This invention relates to pressing machines, such as machines having an opening and closing movement, and particularly garment and laundry platen presses. The invention has for its principal object a particularly simple and efficient control for the power mechanism which closes the press by which control the press is first closed into a preliminarily closed position and then through delayed pressure means, the press is closed into final or heavy pressure position upon the operation of one manual. In other words, a control is provided which controls the closing of the press with a two step operation by operating means which upon one operation effects the two steps.
Another object of the invention is to devise a new and novel control for fluid pressure operated means, such as a motor means having two motors, by means of which one fluid pressure operated means or motor is first operated and then after a predetermined delay the second fluid pressure operated means or motor is operated.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, showing a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a conventional type of garment or laundry press in closed position embodying my invention with some parts broken away to better illustrate the construction.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic sectional view of the actuating mechanism and the control means therefor.
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic plan view of two presses arranged to be operated by one operator and for which type of'operation the invention herein is particularly suited.
My invention is here shown as embodied in a conventional type of garment and laundry press in which the cooperating pressing elements or jaws are provided to open and close on the work. The jaws illustrated are, respectively, a buck l and a head 2 movable toward and from the buck. The buck is mounted upon a suitable bracket or goose neck 3, which in turn is mounted upon a suitable frame 4. The head 2 is carried at the forward end of the usual frame or yoke lever is pivoted between its ends at 6 to an upright l rising from the frame.
This invention particularly comprises a pressure operated motor, connections between the movable member thereof and the movable jaw or head 2 to close the press into preliminarily closed position, a second pressure operated motor and connections operated thereby to move the head into finally closed or heavy pressure position, a manually operated control which, when operated, permits a motive fluid, as air, to flow from the feed line to the motors successively and to delay the flow to the final pressure motor until the head 2 has moved into preliminarily closed position. The pressure operated motors are preferably cylinders and pistons-movable in the cylinders.
Motor means 8 effects the preliminary closing of the press which motor means comprises a cylinder 8 having a piston 9 therein. The motion transmitting means between the rod In of the piston 9 and the head 2, in addition to the lever 5, comprises toggle links H l and I2 pivotally connected together at l3 and pivoted at their outer ends, respectively, to the rear end of the lever at [4 and at l5 to the base of the frame, and a lever [B rigid with the link l2 and forming a bell crank lever therewith. The lever 16 is pivoted at ll to the piston rod l0.
The pressure operated or motor means for delivering final pressure to the head 2 includes a cylinder l8 having a piston l9 therein. The motion transmitting means between the piston l9 and the press head comprises a booster lever 2i! pivoted at 2| to the frame and a cam operated by the piston IQ for actuating the booster lever. The lever 20 extends in a general horizontal direction and has an engaging face 22 on the upper side of its rear end arranged to engage the lower end of the link H when the toggle is in any one of various substantially straightened positions, which it assumes when the movable jaw or head 2 lightly engages the work on the stationary jaw or buck l. The substantially straightened position which the toggle assumes depends on such conditions as the thickness of the work and of the padding on either or both pressing elements. The engaging face 22 is of suflicient extent to engage the lower end of the link I I in any position the. toggle link ll may assume, when the press closes to preliminary closed position. The joint of the toggle at I3 is a pin-and-slot or lost-motion connection, the lower end of the toggle link ll being provided with a slot 23 which receives the pin 63 carried by the other link. Obviously, the pin and slot connection permits endwise movement of the link I I relatively to the link [2.
The booster lever 20 is preferably actuated by a rotary cam or eccentric 24 mounted on a shaft 25 rotatably mounted in the frame and coacting wardly relatively to the link l2 and additionally rock the head carrying lever 5 to apply heavy pressure between the press jaws.
Both of the pistons 9 and I9 are single acting and the press is opened by suitable counter springs when the pressure in the cylinders is released. The cylinder 8 is arranged in vertically inclined position and pivoted at its upper end at 3| to the frame and the piston 9 therein moves downwardly on its power stroke. The cylinder I8 is pivoted at its lower end at the back leg of the machine and the piston therein moves upwardly on its power stroke. The construction of the actuating mechanism including the toggles and the booster lever forms part of this invention in the various combinations of these parts with each other and other parts of the mechanism.
The invention relates to a control means by which the motor means, or specifically the pistons 9 and I9, within the cylinders 8 and I8, respectively, are operated. The cylinder 8 is connected with a feed line 33 for motive fluid, such as compressed air, through a pipe connection including pipe sections 34 and 35, pipe section 35 connecting with a port 36 in the cylinder. A control valve is in this connection and controls the flow of fluid to the cylinder 8.
The control valve includes a valve casing 31 having a normally closed intake valve 38 and a normally open exhaust valve 39, these being connected together by a stem so that they act as a unit. The intake end of the casing 21 is connected to the pipe section 34 and the casing is connected at a point between the valves 38 and 39 to the pipe 35. The valves are operated by an operator-operated means such as a manual or lever 40 which is pivoted at 4| and has an arm 42 which, when the lever is operated, thrusts against a stem 43 of the exhaust valve 39. Obviously, movement of the lever 4|] upwardly will close the exhaust valve 39 and open the intake valve 38 and permit air to flow from the feed line 33 through the pipe section 34, valve casing 3'! and pipe section 35 to the cylinder 8 to actuate the piston therein and close the press into preliminary closed position under light or no pressure.
The valves 38 and 39 are locked in their operated positions by pressure operated means, as a diaphragm 44 in a diaphragm chamber 45 which is connected by a duct 46 to the interior of the valve casing 31. The diaphragm 44 acts upon a sliding stem 41 which thrusts against an arm 48 of the lever 48. Thus, when the lever 40 is operated to close the exhaust valve 39 and open the intake valve 38, said valves will be immediately locked or held in their operated positions by the diaphragm 44 through the sliding stem 41 and lever 40.
The means controlling the flow of air to the cylinder l8 comprises automatically operated pressed intake valve 50 and a normally open exhaust valve 5| therein, these being connected by a stem so that they act as a unit. The intake end of the casing 49 is connected to the feed line 33 and the casing 49 is connected at a point between the valves 50 and 5| to the intake port 52 of the cylinder I8, by a pipe 53. The valves 50 and 5| are automatically operated by pressure operated mechanism or means as a diaphragm 54 located in a diaphragm chamber 55, the diaphragm acting upon a sliding stem 56 which thrusts against one arm of a lever 51 pivoted between its ends at 58, the other arm of which thrusts against a stem 59 of the exhaust valve 5|. The pressure side of the diaphragm chamber 55 is connected in the air system for the cylinder 8 at any point between the valve casing 31 and the cylinder 8 so that the flow of air to the diaphragm chamber 55 is initiated by the lever 40. Actuation of the diaphragm 54 does not take place immediately upon movement of the lever 48 but is delayed by delayed pressure or timer means.
The delayed pressure means comprises a tank or chamber 60 having its intake end connected by a pipe 6| to the pipe 35, and its outlet connected, by pipe sections 62 and 63 and having a valve casing 64 therebetween, to the pressure side of the diaphragm chamber 55. The intake pipe 6| for the tank 60 is provided with a contracted portion or a restricted opening for delayingthe building up of pressure in the chamher or tank 60. The contracted entrance is provided with a needle valve located in a valve casing 65 and adjustable by means of a handle 66. The time required tobuild up a pressure within the chamber 66 is adjustable by means of the needle valve.
The valve casing 64, includes a pressure responsive valve 6'| which has preferably a spring 68 normally tending to open it but the valve is closed when the press is closed into preliminarily closed position by a force applied to it stronger than the spring 68. As here shown, the pressure responsive valve 61 is held closed by air pressure in the valve casing 64 acting against a pressure means such 'as a diaphragm 59 in said casing. This diaphragm is subject to pressures on opposite sides thereof as the pipe section 62 is connected to the valve casing on one side of the diaphragm 69; that is, the side on which the pressure responsive valve 61 is located, and the valve casing is connected on the other side of the diaphragm 69 to the pipe 6| by a pipe 10. The pipe 10 may be connected to any pipe in the air system and is preferably connected to any pipe which is controlled by the manually operated or operator actuated valves 38 and'39.
It will be noted that the pressure responsive valve 61 is held closed and that it is opened by the pressure gradually building up Within the tank 68 and hence by the gradually increasing force applied to the under side of the valve, as shown in the drawings, until this force overcomes the force holding the valve closed. In the construction illustrated the force holding the pressure responsive valve 6'! closed is the pressure in the feed line acting upon a pressure means such as the diaphragm 69. This is the preferred construction since the pressure in the feed line will vary although generally being maintained somewhere at a pressure between 60 and '75 pounds. If means applying a fixed force were provided tohold the pressure responsive valve 61 closed then the timing device would vary in past the needle valve until it approaches that in its operating time for the varying pressures with a fixed' setting for the needle valve 65. If the pressure responsive valve 61 is held closed by a force which varies as the feed pressure varies, the varying operating time at which the valve otherwise would open under such varying pressures would be compensated for, at least to a large extent. This is accomplished by using the varying feed pressure to hold the pressure responsive valve 61 closed. Any valve mechanism is contemplated which opens upon a predetermined pressure being applied thereagainst and also any valve mechanism which utilizes the feed pressure as the force which holds the pressure responsive valve 6! closed and thereby compensates for the varying operating time of the timing mechanism which would otherwise occur as a consequence of the varying feed pressures.
When the manual 46 is operated to close the exhaust valve 39 and open the intake valve 38, air flows with full force through the pipe 35 to the cylinder 6 and actuates the piston 9 and piston rod l6 on the power stroke, and also flows through the pipes 6| and I6 to the valve casing 64 above the diaphragm 69 with full pressure and thus closes the pressure responsive valve 61. At the same time, air is passing from the pipe BI. to the tank 66 so that tank 66 gradually builds up the feed line or the pipe 35 and this pressure is transferred through the pipe 62 to the lower side of the pressure responsive valve 61. When the pressure builds up sufiiciently, the force of the air pressure under the the pressure in the pressure responsive valve together with the force of the spring 68 will open the check valve 61 to permit air to flow through the pipe 63 to the dia-' phragm chamber 55 to actuate the diaphragm 54 therein. The intake valve 56 for the cylinder I6 is opened thereby and the exhaust valve 5| is closed so that air is free to flow from the feed line 33 through the valve casing 49 and pipe 53 to the cylinder l6 and actuate the piston l9 to apply pressure to the booster lever 26. The press is held closed by the locking action of the diaphragms 44 and 54 on the valves 38 and 39, and 56, 5|.
The timing mechanism represented by the re stricted opening or valve 65, the chamber 66 or its equivalent, and the pressure responsive valve 61 is shown in a new relation with respect to the operator actuated valve means 46 and the high power motor 18 irrespective of whether or not the motor 6 is used or some other fluid pressure operated device is substituted therefor. In other words, the low power motor means 8 is merely one form of means or fluid operated means which is operated or functions upon the opening of the operator actuated valve means 46 and in which the opening of this valve meanssets into operation a timing device which controls the delayed operation of a motor means [8.
The press is opened by releasing the air pressure in the cylinder l8 and this result is effected by exhausting the air from the pressure sides of the diaphragm chambers 45 and 55. The release means comprises a release valve having a two step operation. The first step exhausts the air from the diaphragm chamber 55 and hence per- 1 mits the valves 56 and 5| to return to their normal position and the air to exhaust back through the pipe 53 from the cylinder l8 and permit the press to open first to preliminarily closed position and remain in such position. The operator '1' further operates the release valve to its second step to permit air to exhaust from the diaphragm chamber 45 and hence permit the valves 38 and 39 to return to their normal position and air to exhaust from the cylinder 6 and also the tank 66 back through the pipe 35.
A release valve casing H has two exhaust chambers 12 and 13 therein and normally closed spring pressed valves 14 and 15 in the respective chambers. The chamber 12 is connected by a pipe 76 to the pressure side of the diaphragm chamber 45 and the chamber 13 is connected by a pipe 17 to the pressure side of the diaphragm chamber 55, it being here shown as connected to the pipe 63. The valves 15 and 14 are operated successively or with a two step operation by a manual or trip lever 18 having an arm I9 thrusting against the stem 66 of the valve 15 and this valve 15 has a tail rod 6| projecting toward the valve]! and normally spaced therefrom to provide a lost motion connection between the valves.
The operator, in order to open the press, depresses the lever 18 first opening the release valve 15 to permit air to exhaust from the booster cylinder l8 and then opening the valve 14 to permit air to exhaust from the primary cylinder 8. If the operator desires to open the press to preliminarily closed position, he maydepress the lever [8 far enough to open the valve 15 only, the lost motion connection between the valves 14 and 15 permitting this actuation of one release valve only. In some instances, it is desirable to hold the press head 2 in preliminarily closed position after the garment or work has been pressed, for drying or other operations, such as air blowing or sucking operations, or merely for drying the work from the heat of the head without pressure. It will be understood that either or both of the pressing elements land 2 are heated.
When a single machine is used, a two hand control may be used instead of the single control 46, but insofar as this invention is concerned, a two hand control and a single control are the same and a dual control would not modify the successive operation nor the function of any element of the construction described. As two hand controls are old insofar as this invention is concerned, it is thought that a description thereof is unnecessary. However, when an operator attends two machines, .a two hand control is not needednor desirable for safety purposes. In Figure 3 two machines are shown as A and B arranged to be worked by one operator, and in use, the operator, after arranging the work on machine A, then operates the lever 46 of that machine A while taking a step toward the other machine B, and hence is not at the first machine A when it closes, or, in other words, is out of reach of the first machine A when it closes. Owing to the delayed pressure means, the booster lever 26 is operated automatically after the press preliminarily closes and no additional manual control is necessary and further owing to the delayed pressure means, the booster lever 26 cannot be operated before the toggle link comes into juxtaposition thereto.
What I claim is:
1. In a garment or laundry pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other to close and open the press; a fluid operated motor o-peratively connected to the movable pressing element for actuating the latter into preliminary closed position; a second motor operatively connected with the movable pressing element forclosing the press from preliminary closed position to final closed position; a working fluid supply line; a first conduit connecting the supply line with the first motor; operator-actuated valve means for controlling the flow of working fluid through the first conduit; a second conduit connecting the supply line with the second motor; pressure operated valve means for controlling the flow of working fluid through the second conduit; a third conduit for supplying working fluid to operate said pressure operated valve means; and other valve means controlled by the pressures in the first and third conduits for controlling the flow of working fluid through the third conduit.
2. In a garment or laundry pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing jaws, operating mechanism therefor including motor means for closing the press under initial light pressure and applying final heavy pressure thereto; means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor means to close the press under initial light pressure; means to control the supply of working fluid to the motor means to apply final heavy pressure; common operator operated means for actuating the low pressure control means directly and the high pressure control means through mechanism for delaying the action thereof, said delaying mechanism including, valve means having a valve for controlling the operation of the heavy pressure control means, and pressure means controlling the valve means connected on one side directly with the working fluid supply means and on the other side through a bleed conduit and the valve with the same supply means, the pressureon opposite sides of said pressure means controlling the opening of the valve.
3. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a pressure operated motor operatively connected to the movable pressing element for actuating the latter into a preliminarily closed position, a second motor operatively connected with the movable pressing element for closing the press from preliminarily closed position 'to finally closed position, a feed line, a conduit connecting the feed line and the first motor, a manually operated, control valve in said conduit, a second conduit connecting the feed line and the second motor, a normally closed control valve in the second conduit, pressure operated means for operating the last mentioned valve, a third conduit connected to the first conduit in a position to be controlled by the manually operatedvalve in the first conduit, the third conduit being connected to the pressure operated means for the second valve, means for delaying the flow of air through the third conduit, said means comprising a pressure tank in the third conduit and having a contracted inlet whereby the pressure builds 'up gradually in said tank, and a pressure responsive valve between the tank and the pressure operated means which operates the control valve for the second cylinder, said pressure responsive valve being opened by the built up pressure in said tank whereby upon the operation of the manually operated valve in the first conduit the motors are actuated successively.
4. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a pressure operated motor operatively connected to the movable pressing element for actuating the latter into a preliminarily closed position, a second motor operatively con= nected with the movable pressing element for closing the press from preliminarily closed position into finally closed position, a feed line, a conduit connecting the feed line and the first 5 motor, a manually operated control valve in said conduit, a second conduit connecting the feed line and the second motor, a normally closed control valve in the second conduit, pressure operated means for operating the last mentioned 10 valve, a third conduit connected to the first conduit in a position to be controlled by the manually operated valve in the first conduit, the third conduit being connected to the pressure operated means for the second valve, means for delaying 15 the flow of air throughthe third conduit, said means including a pressure responsive valve in the third conduit and arranged to be opened by the building up of the pressure in the third conduit, said pressure responsive valve comprising a casing in which the valve is contained and a spring tending to open the valve, the casing having a pressure operated means pressing against the valve and tending to hold it against its seat, one side of the pressure responsive valve 25 casing being connected to the third conduit and the other side of the casing communicating with the first conduit at a point so that it is controlled by the manually operated valve.
5. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing 30 elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a pressure operated moto'r operatively connected to the movable pressing element for actuating the latter into a preliminarily closed position, a second motor operatively con- 35 nected with the movable pressingelementfor closing the press from preliminarily closed position into finally closed position, a feed line, a conduit connecting the feed line and the'first motor, a manually operated control valve in said conduit, a second conduit connecting the feed line and the second motor, a normally closed control valve in the second conduit, pressure operated means for operating the last mentioned valve, a third conduit connected to the first conduit in a posi- 45 tion to be controlled by the manually operated valve in the first conduit, the third conduit being connected to the pressure operated means for the second valve, means for delaying the flow of air through the third conduit, said means comprising a pressure tank in the third conduit and having'a contracted inlet whereby the pressure builds up gradually in said tank, and a pressure responsive valve between the tank and the pres sure operated means which operates the control 55 valve for the second cylinder, said pressure re sponsive valve being opened by the built up pressure in said tank whereby, upon the operation of the manually operated valve in the first conduit, the motors are actuated successively, said 6 pressure responsive valve comprising a casing in which the valve is located and having a spring tending to open the valve, pressure operated means pressing against the check valve to close it, the pressure responsive valve side of the cas- 5 ing being connected to said tank, and a conduit connected to the other side of the casing to operate the pressure means therein and connected with the first conduit at a point so that it is controlled by the manually operated valve. 7 6. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a pressure operated motor operatively connected to the movable pressing element for actuating the latter into a preliminarily closed position, a second motor operatively connected with the movable pressing element for closing the press from preliminarily closed position to finally closed position, a feed line, a conduit connecting the feed line and the first motor, a manually operated control valve in said conduit, a second conduit connecting, the feed line and the second motor, a normally closed control valve in the second conduit, pressure operated means for operating the last mentioned valve, a third conduit connected to the first conduit in a position to be controlled by the manually operated valve in the first conduit, the third conduit being connected to the pressure operated means for the second valve, means for delaying the flow of air through the third conduit, said means including a pressure responsive valve in the third conduit acted upon by the air pressure therein so that when the pressure becomes sufiicient the valve opens, means operated by pressure from the first conduit for holding the pressure responsive valve closed until pressure builds up in the third conduit which acts upon the valve to openit, and pressure operated means for automatically locking the manually operated valve in its operated position.
7. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a pressure operated motor 0peratively connected to the movable element for actuating the latter into a preliminarily closed position, a second motor operatively connected with the movable pressing element for closing the press from preliminarily closed position into finally closed position, a feed line, a conduit connecting the feed line and the first motor, a manually operated control valve in said conduit, a second conduit connecting the feed line and the second motor, a normally closed control valve in the second conduit, pressure operated means for operating the last mentioned valve and lock- 7 ing the same in operated position, a third conduit connected to the first conduit in a position to be controlled by the manually operated valve in the first conduit, the third conduit being connected to the pressure operated means for the second valve, means for delaying the fiow of air through the third conduit, said means ineluding a pressure responsive valve in the third conduit acted upon by the air pressure therein so that when the pressure becomes sufficient the valve opens, means operated by pressure from the first conduit for holding the pressure responsive valve closed until pressure builds up in the third conduit, pressure operated means for automatically locking the manually operated valve in its operated position, and manually operated means releasing the locking means of the second valve and the first valve.

In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a pressure operated motor operatively connected to the movable pressing element for actuating the latter into a preliminarily closed position, a second motor operatively connected with the movable pressing element for closing the press from preliminarily closed position into finally closed position, a feed line,
a conduit connecting the feed line and the first motor, a manually operated control valve in said conduit, a second conduit connecting the feed .line and the second motor, anormally closed contion, a third conduit connected to the first conduit in a position to be controlled by the manually operated valve in the first conduit, the third conduit being connected to the pressure operated means for the second valve, means for delaying 5 the fiow of air through the third conduit,.said means including a pressure responsive valve in the'third conduit and arranged to be opened by the building up of the pressure in the third conciuit, pressure operated means for automatically locking the manually operated valve in its operated position, and a single manually operated means releasing the locking means of the second valve and the first valve, said release means having a two-step operation whereby the locking means for the second valve may be released without releasing the locking means of the first valve.

In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a pressure operated motor operatively connected to the movable pressing element for actuating thelatter intoapreliminarily closed position, a second motor operatively connected with the movable'pressing element for closing the press from preliminarily closed posi- 25 tion into finally closed position, a feed line, .a conduit connecting the feed line and the first motor, a manually operated control valve in said conduit, a secondconduitconnecting the feed line and the second motor, a normally closed 30 valve in the second conduit, pressure operated means for operating the last mentioned valve and locking the same, in its operated position, a third conduit connected to the first conduit in a position to be controlled by the manually operated .valve in the. first conduit, the third conduit. being connected to the pressure operated means for the second valve, means for delaying the fiow of air through the third conduit, said means including a pressure responsive valve in the third conduit and arranged to be opened by the building up of the pressure in the third conduit, pressure operated means for automatically locking the manually operated valve in its operated position, a single manually operated means for releasing the locking means of. the second valve and the first valve, said release .means comprising a valve casing having two compartments and normally closed spring pressed exhaust valves in the compartments respectively, the compartments being co-nnected respectively to the locking means of the first and second valves, and a manual and connections operated thereby to first open the valve in the chamber connected to the locking means for the second valve. r

In a garment or laundry pressing machine in combination cooperative pressing jaws and operating mechanism therefor including a first) motor means for closing the press under initial light pressure, and a second motor means for applying final heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; operator operated means to control the flow of working fluid to the first motor means; and mechanism operated from said operator operated means for controlling the flow of working fluid to the second motor means, including timer mechanism, controlled by the working fluid pressure, for delaying the flow of working fluid to said second motor.

A garment or laundry pressing machine comprising cooperative pressing jaws which open and close on the work, operating mechanismlto open and close the jaws including motor means operable to close the press under initial light pressure andtoapply final heavy pressure between the jaws, an operator-operated controlling means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under initial light pressure, a second control means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, pressure actuated mechanism for operating the second controlling means, and means having a restricted opening for fluid pressure connected between the operator-operated means and the pressure actuated mechanism for delaying the actuation of the latter and the closing of the press under final heavy pressure.

A garment or laundry pressing machine comprising cooperative pressing jaws which open and close on the work, operating mechanism to open and close the jaws including motor means operable to close the press under initial light pressure and to apply final heavy pressure between the jaws, an operator-operated controlling means connected to. the motor means and adapted to be connected to, a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under initial light pressure, a second control means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, pressure actuated mechanism for operating the second controlling means, means connected between the operator-operated means and the pressure actuated mechanism for delaying the actuation of the latter and the closing of the press under final heavy pressure including means having a restricted opening for fluid pressure, and a pressure responsive valve between the restricted opening and the pressure actuated means and operable at a predetermined pressure applied thereupon.

A garment or laundry pressing machine comprising cooperative pressing jaws which open and close on the work, operating mechanism to open and close the jaws including motor means operable to close the press under initial light pressure and to apply final heavy pressure between the jaws, an operator-operated controlling means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under initial light pressure, a second control means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the controlling the closing closingof the press under final heavy pressure; pressure actuated mechanism for operating the second controlling means, means having a restricted opening forfluid pressure connected between the operator-operated means and the pressure actuated mechanism for delaying the actuation of the latter and the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, and means for releasing the fluid pressure on the pressure actuated mechanism.

A garment or laundry pressing machine comprising cooperative pressing jaws which open and close on the work operating mechanism to open and close the jaws including motor means operable to close the press under initial light pressure and to: apply final heavy pressure between the jaws, an operatoroperated controlling means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under initial light pressure, a second control means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, pressure actuated mechanism for operating the second 25 controlling means, means having a restricted opening for fluid pressure connected between the operator-operated means and the pressure actuated mechanism for delaying the actuation of the latter and the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, means to hold the operator-operated controlling means in operated position, and means releasing the holding means and the fluid pressureon the pressure actuated mechanism. 1

A garment or laundry pressing machine comp-rising cooperative pressing jaws which open and close on the work, operating mechanism to open and close the jaws including motor means operable to close the press under. initial light 40 pressure and to apply final heavy pressure between the jaws, an operator-operated controlling means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under 45 initial light pressure, a second control means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, pressure actuated mechanism for operating the second controlling means, means connected between the operator-operated means and the pressure actuated mechanism for delaying the actuation of the latter and the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, including means 55 having a'restricted opening for fluid pressure, and a pressure responsive valve between the restricted opening and the pressure actuated means and operable at a predetermined pressure applied thereto, means to hold the operator-operated means in operated position, and means releasing the holding means and the fluid pressure on the pressure actuated means.

A garment or laundry pressing machine comprising cooperative pressing jaws which open and close on the work, operating mechanism to open and close the jaws including motor means operable to close. the press under initial light pressure and to apply final heavy pressure between the jaws, an operator-operated controlling 70 means connected to the motor means and adapted to be connected to a supply of workingfluid' for of the press under initial light P 55 7 e nd 1 12 0 m a QOI IJf EQ to the motor means and adapted to be connected 75 to a supply of working fluid for controlling the closing of the press under final heavy pressure, pressure actuated mechanism for operating the second controlling means, means connected between the operator-operated means and the pressure actuated mechanism for delaying the actuation of the latter and the closing of the press under final heavy pressure including means having a restricted opening for fluid pressure, a pressure responsive valve between the restricted opening and the pressure actuated means, a spring engaging the check valve to hold it open, and pressure means connected with a source of fluid pressure and engaging the check valve and holding the same closed; and means to release the fluid pressure upon the pressure actuated mechanism. A motor mechanism comprising a pair of motors, a first valve means to supply working fluid to one of the motors, a second valve means to supply Working fluid to the other motor, pressure actuated mechanism to operate the second valve means, operator-operated means to actu ate the first valve means to supply working fluid to its motor and to the pressure actuated mech anism, and timer means set into operation upon actuation of the operator-operated means to delay the flow of working fluid to said pressure actuated mechanism.
19. A fluid pressure mechanism comprising a pair of fluid pressure operated means, a first valve means to supply working fluid to one of the fluid pressure operated means, a second valve means to supply working fluid to the other fluid pressure operated means, operator-operated means to actuate the first valve means to supply working fluid to its fluid pressure operated means, pressure actuated mechanism controlled by the actuation of the operator-operated means to operate the second valve means, and timer means set into operation upon actuation of the operator-operated means to delay the flow of working fluid to said pressure actuated mechanism.

A motor mechanism comprising a pair of motors; a first valve means to supply working fluid to one of the motors; a second valve means to supply working fluid to the other motor; operator-operated means to actuate the first valve means to supply working fluid to its motor; pressure actuated mechanism to operate the second valve means; and timer means set into operation upon actuation of the operator-operated means to delay the flow of working fluid to said pressure actuated mechanism including a chamber, means permitting the slow leaking of working fluid into the chamber, and a second valve which opens upon a predetermined fluid pressure in the chamber.
21. A motor mechanism comprising a pair of motors; a first valve means to supply working fluid to one of the motors; a second valve means to supply working fluid to the other motor; operator-operated means to actuate the first valve means to supply working fluid to its motor; pressure actuated mechanism to operate the second valve means; and timer means set into operation upon actuation of the operator-operated means to delay the flow of working fluid to said pressure actuated mechanism including a chamber, means permitting the slow leaking of working fluid into the chamber, a valve connected with the chamber and with the pressure actuated mechanism, a diaphragm connected with the first valve means to receive fluid pressure therefrom and with the valve to hold the same closed until overloalanced by the pressure from the chamber whereupon the second valve means is operated.

A motor mechanism comprising a pair of motors, a first valve means to supply working fluid to one of the motors, pressure operated holding means to hold the first valve in operate-d position, a second valve means to supply working fluid to the other motor, pressure actuated mechanism to operate the second valvemeans, operator-operated means to actuate the first valve means to supply working fluid to its motor and to the pressure actuated mechanism, timer means set into operation upon actuation of the operator-operated means to delay the flow of working fluid to the pressure actuated mechanism and to the pressure operate-d holding means, and means to exhaust the motors.
23. In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combination, cooperative pressing jaws and operating mechanism therefor including motor means for closing the press under initial light pressure and applying final heavy pressure thereto; first valve means to supply working fluid to the motor means to close the press under initial light pressure; means to hold the first valve means in operated position; second valve means to supply working fluid to the motor means to apply final heavy pressure to the pressing jaws; working fluid pressure actuated mechanism for operating said second valve means; operator-operated means to actuate the first valve means to supply working fluid under pressure to the motor means and to the pressure actuated mechanism for operating said second valve means and to the first valve holding means; timer means set into operation upon actuation of the operator-operated means to delay the flow of working fluid to said pressure actuated mechanism and to the first valve holding means; and means to exhaust the motor.
