l PORTABLE DRAFTSMANS CASE Filed Sept. 17, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor I Bymwzm Harney Patented Jan. 12, 1937 UI'TED STTES ottici:
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to a. case for a draftsman whereby he may conveniently carry about all necessary materials including a drawing board and providing means whereby the drawing board may be supported at different angles and horizontal and may be rotated into different positions.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a case of this nature which may be easily and readily clamped on any suitable support such as a table or the like.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a case of this nature which is simple in its construction, compact and convenient in its arrangement of parts, easy to manipulate, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, thoroughly efficient in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in View as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case showing the same in an open position with the drawing board removed and with a portion of the side of the lower section broken away to illustrate one of the clamps.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal central section through the case showing the same in open position.
Figure 3 is a similar View showing the same in closed position.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that there is provided a case comprising a bottom section 5 and an upper section 6 hingedly connected as at l, 'l and B, the hinge 8 being located between the hinges l. These hinges are connected to adjacent ends of the sections 5 and 6. The hinge 8 is provided with an opening 9 through which extends the rack portion I of a bar il and a spring l anchored on the bottom of the section 5 as at i6 impinges against the rack portion Ill of the bar l I to engage the teeth thereof with the upper edge of the opening of the spring 8 for holding the section 6 in different adjusted angular positions or closed position with respect to the section 5 as will be hereinafter more apparent. A lug i8 arises from the bottom of the section 5 and has pivoted thereto a pair of links I9 which are pivoted as at 20 to a pair of links 2| which in turn are pivoted as at 22 to the grooved lug 23 having a central rib separating the groove.
This lug 23 is secured to the top of the section 6. The bar ll is pivoted between intermediate portions of the links 2l as indicated at 24. It will readily be seen that by adjusting the bar Il the section 6 may be held in diierent adjusted positions as exemplified for example in Figures l and 2 or may be held in closed position as illustrated in Figure 3. The section 5 is provided with a plurality of compartments 28 extending longitudinally thereof and a transverse compartment 29 for holding various draftsmans implements. The side compartments 28 are provided at the hinged end of the sections with compartments 3E! open at the bottom and pivotally mounted therein are clamps 3| as indicated at 32 which may be held encased in the compartments 36 by clips 33 when not in use. These clamps are adapted to be swung down to the position shown in Figures l and 2 so as to engage under a table or like support for securely clamping the case in position thereon.
Numeral 35 denotes a drawing board swivelly mounted as at 36 on the top of the section 6 eX- teriorly thereof so that it may be swung to various angular positions. On the top of the section 6 are mounted friction projections 3l to engage under the board for steadying the same in its different adjusted positions.
It is thought that the construction, manipulation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplication since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement oi parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacricing any of its advantages.
What is claimed is:-
1. A case of the class described comprising a pair of sections hingedly connected at adjacent ends, a drawing board on the upper section, means for swivelly mounting the drawing board on said upper section, and means for holding -said upper section in diierent angular adjusted positions with respect to the lower section or closed thereover, said means including a link pivotally connected with the lower section, a link pivotally connected with the upper section, said links being pivotally connected together, a bar pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of the second-mentioned link and extending through an opening of one of the hinges, the portion extending through the opening in the; hinge being of a rack type, and a spring urging the rack portion of the bar into engagement With the upper edge of the opening in the hinge.
2. A case of the class described comprising a, pair of sections hingedly connected at adjacent ends, a drawing board on the upper section, means for swivelly mounting the drawing board on said upper section, and means for holding said upper section in different angular adjusted positions with respect to the lower section or closed thereover, said means including a link pivotally connected with the lower section, a link pivotally connected With the upper section, said links being pivotally connected together, a, bar pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of the second-mentioned link and extending through an opening of one of the hinges, the portion extending through the opening in the hinge being of a rack type, and a spring urging the rack portion of the bar into engagement with the upper edge of the opening in the hinge, a pair of clamps pivotally mounted in the lower section so they may be sWung up into compartments provided therein or to a depending operative position, and clips in the compartments for holding the clamps in an operative position.
