This is important as it is well known that such bags are purchased primarily for their appearance I rather than any particular utility they may possess.

An object of my invention is to provide a lady's handbag having a hookless fastener closure and in which' the continued operation of the slide fastener will not wear out or stain the portions of the bag lying in planes above the fastener member.

A further object is to provide a bag of the character described having a novel upper edge formation.

5 A further object is to provide a novel method a pair of wear and stain resisting rolls formed along the upper edges of thesides of the outer covering l0 above the fastener. The lining of the bag is designated by ll. The outer covering ill of the handbag may be of any suitable material and may assume any desired shape or form. The outer covering III is provided with substantially straight upper edge portions Illa. The rolls II are formed of strips of material which is preferably of the same material .as that comprising the cover I0 and in the form illustrated have a length substantially equivalent to the length of the upper edge portion Illa of the cover Ill. The strips forming the rolls II have side edges Ila and lib, and it will be noted that the edges Ila when in the finished position are turned inwardly upon themselves (see Figure 2) and are stitched by lines of stitching I2 to the upper edge portions Illa of the bag cover Ill. The edges lib of the rolls II are then brought handbag. In forming the above described bag the procedure is best illustrated by Figures 3 and 4. As shown-in Figure 3 the bag cover II is turned inside out and its upper edges Ila are stitched to the edges Ila of the roll forming strips H by rows of stitching l2. The roll forming strips are then thrown over the seams thus formed to the positions shown by broken lines in Figure 3. The lining I4 is turned inside outand the bag cover l0, still inside out, is placed therein (Figure 4). Then the hemmed edges I! of the lining ll are brought into juxta-position with the edges D of the rolls ll after first inserting a side edge of each of a pair of hooklessfastener strips I! therebetween. The edges of the fastener strips IS, the edges l5 of the lining and llb of the roll forming strips are then all secured together by lines of stitching IS. The lining I4 and bag cover "I are then reversed to place the cover II on the outside. A tag I! may be stitched to the extended free ends of the hookless fastener strips I3 to close them. By extending one pair of ends of the fastener strips beyond the ends of the bag side, a wider opening of the bag is possible. However, this feature may be eliminated where a particularly wide opening is unnecessary.

If desirable, two or more rolls may be formed along the upper edges of the bag covering by following out the hereinabove teachings.

, From the above it is apparent that the portio of the inner surfaces of the bag sides lying above the fastener are formed of durable yet finished material which will resist staining and wear and materially enhance the longevity of the bags appearance and life.

While I have shown and described what is now thought to be a preferred embodiment of and method of making the device of the invention, nevertheless, it is readily apparent that the same is susceptible to other forms and methods of manufacture.

Consequently, it is not my intention to limit myself to the form and method shown except as hereinafter claimed.
