This'invention is an emergenc valve seat surfacing device, and has particular reference to a tool combination which is particularly adapted to surfacing operations on emergency valve seats used in Westinghouse'air brake installations.
The main object of the invention is to provide a tool combination which-is particularly adapted to the surfacing of two types oi valve seats.
Another object of the invention to provide an emergen cy valve seatsurfacing tool which can be quickly and conveniently ma'nipulated and which provided with micrometric means for adjusting the cutting tools-to a definite depth of out.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description is read on the drawing forming a part of this specification and which similar reference characters are used to indicate similar parts throughout the several views and of which: I

The tool consists of two component,- individual contrivances namely,- a combination centering and drivingmember for the valve seatand'a hand operated, adjustable surfacing tool therefor;
The combination centering and driving means consists essentially of .a guard 10 recessed as at adapted to fioatably center thevalve'by cooperation with bore 15. Suitable means for-chucking the member indicated at cated at 1'7.
The hand a rotary member is" provided as 16, the rotary member being i lldioperated, adjustable'surfacing tool consists essentially of a cylindrical spindle or plunger 18 provided adjacent one end with a slotfor retaining a tool bit 19. A threaded aperture is provided to receive a set screw 20 for securing the tool bit 19 in adjusted position. The end 21 of the spindle is adapted to rotatably and slidably cooperate with a bore in the hub 22-01 the valve seat Fig. 5. The spindle is provided with an annular shoulder 23 to provide a seat fora spring 24, the enlarged portion 25 terminating in a stop shoulder 26. A sleeve 27 is counterbored as at 28 to receive the spring 24 and slidably cooperate with the enlarged portion 25 of the spindle, the bore of the sleeve slidably cooperating with the main portion 18 of the spindle.
The sleeve terminates in a guard 29 which is adapted to be received within the guard 10 and is bored to receive and align the body of the valve seat 30. A slot 31 acts as a keyway to cooperate with the tool bit 19 to prevent rotational movement of the sleeve relative to the spindle and also provides clearance for the cutting edge of the bit. Separate keying means may be used between the spindle and sleeve if desired. The tool bit also-retains the sleeve on the spindle as will be noted in the drawing. I

The micrometric adjustment consists of. a sleeve 32 which is threadedly mounted on the sleeve 27 and which is provided with index markings 33- suitably numbered as shown at 34 and adapted; to register with an indicator mark 35 on sleeve 2'L'the end 36 of sleeve 32 being adapted to adj-ustably cooperate with shoulder 26- on spin,- dle'18.
It" willbe noted that spindle is has a plunger actionin the sleeve 27.
The tool or plunger is operated'by meansof a head which coincldently forms a surfacingtool for the valve Fig, G and consists of an annular flange 37 integral with spindle 18 and provided withxanexternal thread 38 for threadedly securing a cap or guard 39. Pivotally mounted on studs 40 area plurality of equi-angularly spaced cutting wheels 41 each having a plurality of radial cuttingedges 42. A bore 43' in spindle 18 slidably receives the stem 44 of' the valve Fig. 6, while a eounterb'ore 45 receives the hub 46, and a bore 4'Tinfthe cap receives the valve body 48, the face 49 of which is to be surfaced by the rotary cutters 41, stem 50 being suitably chucked in a rotating member. Suitable locking means for the cap 39* such as a set screw 51 is provided. For using this tool, pressure is applied axially by pressure of the hand against the face 52 of guard 29;
The portion of the device set forth in the last paragraph as related to the tool for surfacing the valve Fig. 6 is fully described and claimed in the copending application previously identified.
The cap 39 provides a guard and hand hold for applying axial pressure on the plunger and for preventing the tool from turning, as the valve seat is rotated by the spindle 17 through the centering and driving member or chuck 10.
Having described an operative device, it will be understood that variations in construction and arrangement of parts which are consistent with the appended claims may be resorted to without detracting from the spirit or scope of the inventionor sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim: V
l. A valve surfacing tool comprising a plunger provided with a tool bit receiving slot adjacent one end andisecuring means for the tool bit and centering means cooperating with the bore of the valve, a sleeve slidable on said plunger and resiliently urged toward said tool bit slot and terminating at one end in a guard adapted to receive and face-align the valve body, the other end having'threadedly mounted thereon, a grad- -uated sleeve, and a shoulder on said plunger comprising a spindle, a tool bit adjustably secured in spaced relation to one end and a head formed on the other end for hand exerted axial pressure on the spindle, said centering means comprising the one end of the spindle adapted to rotatably and slidably cooperate with the axial bore in the valve to axially center the valve seat, said adjustable means for limiting the travel of the surfacing means comprising a sleeve slidable and non-rotatable on the spindle, and resiliently urged toward the one end of the spindle, an annularshoulder formed on the other end of the spindle below the head, a collar threadedly cooperating with the other end of the sleeve and adapted for cooperation with the shoulder when the plunger is urged forward in the sleeve, said sleeve having an indicator, and said collar having peripheral index marks registrable with the indicator, and stop means integral with the one end of the sleeve adapted to cooperate with the face of the valve.
3. A valve seat surfacing tool comprising, surfacing means for the valve seat, centering means for the valve, adjustable means for limiting the travel of the surfacing means, and aligning means cooperable with the face of the valve when the limit of travel of the surfacing means is reached, said surfacing means for the valve seat comprising a spindle, a tool bit adjustably secured in spaced relation to one end and a head formed on the other end for hand exerted axial pressure on the spindle, said centering means comprising the one end of the spindle adapted to rotatably and slidably cooperate with the axial bore in the valve to axially center the valve seat, said adjustable means for limiting the travel of the surfacing 'means comprising a sleeve slidable and non-rotatable on the spindle, and resiliently urged toward the one end of the spindle, an annular shoulder formed on the other end of the spindle below the head, a collar threadedly cooperating with the other end of the sleeve and adapted for cooperation with the shoulder when the plunger is urged forward in the sleeve, said sleeve having an indicator, and said collar having peripheral index marks registrable with the indicator, and stop means integral with the one end of the sleeve adapted to cooperate with the face of the valve, and centering and driving means freely cooperating with the back of the valve for centering and driving the valve, said valve seat surfacing tool and said centering and driving means cooperating to retain the valve and permitting floating movement relative to the centering and driving means whereby alignment is dependent on the face and bore of the valve and the seat is formed true relative tothe face.

A valve seat surfacing-tool comprising, surfacing means for the valve seat, centering means for the valve, adjustable means for limiting the travel of the surfacing means, and aligning means cooperable with the faceof the valve when the limit of travel of the surfacing means is reached, said surfacing means for the valve seat comprising a spindle, a'tool bit adjustably secured in spaced relation to one end and a head formedon the other end for hand exerted axial pressure on the spindle, said centering means comprising the :one end of the spindle adapted to rotatably and slidably cooperate with the axial bore in the valve to axially center the valve seat, said adjustable means for limiting the travel of the surfacing means comprising a sleeve slidable and non-rotatable on the spindle and resiliently urged toward the one end of the spindle, an annular shoulder formed on the other end of the spindle below the head, a collar threadedly cooperating with the other end of the sleeve and adapted for cooperation with the shoulder when the plunger is urged forward in the sleeve, said sleeve having an indicator, and said collar havingperipheral index marks registrable with the indicator,
and stop means integral with the one end of the sleeve adapted to cooperate with the face of the valve, said stop means coincidently forming the aligning means, said stop means having an annular flange forming a guard about the periphery of the valve. 7 i
5, A valve seat surfacing tool comprising, surfacing means for the valve seat, centering means for the valve, adjustable means for limiting the said surfacing means for the valve seat comprising a spindle, a tool bit adjustably secured in spaced relation to one end and a head formed on the other end for hand exerted axial pressure on the spindle, said centering meansc'omprising the one end of the'spindle adapted to rotatably and .slidably cooperate with the axial bore in the valve to axially center the valve seat, said adjustable means for limiting the travel of the surfacing means comprising a sleeve slidable and non-ro- .ii tatable on the spindle and resiliently urged towardthe one end of the spindle, an annular shoulder formed on the other end of the spindle below the head, a collar threadedly cooperating with the other end of the sleeve and adapted for Hit ating with the back of the valve for centering and driving the valve, said valve seat surfacing tool and said centering and driving means cooperating to retain the valve and permitting floating movement relative to the centering and driving means whereby alignment is dependent on the face and bore of the valve and the seat is formed true relative to the face.
