Description

Aug. 22, 1933. J, R PRICE 1,923,456
PACKAGE FOR STRIP OR LIKE MATERIALS Filed June l5. 1931 ATTORNEY.
Patented Aug. 22, 1933 uNirED STATES .i .n V1,923,456.
PATENT OFFICE 4 claims.
This invention relates to a package and more particularly to one of that character for enclosing continuous strip products, such as wire solder and the like, and has for its principal objects to prevent unwinding of the product and to provide inspection of the product without Yundoing the package.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a package constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the 'wrapper of the package removed to dispense th product. K
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the wrapper, particularly illustrating a measuring scale yassociated therewith, whereby lengths of the product may be measured incidental to its dispensing.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
1 designates a spool preferably formed of metal and having a central tubular core 2 provided with end disks 3 and 4 between which the prod- Ai uct on the core, such as continuous wire solder 5,
' is wound, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The disks 3 and 4 may be secured to the core in any preferred manner since the specific construction of the spool forms no part of the present invention.
6 designates a wrapper preferably comprising a rectangular sheet metal strip having substantially the same width as the spacing between the disks 3 and 4 and of sufcient length to substanitially encircle the solder wound on the spool. The length of the wrapper, however, is preferably shorter than the periphery of the spool in order to leave a gapor window '7 between its ends through which the nature of the product may be 'observed without removing the wrapper from the spool. Y
In order to retain the wrapper about the spool,
. one end thereof is provided with spaced tongues 'tangular strip substantially equal in width to the of,rand a tongue on the opposite end of the wrapas the solder, is wound on the spool and the wrapper is drawn thereabout between the disks so that the ends of the tongues may be projected through the slots 10 land 11 and bent over as at 13 to retain the Wrapper.
The nature ofthe product may then be readily observed through the spaces between the tongues and in case of solder, the kind of solder, such as rosin core, acid core, or the like, may be observed. A
To dispense theproduct, the tongues are bent back so that they will pass through the slots, after which the wrapper may be removed, as shown in Fg.l2. Portions of the solder may then be unwound from the spool and measured on the scale-of the Wrapper, after which the wrappery may be replaced on the spool to confine that portion of the solder remaining thereon. Y
It is obvious that I have provided a package well adapted for the packaging of ribbon-like products, such as wire, wire solder, tape and the like and that the nature of the product is readily observed through the gap formed between the ends of the wrapper Without removing the wrapper from the spool. 8.0'
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
1. In combination, a package of the character described including a spool member, a wrapper for encircling a product wound on the spool and having shorter length than the circumference of the wound spool to form a window between the ends thereof when the wrapper is extended around the spool for disclosing the nature of said product and to permit contraction of the wrapper 90 for more tightly engaging the product on the spool after a portion of the product is dispensed therefrom, and tongues integral with one end of the wrapper and engageable with the other end thereof to secure the wrapper about the spool.
2. In combination with a spool including a core and spaced disks secured to opposite ends of the* core, a flexible metal wrapper for enclosing a product wound on the spool comprising a recspacing between the disks andA of a length shorter than the circumference of the disks to forma window between said ends when the wrapper is extended about a spool for disclosing the nature of a product wound on the spool and'to permit contraction of the wrapper upon removal of a portion'of said product from the spool, and hav-V ing a plurality of slots adjacent one end thereper for each of said slots and engageable therewith for locking the Wrapper on the spool.
3. In combination With a spool, a Wrapper for enclosing a product Wound on the spool comprising a. rectangular strip having a slot in one end and a tongue on its opposite end adapted to be extended through the slot and bent retractively for securing the Wrapper on the spool, said wrapper being comparatively short and the tongue being relatively long to permit contraction of the wrapper for more tightly engaging the product remaining on the spool after a portion is dispensed therefrom.
4. In combination with a spool including a core dispensed therefrom.
