3 Claims.
The invention relates to door hinges, and particularly to a hinge for the door of a cooking stove or range.
The primary object of the invention is to pro- 5 vide a hinge of this character in which bolts,
rivets and other like securing means are eliminated, whereby a door may be hung or removed Without the danger of cracking enameled faces thereof or of a door frame which commonly .10 attends the application and removal of such securing means to and from enameled members.
A further object is to provide a hinge of this character which is completely hidden from view when the door is closed.
:15 A further object is to provide a hinge of this character which may be assembled and disassembled for the hanging and removal of a door without the use of tools.
A further object is to provide a door hinge so 20 located and constructed that the door may form the corner member of a door mounting element.
A further object is to provide a device of this character wherein one end of a door is pivoted on a fixed member and the other end of the 25 door is pivoted on a movable member which is locked in operative position by means carried by the door.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the combination and ar- 30 'rangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing 35 from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove whose doors are hung on my improved hinges.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the door frame 40 member of the stove.
Figure 3 is a rear perspective view of the door.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3 and illustrating the hinge construction.
45 Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the door and hinge.
Figure 6 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of a stile of the door frame taken on line 66 of Figure 2.
50 Referring to the drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral l designates a stove comprising a top H, a base l2, a side panel [3, and a front panel 14 which includes door frames IS. The door 5 frames l5, as best illustrated in Figure 2 comprise upper and lower rails l6 which lie flush with front panel [4, each of which rails l6 carries an inwardly directed horizontal flange IT. The stiles l8 of the door frame are rearwardly offset from rails l6, and one thereof, as illustrated 5 in Figure 6, is provided with a rearwardly curved or concave portion I9 adjacent its outer edge and extending longitudinally thereof. A vertical rearwardly directed flange 20 is carried by the door frame at one side thereof to lie flush with the 10 side panel l3 of the stove. An upwardly extending stud 2i is fixedly carried by the lower horizontal flange ll of the frame in forwardly spaced relation to the curved portion IQ of stile [8 of said frame, and spaced from the end of and the front edge of said flange ll. In axial alignment with said stud 2|, a bearing aperture is formed in the upper horizontal flange l1.
In the application or hanging of the door in the door frame, the boss 25 is mounted on the stud 2| in operative relation thereto, and a. pin 29 is then passed upwardly through the bore in the boss 26 and through the aperture in the upper flange of the door frame which is aligned with stud 2!. The stud 2i and pin 29 thus form aligned hinge pintles about which the door may pivot. At its lower end, the pin 29 carries a perpendicularly extending portion 30, and this portion is positioned parallel to the door and inserted between the arm 28 of support 21 and the door to be positioned and supported in operative relation by said support. To remove the door, the pin 29 is raised until the portion 33 thereof clears the upper end of arm 28 of support 27, whereupon the pin is turned to space portion 38 thereof from said support 27 and is then lowered for removal from the registering apertures in the door frame flange i1 and boss 26. The door may then be lifted 01f of stud 2i and out of the door frame.
In the case of the door 3| of the stove which pivots about its lower horizontal end, the same hinge arrangement may be employed, the position of the pivot stud and pin and the openings or bearings for the reception thereof merely being changed from the vertical to the horizontal to provide a horizontal pivot axis.
It will be seen that, in the use of this construction, the pin 29 is the only movable element of the structure, and that bolts and other securing means are entirely eliminated. Thus, in the mounting of the door and in its removal, the entire operation, insofar as it concerns the application or removal of parts, is done from the: rear side of the door; and consequently all possibility of damaging enameled faces of the door or its frame is entirely eliminated. Furthermore, the
operation can be performed without the use of' tools, since the pin29 can be raised and lowered by the fingers. The hiding of the hinge by mounting it at the rear of the door, and the elimination of conventional hinge plates, opens a new field of designs which may be applied to the stove, such as those resulting from elimination of the usual flush stile of a door frame conventionally required for the mounting of hinge plates, and the formation of the corner of the stove by the door itself. I
The curved portion l9 of stile l8 of the door frame accommodates the movement of door flange 23 in the opening and closing of the door. The positioning of the supporting socket or member 21 in laterally spaced relation to the pivot portion or pivot axis of the pin 29 permits easy removal of said pin from the door and frame apertures in which it is normally mounted, while at the same time being effective for its normal function of supporting and locking the pin 29 in said door and frame apertures.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:-
1. In a hinge construction for range doors, a door frame having an inner rearwardly extending off-set whose upper wall is provided with a vertical aperture, a vertical hinge pin aligned with said aperture and carried by the lower wall of said off-set, a door mounted in said off-set, upper and lower bosses carried by the inner side of said door and each having a vertical aperture, said hinge pin fitting into the aperture of said lower boss, a second hinge pin fitting into the aperture of said upper boss and said frame aper ture, an angularly extending arm carried by the lower end of said second pin, a bracket carried by the inner side of said door spaced laterally of the pivot axis of said door and below said upper boss for supporting said arm, and an upwardly extending finger carried by said bracket in spaced relation to said door for retaining said arm substantially parallel to and adjacent said door, said second pin being upwardly shiftable to release said arm from said bracket and finger whereby said arm may be rotated angularly of said door for movement spaced from said bracket upon subsequent downward withdrawal of said second pin from its receiving apertures.
2. The combination with a door frame having a door opening, a door adapted to close said opening, a pivotal connection between said door and the lower part of said frame having a vertical axis, of means for pivoting said door to the upper part of said frame comprising a hinge pin, a boss carried by said door, said boss and the adjacent frame part having aligned vertical apertures for receiving said pin, a member projecting laterally from the lower end of said pin, a support for said projecting member secured to said door below said boss and laterally of said pin including a retainer spaced from said door for retaining said projecting member adjacent the face of said door, said pin being upwardly shiftable to a position above said retainer whereby said projecting member may be swung away from said door for movement spaced from said bracket upon downward withdrawal of said pin from its receiving apertures.
3. A stove cabinet comprising a side panel, a front panel including a door frame positioned at one end thereof, a vertical flange projecting rearwardly from the outer side of said frame and flush with said side panel to provide a cabinet corner, said frame having a rearwardly off-set portion interrupting said corner to provide a recess, said off-set having a door opening therein, a door mounted in said recess flush with said frame, an outer vertical rearwardly extending flange carried by said door and flush with said frame flange to normally complement said interrupted cabinet corner, and means for pivoting said door in said frame.
