ROBERT FLOCKE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO R. NEWMAN & CO., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,904, dated March 5, 1878; application led January 28, 1878.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT FLocKE, of Newark, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Lock for Satchels, Carpet-Bags, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specilication and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I represents a front view; Fig. II, a longitudinal section; and Fig III, a horizontal section at line z z, Fig. II.
The nature of my invention consists in making the lock-case capable of sliding upon the base-plate, and provided with suitable openings for the catch or catches to pass into the case and lock on the same. This sliding lockcase is acted upon by a suitable spring, to keep the case locked on the catches. To the baseplate a suitable tumbler is attached, capable of being operated by a key, inthe usual manner, and so arranged that when said tuinbler is moved against a projection on the inside of the sliding look-case the saine is prevented from moving when the lock is locked.
A A' represent parts of the satchel-frame. B is the base-plate of the lock, attached to the frame A. To this plate B the bolt or lockingplate ais attached, capable of being operated, in the usual manner, by a key placed on the pin b, fast to the plate B. Upon this plate B the lock-case C is fastened by suitable pins o, so as to allow this ease C to move longitudinally on the same.
To the part A of the satchel-frame the staple-plate D is attached. It is provided with projecting tongues D', in the usual manner.
The case C has suitable openings for the tongues or staples D' to enter, and is acted upon by a spring, s, situated between the projection m, attached to the case C, and the projection n, attached to the plate B, in such a manner that as soon as the tongues D' have entered the oase C this spring s will move the case C, causing thereby the side wall of the case to enter the notch or cavity in the staples D', and thus hold it locked to the staples. The longitudinal motion of the case C from right to left upon the plate B will unfasten the case from the staples, when the satchel can be opened.
On the inside of the case C a projection, d, is arranged, against which the end of the locking-plate a can be moved, as shown in dotted lines, whereby the longitudinal sliding motion of the case C will be prevented, and the case be locked fast on the staples until the position of the locking-plate a is again changed by the application of the key, in the usual manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sliding case C, in combination with the plate B and suitable spring s, arranged to operate in combination with the staples D', substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
ROBERT FLOCKE.
