te'r bia'd is projected beyond .sgr'fgmr ,m .Sleeve it en@ ifit A cutter Wiileiiggge withine wells there e eiiefte ivi its lower surface can be brought into engagement with theslveeve to hold it in a desired'position. The slot andV pin also serve to hold the collar from axial movement. A recessed `portion 28 is 'provided in the collar member Which registers with *Y the slot 2i, the recess extending over one-half the circumference of the collar so that it can bemoved to register exactly with the slotV 2 I. This will permit the lever 22 to be'moved 180 inthe slot and thus move the recessing cutter blade to anextreme position projected beyond the sur-V face of the casing AI9 or to a vposition in which the teeth of the cutterV are ush Vwith the surface of 'thecasing Vas shown in Figure 8.,
It will be further noted that the collar member V*24-isprovid'ed with a-seriesof graduations and thelarge Yend of the casing is provided with a projecting pin 29 with, which, thesergfraduations may be aligned so that'byyrotating the collar to align any given graduation with the .pin the recessed portion maybe caused to move out 'of full registry with thefslot V2I and thuslimit the extentto which thej lever may be: moved in this slot.. For instance, yas vshown in Figure 3, the lever` can only be moved one-half its normal amount becausethe collar has been moved to register its lowest graduation with the pin. If, however, the collar is rotated so as to cause the 5 graduation I lto register with pin 29 therecess will be broughtV into l' complete 'registry with the slot-2| to. permit maximum movement of the lever. Inthis way, thecollar and slot arrangementA provides means for gauging the depth of a recess rto becut since the operator may, by setting the collar, move the cutter Aeccentrically of the casing` to a desired extent.
Mounted on the casing or sleeve bush I9 is a sleevel 30 which may bel termed a locating member. This sleeve is designed for axial movement on the casing ISandrterminates adjacent toone end thereof. Y The sleeve is of a diameter considerably greater than the casing I9 so that when .the casing is insertedwithin the tube the end of the sleeve or locating member 36 may abutthe endof the tube to stop further movement of the casing into the tubes On the opposite end of thesleeve is mounted aspring clip 3l which carries a pin 32 havinga knurled operating4 piece 33.
" This pin isn designed to project through an orice in the sleeve 3U, as shown in Figure 2, and between the clip and thesleeve is provided a cam member V34 which isformed withv a curved lower surface `to snugly fit against the side of the sleeve. e The cam member is rigidly secured to the pin 32 so that it will rotate therewithv and'if it is given a Vturn of 90 the curved lower surface which forms .acam member during turning of the pin will loe-moved outof engagement'with the sleeve so thatV the Yends 35 of the cam member` (seeV ment with one another, the recesses beingiofla size to receive the pin 32. These recesses are disvure 1, the pin 32 is in a position registering with a recess V36 corresponding to the marking 3l. In thisy way the 'recesses 36 may be located to permit insertion of the'pin 32 thereinand it is only'necessary to rotate the pin one quarter turn v'to cause the. curved surface of the cam member 35 to again lie flush with the outer surface of ,theY sleeve, thus lowering the pin into the recess 36. Consequently, the recess in the end 'of the sleeve and the markings or recesses 3l constitute means for locating the pin and the recesses 36,"the recesses 36 locating the cutter blade in the tube since they vposition the sleeve 36 axially on -the casing I9 so that the ends of this' casing andthecutter project from the sleeve 33 Ato a greater or4 lesser extent.
In order to provide a guide and steadying mem-` .ber for the tool, a bracket or the like 39 is secured to the outer sleeve.30 and is provided with a channel 40 to receive the guide rod 4I which may be projected into an adjacent tube to that being recessed, and thus it will serve as aguide and steadying member for the tool when operating upon an adjacent tube. The outer casing and assembled parts of the tool are attached to the motor by means of a collar member 42 which is provided with a knurled surface for gripping purposes. cured by lmeans of a threaded bushing or the like 133 which is provided with Va iianged head as shown toVV abut a shoulder cut on the inside of the collar 42. VBetween the outer surface of The collar is sethis bushing and the collar in a recess formed .A
in the latter, a lock spring 44 is positioned in vthis recess and permits smooth rotational movement in a clockwise direction to screw the collar onto the screw threaded end 45 of the casing, but providessubstantial resistance to rotation in an anti-clockwise direction, thereby avoiding the possibility of this becoming loosened through vibration. When the motor is tted to the collar, the socket 46 in the driving spindle will engage theend I5 of the shaft VIll so that upon setting the motor in motionfthe shaft and carried cutter will be rotated. y y I l In one vof its Aapplications the device may be used vfor vinstance to remove copper tube beads,
such as shown at 41 .(Fig. 2) from the grooves of feedwater heated tube sheet holes when removing old copper tube for renewal purposes. Among other uses Yit may be applied to internally cut out tubes that have been expanded from the inside bore in such a manner that the outer wall of said tube isstretched or pressed into grooves in solid walls.v In fact its application is wide in the field of recessing and cutting.
In operation, assuming that it is desired to cut out the beads 47 kin the tubeas shown in Figure 2, the' cutter being y in the position illustrated in Figure lor 2which is concentric withthe outer casing 179, is inserted into the tube the distance the beads'are formed from the endof the tube. The loeatingxmember `or Vsleeve 30 Vmay be rst `adjusted through the pin 32 and the recesses 36 so Y Y 2,000,824 that when the outer end of the casing is inserted in the tube, the cutter will be positioned .in its proper place through the abutmentV of the end of the locating member with the tube sheet wall. According to the depth of the bead, the gauge collar 2l may be set so that its recess may be moved relatively to the slot 2| so that the collar will restrict the length of the slot 2| in the enlarged portion 20 of the casing I9 so that the lever 22 may be moved the appropriate distance to rotate-the sleeve bush i6, whereby the cutter is projected eccentrically to the required (extent. The gauge for setting the degree of eccentricity of the cutter as noted Vreads from l5to`10 representing .050 'inch to .0100 inch so that the cutter may be moved with accuracy to avery minute degree.`
When adjustment has been made, the motor'is set in operation and the cutter, rotated through theV shaft I0, will cut the required recesses, whereupon the severed parts may be removed in a practical known manner.
It is apparent fromthe foregoing that the tool I have produced is very` simple and practical and that it will provide for accuracy in operation, being compactin form and readily manipulated.
Various modifications may be made Vin this in- Y vention without departing from the spirit there- Aof or the scope of the claims, and therefore the exact forms shown are to be taken as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense, and it is desired that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are disclosed in the prior art or are set forth in the accompanying claims.
