Description

mh 1937.. DAWSON LOOSE LEAF BI NDER Filed Dec. 24, 1934 Patented Mar. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOOSE LEAF BINDER Application December 24, 1934, Serial No. 758,901
1 Claim.
The invention relates to loose leaf binders of the toggle arch type. Its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive binder especially for note book service; and it consists in a structure such 5 as hereinafter described, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the binder when open, some parts being broken away; and
Fig. 2 is a detail of an end portion of the metal. The cover ll] of the binder is formed of a single uninterrupted sheet of flexible material, such as leather or the like.
The metal comprises a pair of rods H, having their ends formed into sections of sheet-holding rings and being offset laterally, as at l2, I3, to
form toggle joints l4, and a spring plate l5, having downturned margins I6 for clamping the body portions of the rods II. The plate I5 is apertured, as shown at H, to accommodate the upstanding end portions l8 of the rods, which constitute the sheet-holding elements and mate together to form arches.
The length of the body P tion of the plate I5 is slightly less than the width of the sheet Ill. The central portion of the plate I5 is prolonged at each end beyond the body portion, and is bent downwardly to close the end of the body portion, as shown at l9,this portion extending downwardly approximately to the line of the margins 16 of the plate and then bent forwardly, as a tongue 20, which is folded backwardly, as shown at 2 l to inclose the margins of the cover in.
The upper part of the downturned portion l9 5 of the plate slopes backwardly to permit the fiexing of the body portion of the plate l5, while having the efiect of somewhat stiffening that portion and thus permitting the use of lighter stock. The inner part 20 of the forwardly projecting tongue 10 is transversely concave, as shown, and the backwardly turned portion 2| is correspondingly bent.
The metal having been fitted to the cover by having the margins of the cover inserted between the parts 20 and 2|, the latter are clinched to- 15 gether by pressure, and, if desired, may be indented by the use of a suitable tool to bite into the material of the cover.
I claim as my invention A loose leaf binder comprising a cover formed 20 of an uninterrupted sheet of flexible material,
a transversely arched spring plate, openable sheet-holding prongs in toggle engaged sets carried by the arched plate, such plate having its end portions extended beyond the arched portion 25 and ofiset downwardly and folded backwardly to detachably engage the cover.
