2 Claims. (01. 144-309) The present invention relates to containers as baskets and the like; and its object is to provide improved ends for such containers, and an improved method of making such ends. Said endsthe bottoms or top covers for the baskets and the likecomprise a peripheral or circuitous element or rim of wood or the like and a thin sheet element of wood or other suitable material fastened sidewise to the flat edge of the peripheral element. My improved container end and improved method of making thesame are particularly de scribed in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan or face view of an anvil block having a circular groove receiving the peripheral element of a basket bottom with the. sheet element of said bottom positioned thereon and shown partially broken away;
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof taken on line 2-2 of Figure '1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the same taken on the same line;
Figure 4 is a top plan view similar to Figure l but showing a differently shaped groove in the block and illustrating the manner in' which a bendable strip for forming the peripheral element may be inserted into said groove;
Figure 5 is a sectional view of a portion thereof taken on line 5-5 of-Figure 4; I
Figure 6 is an elevational side view of a portion of a basket of which said bottom forms a part;
Figure '7 is a view of said bendable strip; and
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view of an obvious modified construction of the device in which the groove is formed by a vertical edge 22 and the pins 23.
As indicated in these views, I make or provide a block or anvil 1 with a circuitous groove in its flat face 2 corresponding in shape and dimensions with the basket bottom designated generally 3 to be made. In Figure 1 this groove 4 is circular for the making of a circular basket bottom; but said groove may be of other shapes to correspond with the bottoms of other desired shapes, as the groove of rectangular shape with rounded corners shown at 4 in Figure 4. The said peripheral element 5, circular for use in groove 4 or otherwise shaped as for use in groove 4 is inserted into the correspondingly shaped groove, the bottom fiat side 6 of said element seating on the bottom 7 of the groove and the grooves sides 8 holding said element laterally.
Desirably however, I prepare an elongated bendable strip 9 of suitable material as wood and bend and insert the same into the groove, the end 9 of the strip being first inserted as indicated in Figure 4, and then the rest of the strip is progressively inserted and finally. the opposite end 10' of the strip, thus completing such insertion, the necessary bending and the inserting of the strip thus proceeding together.

It will be seen that in a basket bottom or container end 3 thus made the extremities 17,.18 of strip 9 are securely held in endwise abutting relation so that there need be no overlapping connected ends of such a strip to form a bulge in the section of such a peripheral element where such an overlapping connection exists. The curved side of the container, as the staves 19 of the basket 20, may be fastened to the bottom 3 as by nails or staples 21.
As indicated, the sheet element 11 may be of slightly greater diameter than the peripheral element 5, so that in making a downwardly tapering basket as that shown in Figure 6, the staves are inclined downwardly inwardly when nailed in place. V
The anvilblock, instead of having a groove as above described, may have an upwardly extend ing middle portion witha vertical edge 22 so that a shoulder 24 is formed as shown in Figure 8, the face of this middle portion being shaped corre spondingly with the basket bottoms, etc. to be formed thereon. A strip 9 may be laid on the shoulder and held adjacent its end (as by a pin 23) against this vertical edge of said portion, and the strip progressively bent around said edge, and as such bending progresses the sheet 11 may be nailed to the strips flat upper edge, this process thus holding the strip in its bent form and securing the sheet in place there on.
I claim:
l. A method of making a container end which comprises a curved peripheral element and a middle element fastened sidewise on the flat edge of the peripheral element, said method including the following acts: confining in fixed position one end of an elongated bendable strip, bending the strip progressively from said end to form, the V I then position a sheet 11, of suitable material as wood and desirably composedofplies 12, 13 arranged in crosswise relaperipheral element, holding the same in such bent position, positioning the middle element sidewise on the fiat edge of the bent peripheral element, and fastening the mutually contacting surfaces of said elements together.
2. A method of making a container end which comprises a curved peripheral element and a thin middle element fastened sidewise on one fiat edge .of theperipheral element, said method including the following acts: inserting and holding one end of an elongated bendable strip in fixed position between spaced members of an anvil block,bending and guiding the strip progressively from said end to form the peripheral element, holding the same in such bent position with one of its fiat edges resting on the block, positioning the middle element sidewise on the other flat edge of the bent peripheral element, and nailing saidelements together.
