Description
L. B. PL'IMPTON.
PAPER-BOX.
Patented May 22,1877.
[zzre'niar UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LINUS B. PLIMPTON, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 190.980, dated May 22, 1877; application filed March 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINUS B. PLIMPToN, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Package for Paper, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to a holder or box to contain and be sold with paper and envelopes.
The invention consists in a book'shaped box or package, provided with a pocket attached to the inner portion of thelid of the book-shaped box. The sides of the pocket form a flange about the inner edges of the hinged lid, and fit into the interior of the box when the lid is closed, thereby preventing the box-lid from being moved laterally with reference to the box. The lid, when open, carries with it the sheets of paper, which are thus exposed to View, while the envelopes remain in the box proper. The pocket so holds the paper that it cannot fall out when the lid is being opened or closed.
Figure 1 represents my improved bookshaped box or package closed. Fig. 2 shows it open. Fig. 3 represents the back piece in section.
' In the drawing, the body a of the box is shaped to resemble that portion of a book contained between the covers, and b represents the bottom of the box, it being made to project beyond the body, to resemble a bookcover. Back and. outside of, and attached to, the edge piece 0 of paper, forming the back wall 01 the box, I have shown a wooden back piece, 01, rounded upon its outer side, as shown in Fig. 3 in section, in full size. The end pieces 2 of the box project beyond the end of piece 0, and are cut substantially flush with the rounded portion of the back piece.
The upper edge of the back piece is shouldered at 3, to receive. the lower straight edge of the cover d, same in size as the bottom piece 0, and made, when closed, to resemble the cover of a book. The pocket e inside the cover is formed of a flange, 5, extended about the inner face of the lid back from its edge, and a broad flat piece of card-board or paper, 6, extended from edge to edge, leaving above and behind it an open space or pocket, making a strong receptacle to receive the sheets of paper f. When closed, the pocket portions 5 6 fit within the box portion a, and the package then resembles a book, as in Fig. l. A string, h, fastened to the portion 6 of the pocket at 1;, is arranged to be retained under the edges of the sheets of paper as the paper is placed in the pocket, and by pulling upon the string the paper may be removed from the pocket. The envelopes 8 remain in the box.
The outer covering of the box or package may be of paper, of any desired color or design. and be made to represent in appearance the binding of any Well-known books or volumes.
The package will stand upon ashelf evenly, as will a book, and it forms a neat, cheap, and strong package.
The wooden back piece adds much to the rigidity and durability of the package.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a box or package to contain paper and envelopes, consisting of a box, a b, for the envelopes, and a lid, 0, provided with an interior pocket, 6, made to contain sheets of paper, the sides or edges forming the pocket being adapted to enter within the sides of the box, and the outer portions of the lid beyond the edges 5 of the pocket to rest upon the walls of the box when closed, all being adapted to operate with relation to each other substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LINUS B. PLIMPTON.
Witnesses:
J. HENRY ORR, FRED. PLmrToN.
