FOOT CONSTRUCTION FO R DOLLS OR THE LIKE Oct. 4
T. GRAITCER. 2,043
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Tana Graitcer, Philadelphia, Pa. Application October 4, 1934, Serial 'No. 77463766 '7 Claims.
My invention relates td the construction of feet for dolls, manikins and similar articles.
A purpose of my invention is to facilitate the construction of weighted dolls feet by enclosing the weight within a covering of pliable -.mate
rial, such as paper, legs'by means of the A further purpose is securing said weight at the pliable material.
to manufacture at low cost dolls feet which will have a more life-like andattractive appearance than those heretofore made.
A further purpose is to wrap a weight for weighting dolls feet in paper or similar material, to inscribe or impress upon the paper printing or artistic work simulating the appearance of human feet or shoes, and to secure the weight thus covered-by tabs glued to the legs.
A further purpose is doll to toe-in by leg and a weight within the opp osite to the side toe I.
tive feet of a doll,
to cause the feet of a inserting a tab between the foot, on the side toward which-the foot is to A further purpose is to fold opposite counterpart blanks about weights to form the respecmanikin or the like, and to secure the weights to the legs by tabs from the blanks.
A .further purpose is to produce diverging ends on the legs of dolls, manikins or the like for making .a securing attachmentto a foot covering "My invention relates both to the methods involved and to the article produce In the drawing I I the many possible have illustratedone only of variations of my invention,
choosing'the form shown from the standpoint of satisfactory operation and convenient illustration of theprinciples involved.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the feet of a doll, manikin or the legs.
the like, with a portion of Figure 2 is a section of Figure 1 upon the line 2--2 thereof.
Figures ,3 and 4 are plan views of the blanks used in making the casings for the right and Figure 8 is .a perspective view of the weight or dipsie employed in my invention.
In the drawing like numerals refer to likeparts.
One of the extremely vulnerable portions of most do1l-constructio are molded "of wax, they may be given s is the feet. If the feet 'or similar plastic material,
a very life-like appearance,
but are generally unlikely to contribute materialin Figures 5 1y to lowering the center of gravity of the doll and thus rendering the doll stable when supported on its own feet. Particularly in the manufacture of dolls from carboard, pulp board, strawboard, wall board, illustration board, fiber board and other similar products, by whatever name they maybe known, resort has been had to various constructions of the feet to render the doll more stable. One of these devices has been to mount the legs on a large base which bears no resemblance to the human foot and is unsatisfactory for that reason. Another plan is to support the legs from skis or long wooden feet which extend both to the front and to the rear of the legs and are relatively stable but awkward and inhuman in appearance.
By my improved foot construction, the feet are weighted bya lead weight known as a weight, and nevertheless the feet present a life-like and rather attractive appearance.
In Figure 1 I show the right leg 26 and the left leg 2| of a doll or manikin. The doll shown is'of the type stamped from cardboard or some other type of boar-d,such as. one of those mentioned. It is, of course, suitably decorated to present a life-like appearance, and to permit dressingby various paper dresses cut out by the child.
The right foot '22 andthe left foot '23 are opposite counterparts, each consisting of a foot casing 25 and a weight 25. The weight has -a flat sole 26, a curved toe portion 21, an arched instep portion 28 and a flat heel portion 29. According to my preferred construction, thesame weight may be used for both the right and the left foot, though the weights for the two feet may be different if desired.
The blanks for the casings of the right and left feet are opposite counterparts as shown at 30 and 3! in Figures 3 and 4. I will describe the formation of the tabs on the right foot casing 30, applying primes to the similar tabs on the left foot casing 3|.
The instep portion '32 of the casing is curved over the instep 28 of the weight, and the inner sole tab 33 is folded down (with respect to the position of blankof Figure 3) about the score line'34 across-the. sole 26 of the weight as-shown and 6. This leaves the toeing-in tab 35 extending toward the rear, as ithas not yet been folded down (with respect to the position of Figure 3) about the fold line 36. The outer sole tab 31 isnext folded down (with respect to the position of Figure 3) about the score line 38 and over the inner sole tab 33, to which adhesive has been applied. The inner sole .tab 33 and the outer sole tab 31 arethus united together by adhesive.
The Achilles-tendon tab 39 is new extended toward the rear as shown in Figure 5, as it has not yet been folded down (with respect to the position of Figure 3) about the score line 40. I next fold the toeing-in The tendency is to cause the foot to toe-in because the toeing-in tab 35 is on one side only, so that the space 52 (Figure '7) is somewhat wedge. shaped, in. The next operation is in Figure 3) the Achilles-tendon tab 39 about its fold line 40, and secure the tab 39 against the tab 48 and against the rear of the leg by adhesive.
The adhesive may be replaced or assisted by metallic fastenings, of which one is shown at 53 passing through the Achi1les-tendon tab 39,
the outer heel tab 48, the inner heel tab 41 and the lower end 43 of the leg into the soft metal (desirably lead) of the weight.
It will be evident that the whole of the casing is united firmly to the leg, holding the weight in a fixed position. The casing has a sabot-like printing or art work. It will be evident that orders of folding may be used.
Somewhat less desirably, the blank for the foot casing may be part of the blank for the body of the doll. The casing may preferably be heavy and I, therefore, claim all such in so far as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
casing around the weight, in securing together the tabs which permit the easing to engage with itself and in securing to the leg the tabs which permit the casing to engage the leg.
2. The method of forming the foot of a doll, manikin or the like, using a weight of foot-like shape and a casing, which consists in locating the weight in front of the leg, in folding the casing around the weight, in extending between the weight and the leg a tab on the opposite side from that toward which the foot is to toe and in securing the casing and weight in the toed position to the leg by tabs from the casing.
3. The method of forming the foot of a doll,
5. A pair of dolls feet formed of weights and opposite counterpart paper blanks folded around the weights and having tabs securing the weights to the legs of the doll.
6. A construction for a dolls foot comprising a weight of foot-like contour and a separate casing folded about the weight, having tabs uniting having a tab extending between the weight and the dolls leg on one side to cause the weight to toe in the opposite direction and having tabs uniting the casing to the dolls leg.
'7. In a construction for the foot of a doll, manikin or the like, a dolls leg having an extremity whose sides are tapered and larger at the lowermost end, a weight positioned in front of the extremity of the leg and a casing folded about the weight and about the extremity of the leg, secured to the leg, engaging the tapered porthe leg.
