Each stopF'is of'H-shaped, construction and is swingable in a fore and aft direction and is automatically retained in each extreme position by means of a spring 21 attached to the stop and cooperating with the upper rack bar 23. Thus when the stops are in their forward positions they are inactive whereas when they are in their'rearward positions they are active. In order to swing the predetermined stops F outwardly or rearwardly to active positions, there is provided a tabular stop set key G which when depressed causes a pusher finger 28 to be moved rearwardly into engagement with the registering column stop F and thereby swing the latter rearwardly into active position. This tabular stop set key G is located in the keyboard at the right hand'end thereof and adjacent the tabulator key lever E. The key'G is fulcrumed on the cross shaft 20 and is held in its normal position against the stop 22 by a'spring 29. This lever includes a rearwardly and upwardly extending arm 30 to which is connected one end' of a pull link 3|, the other end of said link being connected to one arm of a bellcrank lever 32 fulcrumed as at 33 to' a lug 34 integral with the side wall of the main frame A. "The other arm of the bell crank lever 32 hasa loose connection with one end of a lever 35 which is pivoted intermediate its ends as at 36 tothe rear wall'5 of themain frame. The other end of the lever 35 is pivotally connected to the lower end of a thrust link 31, the upper end of ,said link being pivotally connected as at 38 to a forwardly extending arm 39 which is fixed to a hub 140,journaled on the shaft l4 mounted in the bracket C. Fixed to the hub 40 is the pusher finger 2B and therefore this finger together with the hub 40 and arm 39 constitute in effect a bell crank lever. Astop finger 4| is rigidly connected with the arm 39 and is adapted to cooperate with the front face of the 'rear wall 5 of the main frame a'sshownin Figure 5 to limit the forward movement of the pusher finger 28. A coil spring 42 is connected at one end to the arm 39 and atits other end to the machine frame A and functions to yieldably retain the pusher finger 28 in its normal position with the stop 4| engaging the rear wall of the main frame. Thus when the tabular stop set key G is depressed the bell crank lever.32 will be rocked and through the medium of the lever 35 the thrust link 31 will-beelevated and the pusher finger 28 will be swung rearwardly to' move the associated column stop F from an inactive to an active position, the springs 29 and 42 functioning to return the key G'and the associated parts to their normal position operator. g
A stop restoring device ,J is pivotally mounted on the upper end of the arm l3 of the bracket C and is normally held out of contact with the column stops F by a spring 7'. When it is desired to restore the active stops F to their inactive positions, the restoring device J is swung'forw'ardly to successively engage said stops when the carriage is moved in either direction and thereby swing said stops forwardly to their inactive positions.
Also mounted in the bracket C is a horizontal shaft 43 which is located in rear of the rear wall 5 of the main frame. Fulcrumed on this shaft 43 'is a hub 44 of a carriage stop finger H which extends upwardly to'a point in rear of the column stop frame which is formed bythe rack bars 23, 24. Rigidly connected with the hub 44 opposite the stop finger H is an upwardly extending arm 45' having a rearwardly extending ear 46 to which the upper end of a coil spring upon release of said key by rthe' 41 is connected, the lower end of said spring being connected to a pin 43 fixed to the bracket C. The carriage stop finger H terminates below the shaft 43 in a stop arm or finger 49 which is adapted to cooperate with the bracket C and therefore limit the rearward swinging movement of said finger, the spring 41 normally holding said finger H in its rearmost position. Integral with and extending upwardly from the extension l8 of the column tabulating stoplever D is a stop arm; 50 having a rearwardly extending ear 5| as 'shown particularly in Figures 3, 6 and 9.
1 An'adjustable link I connects the ear 5| with the upper end of the arm 45 whereby when the tabulating key lever E is depressed to release the rack bar 6 from the escapement pinion 8 the carriage stop finger H will be moved into position to be engaged by the column stop F which has been previously moved to its rearward or active position. This link I comprises two short links 52 and 53 which are connected for relative longitudinal adjustment. The front end of the link 52 is pivotally connected to the ear 5| by a pivot screw 54 and the link 53 is provided-at its rear end with anupstanding integral arm 55 which is pivoted at its upper end to the upper end of the. arm 45 by a pivot screw 56. Front and rear elongated openings 51, 58 are formed in the link 52. A clamping screw 59 passes through the front opening 51 and is engaged in a threaded opening in the rear endof the link 53. A guide pin 60 is rigidly secured to the link 53 at the rear end thereof and adjacent the lower portion of the arm 55 of said link. This guide pin 60 has sliding engagement in the opening 58 and functions to retain the links 52 and 53 against relative pivotal movement about the clamping screw 59. It will, therefore, be seen that I have provided a link connection between the column tabulating stop lever D'and the carrlage stop finger H, and that this link connection insures the stop finger H being moved to its operative position whenever thetabulating key lever E is depressed to release the caniage from its escapement mechanism.; 7 1 In another form of my invention, as shown in Figure 10, I have provided the hub 44 of the stop finger H with an upwardly extending rock arm 6| andto the upper end ofthis arm I have pivotally'connected as at 62 the rear end of an upwardly and rearwardly extendinglink 63, the lower front end of said beingpivotallyconnected as at 64 to the frame 6!; which supports the rack bar 3. [Thus when the tabulating key lever E is depressed the column tabulating stop lever D will be moved, the rack 8 will be disconnected from the escapement pinion 8, and by means of the link 63 the carriage stop finger H will be swung forwardly to its operating v position. It will therefore be seen that in this formof the invention, I have provided a positive thrust connection between the rack bar 6 and the carriage stop finger H.
Iclaim:- 1. In, a typewriting machine, the combination with a mainframe, of a carriage mounted thereon forletter space movements, an escapement mechanism for the carriage including a nonnal ly engaged pinion and rack bar, a lever pivoted onthe frame for disengaging the rack bar from the pinion, a margin stop bar fixed to the carriage, amargin stop on said bar, a plurality of movable column stops mounted on the carriage in rear of the margin stop bar, the column stops b i m e t t aw n er s. s p
lever pivotally mounted on the main frame between the margin stop bar and the column stops and normally disposed in the path of movement of the margin stop, a key for operating said stop lever, the rack bar disengaging lever being operated by the stop lever upon depression of the key to release the rack from the pinion, a single carriage stop finger located in rear of the column stops and pivotally mounted on the main frame and normally disposed out of the path of movement of said column stops, and a link directly connecting the carriage stop finger and the stop lever for moving said finger upon depression of said key into the path of the column stop. 7

a stop lever pivotally mounted on the main frame between the margin stopbar and the column stops and normally disposed in the path of movement of the margin stop, a key for operating said stop lever, the rack bar disengaging lever being operated by the stop lever upon depression of the key to release the rack from the pinion, a horizontal shaft mounted on the main frame, a single carriage stop finger fixed to said shaft and normally disposed out of the path of movement of 'the column stops, a rock arm fixed to said shaft, and a link directly connecting the rock arm and the stop lever for moving said finger upon depression of said key into the path of the column stop.
