A look nut 19 may be provided which, when screwed against the face of the flange 17, holds the screw 18 in adjusted position.
The rearwardly extending arm is supported by the clip 12 in an inclined position such that the rear end of the arm projects upwardly into the recess of the cover closely adjacent the flange 10. In order to enable the arm to be positioned at the desired angle, the downturned portion 15 of the clip carries a screw 20 which is threaded into a boss 21 formed in the angle between the clip and arm. The screw 20 may be adjusted forwardly or rearwardly and its head is adapted to engage withthe inner face of the front wall of the tank. The adjustment of the screw 20 determines the angle of the downturned portion 15 and integral arm 16 with respect to the tank Wall. The boss 21 serves to provide a threaded opening of sufficient depth to rigidly support the screw 20 and also tostiffen the connection between the clip and arm. The under side of the cover is preferably provided with a notch or recess 22 to accommodate the clip 12.
The cover retaining device of the present invention is illustrated as applied to a replacement cover. It may be used advantageously with original covers, when such covers are not provided with lugs or ribs whichprevent t1 e cover from sliding forwardly and rearwardly on the top of the tank.

3. Retaining means for a flush tank cover which has an under face flat adjacent its marginal edges edges for engagement with the top edges of the tank walls and recessed within said flat marginal portions whereby a depending flange along the rear edge of the cover is provided, comprising a member having a clip adapted to hook over the upper edge of the front wall of a flush tank and an arm, which, when the clip is in place on the front wall, extends rearwardly from the clip and upwardly into the recess of the cover with its rear end in close proximity to the inner face of the rear flange of the cover, and means carried by the clip for varying the angle at which said arm is supported.
i. Retaining means for a flush tank cover which has an Lmder face flat adjacent its marginal edges for engagement with the top edges of the tank walls and recessed within said flat marginal portions whereby a depending flange along the rear edge of the cover is provided, comprising a member having a clip adapted to hook over the upper edge of the front wall of a flush tank and an arm, which, when the clip is in place on the front wall, extends rearwardly from the clip and upwardly into the recess of the cover with its rear end in close proximity to the inner face of the rear flange of the cover, said arm having a longitudinally adjustable rear end portion.
5. A retaining device for flush tank covers comprising a clip having a downturned flange for engagement with the outer face of a flush tank wall, a portion adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the wall and a downwardly extending portion adapted to overlie the inner face of a flush tank wall, an arm fixed to the downwardly extending portion of the clip and extending rearwardly therefrom, said arm comprising relatively adjustable parts and being extensible, and an adjustable member positioned to engage the inner face of the front wall by which the angle at which said arm is supported may be varied.
