I 2 Claims.
My invention relates to safety razors.
An important object of the invention is to providefasafety razor equipped with blade-sharpeningmeans which does not interfere with the u'se'of the razor in shaving.
A `further object of the invention is to provideblade-sharpening means carried by one element of 'a safety razor, in such a manner that .the sharpening means has a diagonal stroke during the sharpening operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety razor of the above-mentioned character, equipped with sharpening means constitutinga permanent part of the same without materially increasing the size, weight, or cost oi the article.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety razor of the above-mentioned character, which may be operated quickly and conveniently for sharpening the blade. l
Other objects and advantages ,of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this speciiication, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the bladeholding unit.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral i0 designates a cap, provided centrally thereof with a rearwardly projecting screw-threaded stud Ii, for screwthreaded engagement within a screw-threaded socket i2, carried by a'rod or stem I3. The cap is provided upon its rear inner side with lugs M for insertion within openings formed in a double edge blade I5, as shown. A clamp I6 has 2in-opening for the passage of the screwthreaded stud, and has openings or slots II, for receiving the lugs. When the socket l2 is screwed upon the stud, it engages the clamp I6, and the exible blade i5 is clamped to the cap it. The cap, clamp, rod and socket constitute a blade-holding unit.
The numeral Iii designates a guard, provided at its longitudinal edges with the usual combs 1933, Serial N0. 692,647
' I9, for co-action with the cutting edges of the blade. This guard is provided centrally with a longitudinal groove 20, adapted for snugly receiving the clamp I6. The guard I8 has a tubular handle 2l, rigidly secured thereto, and 5 Ythis tubular handle receives the rod and its socket. The rear end of the rod is screwthreaded for receiving a clamping nut 22, having screw-threaded engagement therewith.
As more clearly shown in Figure 4, the guard is provided with pairs oi sharpening or lhoning elements or surfaces 23. These sharpening or honing elements or surfaces are arranged upon opposite sides of the tubular handle 2| and extend longitudinally of the guard I8, terminating at the opposite ends of the same. These sharpening or honing elements or surfaces 23 may be formed of separate elements inserted within grooves 2Q, formed in the forward face of the guard i8, and held therein by any suitable means. These sharpening or honing elements or surfaces may be formed of glass, stone, composition, or hard metal, such as hard steel. Instead oi forming these honing elements or surfaces separate from the guard I8, and attaching the same thereto, they may be made integral with the guard, the entire guard being formed of hard metal, such as steel.
With the blade clamped in the holding unit, to sharpen the blade, the entire razor is inverted and the cap I0 placed in the palm of the hand, such as the left hand. The nut 22 is now suiciently unscrewed to permit of the upward movement of the guard I8 from the clamp i6, so that the walls of the groove 24 will clear the clamp. The tubular handle 2l being grasped in the right hand, the guard I8 may be oscillated, with the honing elements or surfaces 23 in engagement with the opposite edges of the blade. This rotary or oscillating movement of the guard causes the honing elements to have a diagonal stroke in engagement with the edges of the blade, which is important in properly sharpening the edges and straightening out bent portions of the same. Ii it is desired to sharpen the opposite side of the blade, the nut 22 is removed and the guard entirely separated from the rod. The socket I2 is now disconnected from the screw-threaded stud, whereby the clamp I6 may be removed. The blade is now separated from the cap and inverted, and again applied to the same, and held thereon by the clamp and associated elements. The guard is again applied to the cap iii, with the nut 22 adjusted to permit of the proper turning movement of the guard,
whereby the opposite surfaces of the edges of the blade may be properly sharpened. After the operation is completed, the nut 22 is screwed up and the guard clamped against the blade and cap. The safety razor is now ready for use in the kusual manner. The honing or sharpening elements or surfaces in no way interfere with the normal shaving use of the safety razor, nor d o they materially increase the weight or size of the device. The razor maybe Amanufactured with the honing or sharpening feature without materially increasing its cost of production. f Y
