Description
Dee. 29, 1936 2,066,062 sEPAnABLE FAs'rENEn Sverre Quisling, Madison, Wis., assigner to Hookless Fastener Company, Meadville, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application January 12, 1934, Serial No. 706,386
4Claim8.
My invention relates to separable fasteners and more particularly to the type of fastener disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,572,808.
The present invention has for its object to improve the patented construction so as to make it more certain in operation; capable of being completely separated throughout its length; and to simplify the construction of the trough member making it easy to attach to the desired article, and improving the working qualities of the fastener.
Other objects a'nd advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following specification.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. In this drawing:
Fig. 1 illustrates a bag equipped with my improved fastener;
Fig. 2 is a view of the fastener in open position;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2:
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the initial connecting device.
I have shown my fastening device as applied to a hand bag but it will be understood that it is also useful on many other types of articles such as garment bags and various articles of clothing. The bag comprises a pouch portion 'I with upper edge portions 8 and 9 forming the mouth of the bag. The fastening device comprises generally a trough member Ill secured to the bag by Astitch-- ing, or any suitable means as indicated in Fig. 3; a flexible hollow easement II which may be formed of the bag material as shown in Fig. 2, or formed separately and attached to the bag; and a filling member I2 slidably mounted within the hollow easement. The filling member may comprise a cord with a large diameter portion I3 and a small diameter portion I4. When the small diameter portion is within the easement it will collapse so that it may freely pass through the opening I5 leading to the trough passage I6, which is of larger diameter than the width of the opening.
A feature of the present invention is the outward flare on the mouth I5 forming the guide surfaces Il, I8 which tend to guide the easement and cord into the trough passage without catching. 'I'his avoids the difficulty which was sometimes experienced due to the binding or wedg- (Cl. 15o-3) ing of the cord and easement against the edge of the trough mouth. 4
The trough member is preferably made as a rigid one-piece tubular member from metal or celluloid and the opening extends throughout its entire length.
It is desirablel to disconnect the sides of the bag completely to allow a wider opening. For this purpose the Casement has at one end a rigid portion I9 which is adapted to be manually forced into the trough member at one end. This rigid section and trough member are preferably provided with cooperating shoulders and grooves 20 and 2| so as to align the fastener parts in the proper relation.
It is believed that the operation of the device will now be readily apparent. lAssuming that the fastener is open as in Fig. 2, the user will snap together the initial connecting device at one end and then pull the cord member toward the left. The large diameter portion will pass through the rigid tubular section and as it moves through the casement it will pull the easement through the mouth and into the trough passage and will lock the same securely in position when the cord fills the passage. The stop member 22 will limit the closing movement of the cord and the stop member 23 will limit the opening movement. 'Ihese stops carry a hook and eye arrangement or other suitable connecting device and when fastened together, they constitute a decorative buckle, the cord being used as a carrying handle. In opening the fastener after the cord has been pulled to proper position, a slight pull on the tab 2| will separate the easement from the trough member.
While I have in this specification specifically shown and described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purposes of illustration and description and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A fastening device of the character set forth comprising a rigid trough member having a V mouth extending throughout the length thereof narrower than the trough passage, a hollow ilexible easement member adapted to pass through said mouth into the trough passage, a slidably mounted filling member within said hollow casement, said hollow easement having a rigid tubular section adjacent one end adapted to be manually connected with said trough member to form an initial connecting means whereby said illling member maybe pulled through said'easement to lock the same in said trough member.
2. A fastening device of the character set forth comprising a trough member having a mouth extending throughout the length thereof narrower than the trough passage, a ilexible hollow easement and a filling member having a large diameter portion slidable within the easement to pull said easement into the said trough member and lock it in position therein, said illling member having a small diameter portion permitting said easement member to collapse and pass through said mouth, and stop members on the ends ot said illing member'I to limit the sliding movement thereof, said stop members having means for connecting the same together to form an endless loop which provides a handle.
3. A fastening device of the character set i'orth, comprising a tubular member of rigid material having a. mouth extending along its entire length, the walls of said tubular member adjacent said mouth being bent outwardly to form a ilared entrance with smooth guiding walls o! substantial area, a ilexible easement and a illling cord slidable within said easement having a large diameter portion and a small diameter portion, a
rigid ferrule attached to said easement at 'one end adapted to be manually pressed into the mouth'oi' said trough member. said trough member and ferrule having interengaging means to prevent endwise movement after the parts are engaged, said large diameter portion filling4 said easement when the fastener is closed, to prevent it from passing through said mouth, whereas said small diameter portion when pulled within said easement permits said easement to be withdrawn through said mouth.
4. A fastening device oi the character set forth, comprising a onepieee trough member of rigid material having a longitudinally extending passage and opening through a mouth narrower than the diameter of the passage. said mouth extending throughout the length of said trough member, said mouth having outwardly ilaring walls I1, Il integral with the trough member, a flexible hollow easement adapted to pass through said ilared mouth opening into said passage, and
.a ilexible member slidably mounted within said easement and having a portion suiiiciently large to extend into said easement and the trough passage.
