Conn, assignor Middletown,
Application May 23, 1936, Serial No. 81,423
3 Ciaims.
My invention relates to the class of' devices employed for cutting hair, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this type that may be held in a manner similar to that for holding shears in the operation of cutting hair; and a further object of the invention is to provide a device of this class that may be readily constructed and that shall be particularly efficient in its method of operation.
One form of a hair clipper embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hair clipper.
Figure 2 is a view in lengthwise central section through the same- Figure 3 is a view in cross section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in lengthwise section through the handle illustrating the methd of securing the stationary blade to the handle.
Figure 5 is an inside view of the detachable handle section.
Figure 6 is a detail view in cross section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 6-5 of Figure 4.
Figure '7 is a detail view in cross section illustrating the connection for the coupling plug.
While my invention is not limited in its use for cutting or clipping hair of any particular nature, yet, I have in mind its adaptability for cutting hair on the human head, my invention as embodied in such a device being shown in the drawing herein. It will be obvious however, that the clippers may be used for shearing wool or other substances in the nature of hair or wool without departing from the spirit and intent of the invention.
The device as described herein comprises a handle which is preferably formed in two sections with a blade support secured thereto and a blade reciprocally mounted in said support, means being provided in the handle for impartr ing reciprocating movement to the blade. The
numeral 1 denotes the main section of the handle including a semi-cylindrical portion 8 comprising a body part and with a Web 9 protruding therefrom on one side, this web terminating in a ring or loop ID with a finger rest II in a manner common to shear construction. The body part 8 comprises substantially half of the handle as a whole and it has a recess l2 with bridges l3 extending thereacross, said bridges constituting a portionof the bearings for a driver to be Jhereinafter described.
The secondary handle section is similar :in form to that just described and comprises a body part i l with a recess I5, bridges It and a loop or ring H. A blade support it is upturned at one edge to form a supporting lip l9 creating one side of a blade groove 20. This blade support is tapered from the handle to the point, somewhat to resemble shear blades when closed together. It has a tang which is secured to the main handle section 1' within an opening into the end thereof. Screws may be used for securing the blade support in place if desired, or any other suitable fastening means may be employed. The front edge of the blade support is formed with teeth 22 that may be sharpened to provide cutting edges.
A blade 23 is located in the groove within the lip 19 for reciprocating movement therein, this blade having guide slots 26 through which screws 25 extend, said screws also passing through the supporting lip 19. A lubricating groove 28 is also formed in the blade for the purpose of receiving a lubricant of a more or less thick character. The front edge of the blade is provided with teeth 21 which are spaced apart substantially the same distance as are the teeth 22 on the stationary blade section and which may be sharpened to cooperate with said last mentioned teeth.
As a means for reciprocating the blade 23 I provide a cam 28 which is located in the end of a driver 29 rotatably mounted in bearings in the bridges l3 and Hi. In the construction as shown herein the cam 28 engages in a groove in the edge of the tang 2i at the inner end of the reciprocating blade, and a finger 313 on the tang projects into a cam groove 3| comprising a part of the cam, and as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The end of the driver comprising a shaft 32 is suitably formed to receive a coupling as from a flexible shaft driven by a motor of any suitable character, as herein shown the shaft having a hole in its end with a slot opening out of one side of the hole to receive a plug 33 with a spline 34 integrally formed thereon, the plug being located at the end of the flexible shaft and driven thereby, and when inserted in the socket in the shaft 32 operates to rotate the cam 28 and thereby to impart reciprocating movement to the blade 23.
The tool as illustrated herein is of particular advantage in cutting hair on the human head, as it may be held by one hand in the same manner as are a pair of shears and the comb tionary blade secured to 1. hair clippershaped'to resemble a of shears when the blades thereof are closed to}- gether, said clipper comprising a handle, a stablade associated with the stationary blade: for
reciprocating action, the stationary blade 'being' vU-shaped in cross section with side walls and" a bottom' wall inclosing'and retaining the movable blade, the saidbottom wallada'pt'ed to 8.01 commodate the sliding action of the movable blade, cutting teeth on adjacent edges of the and of the stationary blade, a
movable blade rotatable grooved cam mounted in the handle, and a tang carried by the inner end of the movable blade, having a:finger operatively extending intothe groove in thecam for effecting reciprocation of the movable blade upon'rotation of V the cam. a t 2. The operation of the i "a reduced neck portion in another bridge piece wthe neck engaging oppositefaces of the bridge the handle, a movable having a finger operatively extending into the groove in ther cam for effecting reciprocation of the mo vable blade upon rotation. of the cam, said handle carrying internal bridge pieces, a drive shaft carried by one end of the cam and journalled in a bearing in a bridgerpiece and with the shoulders 01' piece for restraining longitudinally shifting movements of the cam relative to the handle.-

A hair clipper shapedto resemble a pair 01 shears when the blades thereof are closed together, said clipper comprisinga handle, a stationary blade secured to the handle, a movable blade'associated with the stationary blade for reciprocating' action, the stationary blade being cu-shaped in' cross section with side wallsand a bottom wall inclosing and retaining the movable blade, thesaid bottom ,wall adapted to accommodate the sliding action of the movable blade, cutting teeth 'on adjacent edges of the movable blade and of the stationary blade, 2.
