IMPROVEMENT ,IN BAG-FASTENERS.

for fastening bags; and the invention consists in the special arrangement and constructionof parts hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction andoperation, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and

to the letters of reference marked thereon, in

which- Figure l is a plan or external view; Fig. 2, a view with one of the sides of the casing removed, showing the internal arrangement of parts; Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line a; :0, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a longitudinal section, the fastening being open.

A represents the casing, within which is arranged the mechanism for holding the cord. This casing may be made of any desired form 5 but I prefer and have adopted the one shown in Fig. 1 of drawing as answering the purpose of a handle and a flat surface, to which a cord can be attached.

The casing A may be cast or otherwise constructed, as desired. I prefer to have it stamped from sheet metal, in two longitudinal duplicate sections, at, having a flange, o,

1 extending around the outer edge of each, ex-

cept at 02 and la,- on the opposite edges of the central part of the casing, where the cord D passes through.

The sections are held together by six or more rivets, e e e e, d, and f. The rivet d is placed in the center of the opening 2', and serves as the pivotal point for two curved arms, B B, each one of which is provided with one or more shoulders, h, so placed as to be equidistant from the rivets e 6.

Two or more of the rivets e are placed on each side of and in a line parallel to the arms B B when extended, and serve as the surfaces against which the cord D is jammed by the arms B B. These arms are spread or forced apart by the slotted wedge O, which has lateral play upon the rivet f. The wedge- O is provided with a thumb-piece, g. The wedge O is of less breadth at its juncture with the thumb-piece than at a short distance from it, the side lines forming a curve in harmony with the curvature of the arms BB. This causes the arms to close upon the wedge, and retain it in place until sufficient force is applied to draw it out.

The operation of this device is as follows: The bag-fastening being open, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the cord D is passed "through the opening it, between one of the arms B and rivets e e, and out at opening a; thence through the eyelet-holes of a bag, and back through the opening 23, and between the other arm B and rivets e e, and out at opening 70. Both ends of the cord are then taken in one hand, and the fastening in the other, and drawn up as close to the bag as it can be gotten. The wedge is then forced in tightly, jamming the cord between the shoulders h and rivets e. The arms B B close in under the thumb-piece sufficiently to prevent the wedge from being withdrawn by any ordinary circumstances, yet permit its withdrawal at will.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the casing A, rivets e, pivoted arms B B, having shoulders d, and wedge O, substantially as shown and described.
