2 Claims.` (01.30-50) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEy This invention relates to improvements in locks and has particular reference to a lock which may be applied to any opening where it is desired to lock the same against entrance by an unauthorized person. I
The principal object of the invention is to produce a device which may be employed on motor vehicles having separate operating mechanism such as an inside handle and an outside handle.
A further object is to provide, in the case of use on motor vehicles, a meansfor unlocking the several doors or other openings by the manipulation of a key in one lock, rather than having a separate locking mechanism on each door, or
other opening, such as luggage compartments,
rumbleseats, etc.
Another object of the invention isto provide a lock that can readily operate in the presence of friction and is applicable to close fitting doors.
A still further object is to produce a device which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, compact, and highly eiiicient in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, showing my invention applied to an automobile door lock,

Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic View showing an arrangement wherein a plurality of locks may be simultaneously locked or unlocked.
Inthe case of automobiles or other similar situations where there are several doors or other objects to be locked, it is usually necessary to bolt each door or object from the inside except one, then to lock this remaining one from the outside, and to reverse the operation when unlocking; or else to lock each one with a separate key. Applicant has, therefore, devised a lock which can be used in conjunction with several other similar '45 locks, simultaneously, by the manipulation of one key in a key-operated master switch, preferably located on one door and locking the door on which it is located by mechanical means, thus s ensuring entrance to the vehicle even in case of failure of the other locks through a break in the circuit or the battery becoming discharged accidentally.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a plate upon which is slidably mounted the catch 6. This catch is normally pressed forward by a spring 7, also a spring 8 bears against an arm 9 of an actuating plate 11, which is slidably held upon the plate 5 by a guide l2. A pull bar 60 13 is secured to the inner handle of the door and has a sliding engagement with the plate 11 through the medium of a slot 14 and pin 16, which pin'is secured to the plate 11. The outer handle of the door shown in dotted lines of Fig. 2 is con- 55 nected to one end of a yoke 17, the opposite end of which is pivotally mounted on the plate 5 as shown at 18 and has a stop 19 which bears against one portion of the plate 5. as shown at 20.
A shoulder 22 bears against the actuating plate 70 llwith the result that when the handle is rotated,`thus moving the yoke in the direction of the arrow'of Fig. 1, the actuating plate will be slid toward they left of the drawing against the tension of the spring 8 withdrawing the bolt 6. 75 An obstruction block 23 is pivoted as at 24 and normally held in the position of Fig. 1 by a spring 26. 'Ihis obstruction block is pivotally connected to the movable armature of a magnetic solenoid 27. 'Ihe obstruction block 23 has 80 a shoulder 28 which is spaced from the shoulder 29 of the plate 11. A downward extending finger 31 formed upon the plate 11 engages the camshaped end 32 of an electric switch designated as a wholeby the numeral 33. One side of this switch is grounded by a wire 34 while the opposite side is connected by a wire 36 to one side of the solenoid 27 while the opposite side of the solenoid is connected by a wire 37 to a key operated controlling switch 38, the opposite side of V which switch isconnected to the positiveside of the battery. In Fig. 3 I have shown a series of locks electrically connected in series to a remotely positioned switch.
` The operation of my device is as follows:-
Assuming that the lock is installed upon a motor vehicle and electrically connected to the battery thereof and the controlling switch closed with the parts shown in the position of Fig. 1,
if a person desires to enter or leave the vehicle,
it is only necessary to actuate either the inside or outside handle in the customary manner to move the catch 6. Assuming that a person is entering the vehicle, actuation of the handle outside the vehicle will rst rotate the yoke 1'7. 105
moving the a'ctuating plate 11 in the direction of the solid arrow of Fig. 1. As this plate moves rearwardly toward the obstruction block, the iinger 31 will push the cam 32 downwardly, thus closing the switch 33 and thus energizing the 110 solenoid 27, lifting the obstruction block out of the path of movement o! the actuator plate. Movement of this actuator plate will in turn pull upon the catch 8 until it is retracted so that the door may be opened. Operating the inside handle will pull upon the pull bar 13 and as soon as the actuator plate 11 is movedthe same action will take place. Should a person desire to lock the car, the controlling key switch is moved so as to open the electric circuit and therefore, as the actuator plate is moved it will engage the shoulder 28 of the armature and cannot move any further, therefore, the catch cannot be operated and the door will remain in locked condition.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention. I claimt- 1. In a device of the character described, a lock plate, an actuator plate slidable on said first mentioned plate, a catch capable of being moved by said actuator plate, a pivoted obstruction block in'alignment with said actuator plate, a solenoid for moving said block out of alignment with said Aplate, and an electrical switch operated by said
