Description
UNITED STATES PTNT OFFICE..-
- LIVONIA WHITNEY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,524, dated June 8, 1858.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Livonia WHITNEY, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Door-Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a view of the inner side of a door with my improvement applied to it. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of do. the plane of section passing through the lock. Fig. 3, is a vertical section of do. the plane of section also passing through the lock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention is designed for an inside lock or bolt and is intended to supersede the usual slide bolts and catches hitherto employed for such purpose.
The invention consists in the peculiar manner of securing the arbor of the knob in the lock, said arbor having a bit attached to its inner end and operating the bolt as the arbor is turned, the device forming a neat and ornamental aifair suitable for buildings of a superior class.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a door of ordinary construction and B, represents a lock case which is of ordinary rectangular form and proper size. This case may be constructed of cast or wrought metal and itis fitted in a mortise made as usual in the end of the door as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3.
Vithin the case B, a sliding bolt C, is placed and fitted between suitable guides, and D, is a tumbler which is also placed within the case B, and arranged as usual to serve as a check or guard to the bolt and prevent the same from being casually moved.
E, is an arbor on the inner end of which a key bit (a) is formed, and having a knob F, on' its outer end. The bit (a) is fitted within the case B, a hole being made in the case B for it to pass through and the arbor E, passes through an opening or hole made in the door, and also through a washer or plate G which is secured to the inner side of the door by screws.
In the inner side of the door A, a circular recess (Z2) is made to receive a circular plate H, which is slotted from its center to its periphery as shown clearly by the dotted lines, in Fig. l. The plate H, is fitted over or on the arbor E, the edges or sides of the plate which form the boundary of the slot fitting in a groove (c) made circumferentially in the arbor E, as shown plainly in Figs. 2 and 8.
The washer or plate G is secured to the door directly over the plate H, by means of screws, and the washer or plate retains the plate H, in the recess (b), see Figs. 2 and The slotted plate H, it will be seen retains the arbor E, in the lock in consequence of the groove fitting in the slot of the plate. The bit (a) therefore cannot be casually withdrawn from the lock, and the bolt D, is moved back and forth by turning the knob F.
By this arrangement an ornamental inside catch or fastening is obtained, one far superior to the slide bolts which are exposed and have an unsightly appearance, besides the ordinary slide bolts may be readily op; erated from the outside of the door by boring a hole through and inserting a rod or wire, whereas by my improvement the knob I`,- cannot be readily turned except by the hand. My improvement also on account of its chaste and neat appearance may be applied to the doors of houses of a superior class where the ordinary inside bolts would not be used for the reason above stated.
I do not claim the sliding bolt C and tumbler D, operated upon by a bit (a), for this is a well known and common device used in the majority of locks. Neither do I claim attaching a knob F, to an arbor having a bit (a) at its inner end for this or its equivalent is used in cases where the arbor passes entirely through the lock and door, but, having thus described my invention,
That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the slotted plate H arbor E and washer G, as herein shown and described.
LIVONIA WHITNEY.
