Description
HATFIELD & GOLDSMITH Churn.
Patented July 13, 1858.
iIf!IIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIlllflllfl N. PETERS Phnlolimu n h lhin mn. n. C.
UNITED srarns rarer orrro J. HATFIELD, OF FALMOUTH, INDIANA, AND H. M. GOLDSMITH, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent. No. 20,878, dated July 13, 1858.
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Jimrns HATFIELD, of F almouth, in the county of Fayette, in the State of Indiana, and HENRY M. GOLD- SMITH, of Burlington, Des Moines county, in the State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Churns; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which A, A Figure 1st is a basin formed in the top of the lid; by sinking the cover B, B in Fig. 3 in the vessel, and connecting it to the rim or hoop which forms part of the lid as shown in C, C, Fig. 8.
D, Fig. 2 is an air chamber, or aperture in which the shaft of the agitator revolves; a section of which is shown in Fig. 5.
E, Figs. 1 and 5 is a glass slide or covering to the air chamber. F, F, are brakes or stops on the under side of the lid.
Gr, Figs. 3 and 4 is a hoop or belt made to fit the bottom of the churn to which are attached the brakes or stops H as seen in Fig. 4.
I, Fig. 3 shaft of the agitator, running obliquely from one side of the bottom of the vessel to an opposite side in\the top, it is made in a triangular form with three equal sides.
K, K are half circular wings or dashes, one on each side of the shaft, set diagonally across its center on an angle of about degrees.
L, L, are quarter circle wingsthree on each end of the shaft set on a reverse angle to the half circle wings, with one end of each fastened to the shaft, inclining from thence toward the center and the other end attached to the half circle wings, thereby making both more permanent and durable.
The vessel may be made of any convenient size or form a round or cylinder form being preferable largest at the top.
The nature of this improvement is such that while we have a double acting compound agitator at the same time the adjustable brakes at the bottom form a powerful reaction of the cream thus expediting the process of butter making. The adjustable belt and brakes are easily taken out and washed leaving but the smooth surface of the vessel to clean, thus enhancing it on account of its cleanliness.
The basin or reservoir lid is so arranged as to contain either hot or cold water which being circulated through the cream by the action of the agitator and brakes soon re duces the cream to the desired temperature.
The quarter circle wings or dashers are so arranged that while they impart strength to the agitator, they also act as auxiliaries in the churning, and also in assisting to gather the butter after it has collected in particles. The covering or slide of glass upon the top of the air chamber is directly over the agitator making it no longer needful to raise the lid to see how the operation is progressing, this slide admitting sufficient light to see when the process of butter making is ended What we claim as our improvement and for which we desire to secure Letters Patent is l. The basin or reservoir lid having a glass slide attachment as set forth.
2. We also claim the agitator having wings L, L as specified and used in connection with the brakes G, H as set forth.
JAMES HATFIELD. H. M. GOLDSMITH.
