5Claims.
The invention relates to packages and method and apparatus for making the same.
One object of the invention is to provide a package which may be made from a suitably scored and cut blank and be filled during its formation. Ordinarily, paper or cardboard boxes are made of two telescoping sections and each oi these sections are separately formed from a blank, and it is quite customary to store these boxes in made up form. Packages made in accordance with the present invention have the advantage of a considerable saving in material over the telescoping type; there is also a saving in time of making them; there is only the storage space necessary for the flat blanks and these blanks may be readily made to produce boxes of diiierent depths. a A further object of the invention is to provide a package or box of very simple construction in which the cover is formed as a part of the blank and is adapted at its free end to rest upon a reinforced ledge formed by parts of the blank.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple form of apparatus for use with the method hereinafter described.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

Referring to the drawings, the blank 3 may be formed of any suitable paper stock and as formed has the score lines ill and the score lines ii, i 2, l3, and i4, those parts of said last named lines extending beyond the score lines l0 being cut so as to provide sets of flaps l5, l6, l1, l8, and IS, the score lines also providing for the bottom panel 20, side panels 2|, cover 22 and cover ledge 23. mm this form of blank the depth of the box may be varied by varying the width of the side panels 2|.
With the blank so formed the sides 2| are bent up at right angles to the bottom 20 and the flaps l8 and ii at these sides are turned inwardly while the flaps i1 are turned upwardly, the ledge 23 turned inwardly and the ledge flaps It! turned down as shown in Fig. 5. After the package is filled the cover 22 with its side flaps I5 is bent down and with its front end abutting'the ledge 23 it is sealed closed in any suitable manner as by adhesive or sealing tape 24 applied along the edge of the box as shown in Fig. 6 and the side flaps i5 are secured to the container by the sealing tape 25 which connects these flaps with the flaps i1, it being noted that on the shallower boxes the flaps l1 and I5 may overlap and be sealed in overlapped condition and that where each flap is. equal to the height of the box the flaps i1 may be placed on the inside or outside of the container with reference to the side flaps i6 and I8.
To facilitate the expeditious formation and filling of the containers or packages as above de-- scribed, we have provided a simple apparatus for use in the shaping of the blank into a package and the holding of the parts of the blank in position so that the package may be filled and sealed.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, the numeral 26 designates a table having legs 21 and a rectangular opening 28 formed therein with sides 29 depending from the sides of said opening to form a pocket 30. The edges 28' of the opening are rounded to assist in the turning up of the panel sections.
A plunger 3| reciprocates loosely in the pocket 30 and is carried by a rod 32 slidably mounted in a bracket 33 and normally urged to its upper position by a spring 34 and adapted to be held in lowered position by a spring pres d locking pin 35 slidably mounted in said bracis et 33 and engageable in a recess 36 in said rod. The pin 35 is controlled by the bell-crank lever 36, pivoted on the bracket and having a pin and slot connection 38 with said pin, and a treadle extension 39, said lever being normally urged to press said pin inwardly by a flat spring 40 anchored to the bracket and engaging the treadle extension 39.
A hollow forming-plunger 4| is swingably mounted on a rod 42 carried on the arms 43 of a swingable yoke 44 which is pivoted at 45 on a standard 46 mounted on the table 26. The plunger 4| and yoke 44 are counterbalanced by a weight 41 connected by a cable 48 with the rod 32, said cable passing over the pulley 49 on the standard 46.
As an aid in bending parts of the box the rest members 50 may be mounted at opposite sides of the opening 28. These members 50 are shown in Figs. 3 and 4 as pivoted on pivots 5i disposed below the table top and each is normally urged ,to a position projecting above the table 'by a spring 52 connected to the table and to a crank arm 58 on the member 58. When not in use the rests are held in a collapsed position by latches 58. Each latch 54 is in the form of a slidable pin mounted in the table and normally urged by a spring 55 into locking engagement with the sidesof the hole 56 in the member 58, said pin being manually retractible by engaging the thrust pin 51 secured thereto and working in the slot 51'.
It is to be noted and especially from Figs. 2 and 4 that each rest member 50 has L-shaped end sections 58 connected by a transverse bar portion 59 and that these end sections 58 are spaced apart the length of the flap I! so that when the blank is first laid down the flap I'I lays in the pocket 68 formed by the end section 58 and bar 59 while each flap l6 or N is in a position to be engaged by the inclined side ii of the end section when the blank 8 is laid out on the table asshown in Fig. 2, so that the bottom panel 20 alines with the opening 28. Then the operator grasping the yoke 44 presses it downwardly, and in doing so brings the plunger ll against the bottom panel of the box and thencontinuing to press pushes the blank in the pocket 310 and against the resistance of the spring pressed plunger 3| which is pushed downwardly until it reaches its latched position shown in Fig. 1. Under these conditions the panels ill have been bent up and theflaps I6 and I8 turned in with the flaps l1 turned up on the outside of said flaps l6 and I8. The plunger 8i may then be withdrawn, the package filled with merchandise, laundry or other material and the ledge 23 turned in with the flaps i9 turned inwardly and downwardly as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and '7. Then the cover 22 may be folded over to its closed position and sealed with the sealing tape 24, and then on the operator's releasing the pin 35 on the downward movement of the treadle 38, the spring 34 acts to raise the plunger 3| with the loaded package or box thereon to a position above the pocket and then the tapes 25 may be applied, to the flaps l5 and IS. The rests 50, when not in use, may be turned down so as to be flush with the top of the table 28 and be secured by the latches 54. It is to be noted that in a narrower box the flap It might extend over the entire area of the end in which case the tape 25 might then secure said flap to the cover 22 and the flap l5 be tucked on the inside.
It is also to be noted that the ledge 23 and the corner flaps I! greatly strengthen the box in construction but especially for the taping of cover 22 to side 2|, said box being a one piece blank and readily assembled into packaging and finished form.
We desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far :as'such limitations are included in the claims.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. A method or packaging which comprises taking a blank scored to provide bottom, sides, and a cover panel and flaps on said panel and pushing the blank into a pocket of about the area or the bottom panel thereby turning the side panels and bottom end flaps up and side flaps of side panels inwardly to form a material receiving container, filling the container while in said pocket and then sealing the cover panel at its free edge and at its sides in a closed position to the walls of the filled container while in said pocket- 2. In an apparatus for forming containers, the combination of a table having an opening to provide a depending pocket of substantially the base area of the container to be formed, a plunger adapted to engage the base panel of a container blank to push it into said pocket, the sides of the table adjacent said pocket being formed to assist the turning in 01' sections of the blank to form a container body as the blank is pushed into said pocket, means for supporting the folded blank in said pocket for filling and means under the control of the operator for causing said supporting means to eject a loaded container from said pocket.
3. In an apparatus for forming containers, the combination of a table having an opening provided with a depending pocket of substantially the base area of the container to be formed, a plunger adapted to engage the base panel of a container blank to push it into said pocket, said blank having sides and end sections, the sides of the table adjacent said pocket being formed to assist in" turning up the ends of the blank directly attached to the base and the turning in of the end sections of the blank attached to the sides thereof as the blank is pushed into said pocket, means for supporting the folded blank in said pocket for filling and means under the control of the operator for causing said supporting means to elect a loaded container from said pocket.
4. In an apparatus for forming containers, the
combination of a table having an opening provided with a depending pocket of substantially the base area of the container to be formed, a plunger adapted to engage the base panel of a container blank to push it into said pocket, said blank having sides and end sections, inclined panel section guide members pivotally mounted on said table at opposite ends of said opening to assist in turning up the ends of the blank directly attached to the base and in turningthe end sections oi the blank attached to the sides thereof as the blank is pushed into said pocket, means underthe control of the operator for ejecting a loaded container from said pocket, and means for holding said guide members in an inoperative position.
5. In an apparatus for forming containers the combination of a table having an opening whose sides are formed to provide a pocket of substantially the base area of the container to be formed, a plunger adapted to engage the base panel of a container blank to push it into said pocket, said blank having sides and end sections, the sides of the table adjacent said pocket being formed to assist in turning up the ends of the blank directly attached to the base and the turning in of the end sections of the blank attached to the sides thereof as the blank is pushed into said pocket, a spring pressed ejector plunger engaging the bottom of container blank, a spring pressed latch to engage said ejector plunger when in its outermost position, and means controlled by the operator for releasing said latch.
