This invention relates to improvements in brief cases., Y Y

'I'he principal object -of the invention is to provide a metal protector on a brief case so as to frame the edges thereof.

Some of the ,advantages of the invention are as follows: By covering the edge portions of a brief case they will be protected from rough wear and tear and will eliminate ragged and shabby edges. The usual stitching will be enclosed and be kept from opening, tearing or bursting. The protector will be inflexible or rigid so as to maintain the shape of the case for the entire life of the same. It will make it possible to stand the case in an upright position. The case having the protector of the present invention Will not coil up and be worn out at its cor-A ners, and will be neat in appearance, and will be strong, durable and capable of standing rough usage.

The nature of the invention andV its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a perspective view of a brief case embodying the invention;

In the drawing, the brief case selected to illustrate the invention is of the usual construction and is made of leather or other suitable sheet material. The case as shown in the present instance consists of front and rear sections I and II respectively, and a bellows or gusset structure consisting of the bottom and end sections I2 and I3 respectively, interposing the front and rear sections I0 and II. The rear section II has formed in continuation thereof a closure flap I4 capable of being brought over the front section IIJ to close the case. The flap I4 is latched in its closed position by the usual snap latch and straps and buckles as shown. The marginal edge portions at the ends and bottom of the front section Ill and also the rear section II are secured to the marginal edge portions of the ends I3 and bottom I2 by means of stitching I5 in order to join/the front section I0 and rear section Il to the ends I3 and bottom I2. The case having the features mentioned is of the usual conventional construction.-

In accordance with the invention use is made of a metal protector ati the front and rear o-f the case, so as to extend continuously along the end and bottom edges of the case. The Vprotector at the front and rear is o-f the same construction and consists of aiu-shaped frame I6 Which is of cross-sectional rounded channel construction. The frame I6 may be applied or secured in any preferred manner so as to be disposed exteriorly of the end and botom edge portions with the stitching I enclosed thereby. The frame having the construction mentioned will provide opposite longitudinal edges I'I which impinge the lapped portionsV of the case sections, and at the same time crimp said edge portions as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. In this manner each frame will be securely applied. If desired, in order to aid in securing the frame I6 in place, the longitudinal edges I'I thereof may be provided with barbs or pointed projections I8, to impale the edge portions of the case sections, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. It is to be understood that the stitching I5 may be omitted, and the frame I6 may be relied upon to not only protect the edge portions of the case sections but also to connect them to each other to'form the case. A frame I9 similar in construction to the frame I6, but having shorter end portions is applied or secured to the edge portions of the flap I4 to protect the same. The frames I6 and I9 may be chromium or nickel-plated, or may be coated to match the color of the material of the case, to add to the appearance of the case.

As shown in Fig. 3 the opposite longitudinal edges I1 of the frame are offset and bent toward each other in order to effectively impinge the material of the case sections and also to crimp the same to thus effectively retain the frame in place, to prevent the edge portions from slipping out of the frame.

In Fig. 5 there is shown a frame 20 similar to the frame I6, with the exception that the longitudinal edges 2I are not offset with respect to each other. The frame 20 is shown applied to the edge portions of the case sections which are lapped, stitched as at 22, and provided with a filler 23. The stitching 22 occurs along opposite sides of the filler 23 to form a bead which is enclosed by the frame 20.
