13 Claims.
This invention relates to the packaging of long pieces, such as bal ties, one of the objects being to provide a package which may be manually made up and which will not come apart during Other objects may be inferred.
The accompanying drawings illustrate packages embodying the features of the present invention, the various figures being as follows:
Figure 1 shows one form of a complete package.
Figures 2 through 4 show one of the ends of this package in varying forms of completeness.
Figures 5 and 6 show the other end of this package, likewise in varying forms of completeness.
Figures 7 through 11 show another form of package in varying forms of completeness, Figures 9 through 11 showing the ends in completed form.
Figure 12 shows a further modification.
Referring to these drawings, bale ties 1 are bunched with their looped ends together to form a group. These looped ends make one end of the group larger than the other, it being assumed that the ties each consist of a straight length of wire with a loop formed at only one of its ends. A flexible covering 2 is over the large end of this group, and a short strand of wire 3 encircles'the group over this covering 2, its ends being intertwisted to fasten .them together.
A long strand of wire 4 has an end fastened to those of the strand 3 by-being intertwisted with them. This strand 4 extends over the end of the group of ties and the covering 2, and back beside -the group with spaced portions forming half hitches 4 holding the latter together.
The covering 2 has a portion 2* doubled back on itself over the short strand 3, and a short strand of wire 5 encircles the group over this doubled portion 2 'and the long strand 4, the ends of this strand 5 being also intertwisted to fasten them together. This strand 5 is arranged between the strand 3 and the extreme end of the group of bale ties. Its intertwisted ends may "be hammered flat against the package. One of the functions of this strand 5 is to hold the strand 4 close beside the group, this being advantageous because of the large size of this end.
' Another short strand 6 is looped about a portion of the bale ties 1- forming the group, and then encircles the latter as a whole, its ends being fastened by intertwisting. This strand 6 is adjacent the small end of the group, and the other end of the long strand 4 is intertwisted with its ends to provide a fastening. A flexible covering '7 is also over this end of the group, one of the bale ties 1 projecting through this covering 7 and being bent double thereover. This helps anchor the covering 7 in place.
Further short strands of wire 8 and 9 encircle the covering '7 and the group of bale ties, these strands being respectively arranged to either sideof the'strand 6, and the strand 9 passing over the doubled portion of the tie l The ends of these last mentioned strands are respectively intertwisted and hammered flat against the package.
It is obvious how the package described may be manually made up, the various steps being indicated by the order of the figures of the draw- In'the other form of package illustrated by the drawings, a flexible coveringlO is over the large end of the group of bale ties. A single long strand of wire 11 has a looped end portion 11 encircling the group over the covering 10 and extending therefrom 'over the end of the group and back beside the latter with spaced portions forming half hitches 11 holding the group together. The looped portion ll may be fastened by making an adjacent loop 11 which is intertwisted with the end of the strand 11, these intertwisted portions being then hammered flat.
The covering 10 has a portion 10* doubled back on itself over the looped portion 11 of the strand 11, one of the half hitches 11 being arranged between the portion 11 and the extreme end of the group to hold this double portion in place.
Another flexible covering 12 is over the small end of the group, another one of the half hitches 11 also serving to hold this covering in place. A portion 12 of this covering is also doubled back, and the strand l1=extends over this end of the group and this covering, a looped portion 11 encircling the group, the doubled portion of the covering 12 and the strand 11 itself. This looped portion may be formed in a manner generally similar to that described in connection withthe other end, the resulting intertwisted parts being likewise hammered flat.
It is also obvious how this last described package may be made up, the figures relating thereto likewise showing the various steps necessary.
The flexible coverings mentioned throughout the specification may consist of suitably shaped pieces of burlap. Half hitches are so well known that it. is not considered necessary to describe their formation in detail. They may be likened to an overhand knot wherein the looped portion of the same encircles the group to be held together.
Although the packages shown consist of ties having single loops, it is obvious that it is immaterial whether the ties have loops in one or both ends or whether the loops are grouped together or not.
All the half hitches so far shown are made by passing the strand of wire under and over itself so that locking results. However, Figure 12 shows this modified in that the strand is passed over and under itself sothat slipping half hitches result.
Since the knotted portions of the strands are more apt to rust than the undeiormed tie wires, this accelerating rusting of the latter, the strands holding the packages together may advantageously be rust-proofed in some manner.
