1016 that is pivotally secured to theplanar member 1003 of the receivingmember 1002 using a pivoting hinge 1026. The pivoting hinge 1026 may include, for example, two receiving openings 1017 a-b on hinged plate extensions 1020 a-b extending from the hingedplate 1016, aspring 1021, and ahinge pin 1023, and a receivingmember protrusion 1025 that defines anenclosed channel 1027 for receiving thepin 1023. - A securing
protrusion 1030 may extend from the hingedplate 1016. The hingedplate 1016 may be positioned in an open and closed position relative to the receivingmember 1002 to enable securing theclip dock 1000 to awearable band 10 in the manner illustrated inFIGS. 5 a-e. - Mating edges 1001 a-b of the
device 1014 may be inserted into and retain within the receiving grooves 1012 a-b. The mating edges 1001 a-b could include, for example, aproximal edge 20 and adistal edge 24 of the clip-ondevice 14 illustrated inFIGS. 3 a-e. Accordingly, the mating edges 1001 a-b may comprise mating edges 1001 a-b of aplanar member 1015. The receiving grooves 1012 a-b may be positioned to slidably engage the mating edges 1001 a-b. - During insertion of the
device 1014 into the receiving grooves 1012 a-b, adetent 1047 is diverted from its default position, which is illustrated inFIG. 10 . Thedetent 1047 returns to its default position to retain thedevice 1014 within the grooves 1012 a-b after thedevice 1014 has been fully inserted into the receiving grooves 1012 a-b, as illustrated inFIG. 11 . Thedetent 1047 comprises a resilient member that is selectively movable out of its default position. In an alternate embodiment, a second detent (not shown) may be used in lieu of the closed ends 1010 a-b to prevent thedevice 1014 from passing entirely through the receiving grooves 1012 a-b. - The embodiment illustrated in
FIGS. 10-11 is merely illustrative. For example, in one embodiment, the clip-ondevice 1014 does not include a hinged plate, as illustrated inFIGS. 10-11 , or any other type of pivoting mechanism. In other words, the receivingmember 1002 may be adapted to mate with different types of clip-ondevices 1014, including those without a built-in securing mechanism. -
FIG. 12 illustrates one embodiment of aclip dock 1200. Theclip dock 1200 includes a receivingmember 1202 and a pivotingmember 1204. The receivingmember 1002 is configured to receive adevice 1014 in a manner similar to the clip dock 1000 (shown inFIG. 10-11 ). The receivingmember 1202 includes extension members 1208 a-b. The extension members 1208 a-b extend away from and are generally perpendicular to aplanar member 1203 of the receivingmember 1202. - The extension members 1208 a-b include receiving grooves 1212 a-b for receiving mating edges 1001 a-b of a device 1014 (illustrated in
FIG. 10 ). Each receiving groove 1212 a-b includes an open end 1206 a-b and a closed end 1210 a-b. The mating edges 1001 a-b of a device 1014 (shown inFIG. 10 ) may be inserted into the open ends 1206 a-b of the receiving grooves 1212 a-b. When fully inserted into the receiving grooves 1212 a-b, thedetent 1247, in its default position, serves to retain thedevice 1014 within the receivingmember 1202. - As illustrated in
FIG. 12 , the curved portions 1019 a-b ofFIG. 11 may be omitted from the extension members 1208 a-b. Thus, the extension members 1208 a-b include remote flat edges 1219 a-b. The remote flat edges 1219 a-b enable theclip dock 1200 to interface with devices with which the curved portions 1019 a-b would interfere during the insertion process. - The receiving
member 1202 is pivotally coupled to the pivotingmember 1204 via thepivoting hinge 1226. The pivotinghinge 1226 enables theclip dock 1200 to be moved into an open position or a closed position (which closed position is illustrated inFIG. 12 ). In the closed position, a securingprotrusion 1230 of the pivotingmember 1204 is positioned adjacent to or abuts aplanar member 1203 of the receivingmember 1202. In the open position, the securingprotrusion 1230 is situated in a position remote from theplanar member 1203 of the receivingmember 1202. -
