' 5s claims. (cl. iev-13s) This invention relates to writing machines, and more particularly to a platen rollv therefor, capable of being easily and quicklytrasformed'from a positive feed pin type device into a smooth roll having an unbroken surface for friction feed operation and vice versa.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction, as well as the means and mode ofoperation of platen rolls for writing machines whereby they will not only be inexpensive in constructiomlout will be morefefiicient in operation, uniform in action, readily interchangeable with thev platen. rolls of writing: machines, and unlikely to get "out of repair. A further object of this invention is to provide a platen roll for a writing machine which may be readily and easily transformed from a positive pin feed type to a smooth friction type device and vice versa.

Referring to the drawing, 1 is the frame of the traveling carriage of a conventional form of writing machine of which 2 is the paper guide and 3 the rotary platen, about which superposed strips 0r sheets of writing material are progressively advanced past the writing or impact point of the movable type bars 5. Located beneath the platen roll 3 are the -usual friction feed rollers 6 6 mounted for movement into and out of frictional engagement with the periphery of the platen roll 3 by the adjustment of the finger trip lever 7 interconnected by a link 8 with the. adjustable mounting of the friction rollers 6. This construction is such that so long as the trip lever 'I is elevated, as shown in Fig. 2, the friction feed 95 rollers 6 will have operative feeding engagement with the periphery of the platen roll 3 to hold the record strips Orsheets 4 in contact therewith and effect progressive advancement of such writing material as the platen roll 3 is rotated. 100 By depressing the lever l to the position shown in Fig. 1, the mounting mechanism of the friction p rollers 6 is adjusted to withdraw the rollers 6 from their operative relation with nthe platen roll L3 thereby leaving the record material 4 freefor 105- adjustment relative to the platen roll or free for advance feeding movement under the influence of other positive type feeding means.
As thus far described', the construction is that y of a conventional typewriter of popular manuil veo invention, but has been shown and described merely for illustrative purposes in order that the construction and operation of the platen roll, forming the subject matter hereof, may be better understood.
The platen roll 3 comprises a cylinder or sleeve 3' having at each end thereof a radially grooved mounting disc or head 9 mounted upon the usual t'runnion shaft 10 journaled in the traveling carriage 1 and carrying 'at its extremities the `lrnobs l1 for manual rotation of the platen roll.
The mounting heads 9 are disposed with their radially grooved faces outwardly. Within the grooves 12 are mounted for radial reciprocatory movement a series of feeding pins 13, the outer ends of which are tapered i'or inse and easy engagement in holes punched in the record terial 4.
Surrounding the shaft lo beyond the cylinder heads 9, are stationarily held screw threaded sleeves 15 upon which are secured the actuating or control cains by which the feeding pins 13 are progressively extended and retracted as the plate'n roll or cylinder is rotated. These cams comprise stationary portions 16 flxedly secured 4upon the mounting-sleeve\15 and having thereon a laterally projecting dange 17 which engages in notches 18 in the 'reclprocatory pins 13. Mounted upon the stationary portion 13 of the carri structure is a movable section 19 slidable radially upon guides or ways 20 upon the stationary section 16 which engage within grooves 21 in such movable section. The movable section 19 also carries a laterally projecting iiange 23 complementary to the flange 1'? of the stationary cam section. The cam anges 17 and 23 vare beveled at their extremities and projecting lintc overlapping relation with each, both when the movable section 19 is extended and retracted, as is shown in Figs, 6 and 8. The cam harige 1'? of the stationary section 16 is substantially concentric with the shaft l0 as is also the cam iiange 23 of the movable section 19 when the section is in its retracted position, as shown in Fig. `3, but when extended as indicated in Figs. l and 6, this portion of the cam iange assumes an eccentric relation with the shaft 1G The overlapping beveled extremities of the flange portions 17 and 23 are of such length that the notched feed- .ing pins 13 will pass onto one of these sections before entirely leaving the other section when the cam parts are extended.

When the movable section i3 is retracted, as illustrated in Figs. 2 3, the pins will follow a uniform circular of such radius that the tapered ends the pins 13 will be maintained within the peri rai outline of the cylinder. However, when n., adjustable section 19 of the controlling devise is distended by the springs 24, the portion of the guide ange 23 carried thereby will be eccentric and will transmit to the feeding pins 13 correspondingly eccentric path of travel wherein the pins Wl be radially "projected beyond the peripheral contour of the cylinder during their passage over such eccentrically positioned portion 23 of the guide ange. This causes the pins 13 to be progressively extended and retracted as the cylinder is rotated, The cam portions 16 and 19 and their mounting sleeves 15 are so positioned rotatively that the feedingr pins 13 will be projected into operative engagement with the record material either approximately at the writing position or aiter the material has passed slightly beyond the writing position, as is illustrated in Fig. l. The shape of the guide iiange is such that as one pin is being extended or projected outwardly into engagement with the paper, other pins are being correspondingly retracted out of such engagement so that but few pins are simultaneously engaged therewith.

en it is desired to dispense with positive lill@ lli@ feeding of the record material and to employ the auxiliary friction rollers 6 for feeding the record material about the platen roll, the movable section of the actuating cam. is depressed against the tension ofits springs 2e to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and terminal caps 35, screw threaded upon the mounting sleeves 15 at each end of the cylinder, are adjusted axially thereon into abutting relation with the ends of the cylinder 3 as is shown in Fig. 3 wherein the marginal anges of the terminal caps 35 overhang the ends of the feeding pins 13, thus maintaining the feeding pins retracted wholly within the cylinder and presenting a smooth unbroken surface over which the writing operation is to be carried on. The terminal caps 35 are provided with knurled portions 36 `to facilitate their rotative adjustment upon the mounting sleeve 15. When the feeding pins 13 have been retracted and the terminal caps 35 adjusted into close abutting relation with the endsvof the cylinder 3, the latter becomes in effect a conventional form of smooth writing machine platen with which the auxiliary frictionrollers 6 co-operate to frictionally feed the writing material about the platen roll in the ordinary manner. However, by adjusting these terminal caps" 35 outwardly upon their mounting sleeves 15 to again les uncover the feeding pins 13;- thesprings424 by 15o their expansion will automatically project the movable section 19 of the controlling device radially outwardly upon the guides or Ways 20 vthereby causing the guide flange portion 23 to assume an eccentric relation and cause the feeding pins to be progressively projected beyond the peripheral contour of the cylinder through the space intermediate the terminal caps 35 and the end of the cylinder 3. Suitable set screws 26 are loosened, permitting the terminal caps 35 to rotate with the platen when the feeding pins l13 are wholly retracted within the cylinder, as disclosed in Fig. 3. When the terminal caps 35 are vadjusted outwardly as disclosed in Fig. 4, the set screws 26 engage recesses in the sleeve 15v so as to lock the sleeve 15 in a xed relation with respect to the typewriting machine, thereby causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of cam groove 4.4 located in the screw threaded member e6 threadedly engaging a collar 48 fixedly attached to the sleeve 51 mounted on the shaft 10.
.as may" best be seen from Fig. l5, the location of member 46 will cause the end of pin 40 to move either towards 'or away from the` center of the shaft, as the case may be, as the -end of pin e0' will follow the cam groove 44. Instead of the terminal cap 35 being screw threaded upon the sleeves 15, as disclosed in Fig. 4, suitable cylindrical caps 50 are screw threaded to the rotary member 47 carried by the shaft 10 so that when member 46 is rotated to retract the section 19, the cylindrical caps 50 may be rotat/ed with respect to member 47 so as to completely c over the path of the pins 13, concealing the pins the same as in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the section 19 may be withdrawn by rotating member 46 so .as to withdraw the pins 13 from the periphery of the groove, and the path of the pins may be completely covered by rotating the circular sleeves 5o in the proper direction so as to have these advance over the paths of the pins. When it is desired to again use the pin feeding mechanism, the cylindrical sleeve 50 is rotated in the opposite direction so as to move outwardly to permit the pins 13 to extend into slots formed intermediate the cylindrical sleeve 50 and the platen roller. When this has been done, member 46 may be rotated through 180 degrees so as to permit the section 19V to advance to the out position, thereby causing the pins 13 to extend beyond the periphery of the platen. In this modification, during operation of the typewriter the cylindrical cap rotates with the platen when in extended and contracted relation. In other respects the above modification operates in the manner similar to that disclosed in the preferred modificationidisclosed in Fig. 1.
From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described possessing the, particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportions, detail construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
While in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been described in language more e or less specic'as to structural features, it is to beunderstood that the invention is not limited to the specific features shown, but that the means and construction herein disclosed comprise the preferred form of several modes of putting the invention into effect, and the invention is therefore claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the legitimate and valid scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a writing machine, a rotary platen, a pin wheel feeding mechanism associated with said rotary platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism having an operative and an inoperative position, the pins of said pin wheel feeding mechanism extending through the periphery of the platen when in operative position, and means for holding the pins in either position, said means including a shield for sealing the pins within the periphery of said platen when in inoperative position.
' 2; In a writing machine, a platen, a pin wheel feeding mechanism for advancing the writing material past said platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism having an operative and an inoperative position, a shield completely enclosing said pins when in inoperative position, and auxiliary feeding means for advancing the writing material past the platen when said pin Wheel feeding mechanism is in inoperative position.
3. In a writing machine, a platen, a positive feeding mechanism for advancing the writing material past said platen, said positive feeding mechanism having an operative and an inoperative ppsition, a shield completely enclosing said tive feeding mechanism is in inoperative position.
4. A pin wheci feeding mechanism for advancing writing material past the platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including rotatively mounted pins and a cam mechanism for causing the pins to extend beyondthe periphery of the platen, said cam mechanism including a stationary cam and a movable cam, said movable cam having an out position and a retracted position, the pin wheel feeding mechanism being inoperative when said movable cam is in retracted position.
5. A pin Wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, said pin wheel'fee'ding mechanism including a pair of cam sectors, one of which includes an arcuate cam surface concentric with the platen, the other sector having an out position and an in position, said other sector when in in position having its cam surface substantially concentric with the stationary cam surface, and
when in out position cooperating with the stationary cam surface to form a substantially oval cam surface.
6. A pin wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including pins carried by said platen, and a pair of the pins to travel in a substantially circular path, and the other of which causes the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen so as to engage the Writing material.
7. In a pin wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of feeding pins arranged radially in said platen and a pair of cams for positioning the pins with respect to the periphery A of the platen, one of said cams including an arcuate portion for causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path Within the periphery of the platen, the other cam having two positions, one of which causes the pins to travel in a circular path Within the periphery of the platen 'and the other causing the pins to extend through the periphery of the platen so as to engage the Writing material, and resilient means for biasing said movable cam into one of said positions.
8. A pin wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including feeding pins radially disposed with respect to the platen, a pair of cams, one of which causes the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of said platen, and the other having two positions, one of which causes the pins to travel exclusively within the periphery of the platen and the second position causing the pins to project beyond the periphery of the platen, resilient means for biasing said cam into one of said positions, and positive means for holding the cam in the other position.
9. A pin wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said platen, a pair of cams for positioning the pins with respect to the periphery of the platen, one of said cams having a cam surface causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path Within the periphery of the platen, the other of which has an out positionvand an in position, the in position causing the pins to travel in a s ubl stantially circular path within the periphery of the platen, and the out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen for engaging the writing material, and resilient means for biasing said cam into the out position.
10. In a. pin wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said platen, a pair of cams for controlling the path of said pins, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of the platen, the other cam having an out position and an, in position, said other cam when in the out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen so as to engage the writing material, and when in the in positionV causing the pins to travel in a substantially circular path within the periphery of the platen, and positive means for .holding the second cam in the in position.
11. In a pin Wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, said feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to the platen, a pair of cams for controlling the path of said pins, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in a substantially arcuate path within the periphery of the platen, the other cam having an out position and an in position, said other cam when in the out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen so as to engage the Writing material, and when in the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path within the periphery of the platen, and a member for con suing the pms within the platen and for'hoidng in an arcuate path within the confines of the periphery of the platen, another lcam having an out position and an in position, said other cam when in the out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen, and when in the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path within the platen, and a third cam for controlling the position of said second cam.
13. A pin wheel feeding ,mechanism fora ro-n tary platen, said pin Wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of radially disposed pins, a plurality of cams, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of the platen, a second cam having an out position and an in position, said second cam when in the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path exclusively within the periphery of the platen, a third cam for controlling the position of said second cam, and a shield associated with said third cam for housing the pins when said second cam is in the in position so as to present a continuous writing surface to the writing material.
14. In a pin wheel feeding mechanism for a rotary platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said platen, a plurality of cams, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path Within the periphery of the platen, a second cam having an out position and an in position, said second cam when in the out position causing said pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen, and when in the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path exclusively within the periphery of the platen, a third cam having an eccentric cam surface, and a cam follower carried by said second cam engaging the cam surface of said third cam so that the position of said second cam is governed by said third cam.
15. In a writing` machine, a feed roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism associated with said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism having an operative and an inoperative position, the pins of said pin wheel feeding mechanism extending through the periphery of said roller when in the operative position, and means for holding the pins in either position, said means including,
a shield for housing the pins within the periphery of said .roller when in the inoperative position.
16. In a Writing machine,'a roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism associated with said roller for advancing the Writing material past the writing position, said pin wheel feeding mechanism cams, one of said cams causing the pins to travel having an operative and an inoperative position,

19. In a writing machine, a roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism carried by said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including feeding pins radially disposed with respect to said roller, a pair of cams, one of which causes the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of said roller, and the other having two positions, one of which causes the pins to travel exclusively within the periphery of the roller, and the other causing the pins to project beyond the periphery of the roller, resilient means for biasing said cam into one of said positions, positive means for holding it in the other position, and an auxiliary roller cooperating with said first roller in advancing the writing material past the writing position when said pin wheel feeding mechanism is in inoperative position.
20. In a writing machine, a roller, a. pin wheel feeding mechanism carried by said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect tov said roller, a pair oi. cams for positioning the pins with respect to the periphery of the roller, one of said cams having a cam surface causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of the roller, the other cam having an in position and an out position, the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circular path within the periphery of the roller, 'and the out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the roller for engaging the writing material, resilient means for biasing said movable cam into the out position, and an auxiliary roller cooperating with said first roller in supplying the writing material to the Ywriting 'position when said pin wheel feeding mechanism is in inoperative position.
21. In a writing machine, a roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism associated with said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said roller, a pair of cams for controlling the path of said pins, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of said roller, the other cam having an out position and an in position, said other cam when in an out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen so as to engage the writing material, and when in an in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circular path 'within the periphery ofthe platen, positive means for holding said second cam in the in position, and auxiliary rollers cooperating' with said first roller to advance the writing material past the writing position when said pin wheel feeding mechanism 'is in inoperative position.
22. In a writing machine, a roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism carried by said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said roller, a pair of cams for controlling the path of saidpins, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in a substantially arcuate path within the periphery of the platen, the other cam having an out position and an in position, said other cam when in the out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen so as to engage the writing material and advance it beyond the writing position, and in the in position, causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path within the periphery of the platen, and a member for confining the pins within the platen and for holding said movable cam member in the in position.
23. In a writing machine, a roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism for said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanismincluding a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said roller, and a plurality of cams, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the confines of the periphery of the roller, another cam having an out position and an in position, said other cam when in the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path within the periphery of said roller, and when in. the out position causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the roller, and a. third cam for controlling the position of said second cam.
24. In a writing machine, a roller, a pin wheel feeding vmechanism associated with said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of radially disposed pins carried by said roller, a plurality of cams, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of the platen, a second cam having an out position and an in position, said second cam when in the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path within the periphery of said roller, a third cam for controlling the position of said second cam, a shield associated with said second cam for enclosing the pins when saidv second cam is in the in position, and auxiliary feeding means associated with said roller for advancing the Writing material past the writing position when said second -cam is in the in position.
25. In a writing machine, a feed roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism associated with said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said roller, a plurality of cams, one of said camscausing the pins to travel in an arcuate path within the periphery of said roller, a second cam having an out position and an in position, said second cam when in the out position causing said pins to extend beyond the periphery of the platen, and when in the in position causing the pins to travel in a substantially circumferential path exclusively within the periphery of said roller, a third cam having aneccentric cam surface and a cam follower carried by said second camengag'ing the cam surface of said third cam so that the position of said second cam is governed by said third cam.

In a writing machine, a roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism associated with said roller, said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said roller, and a non-rotatable cam having an out position and an in position, said cam engaging the .pins and causing the pins to move lao in a path within the periphery of the roller when in the in position and causing the pins to extend beyond the periphery of the roller when in the out position.

In a writing machine, a pin feeding mechanism, said pin feeding mechanism having an operative and an inoperative position, said pin feeding mechanism including a plurality Vof pins, some of which engage the paper when in operative position, and a cam having a contracted position and an expanded position, said cam when in the expanded position causing some of said pins to engage the paper,Y and when in the contracted position guiding the pins in a path out of contact with the paper. e f

30. nIn a writing machine, a roller, a pin wheel feeding mechanism carried by said roller, said mounted in said roller, and a pair of cams for positioning the pins with respect to the periphery of the roller, one of said cams causing the pins to travel in'a path concentric with and within the periphery of said roller, the otherV cam having two positions one of which causes the pins to said pin wheel feeding mechanism including a' plurality of feeding pins; arranged radially in said roller, and a pair of -cams for positioning the pinsrwith respect to the periphery of the roller, onev of said cams including an arcuate portion for causing the pins to travei in an arcuate path within the-periphery of the roller, the other cam having two positions, one of which causes the.VY pins to travel in a circular path Within the periphery of the rollerfand the other causing the pins to extend through the peripheryoi. the roller so as to engage the writing material, and resilient means for biasing said movable cam into one of said positions.

The combination with a revoluble platen roll for a writing machine, including axially adjustable sections, retractible paper engaging means mounted within the roll and projectable radially beyond the periphery-'thereof intermediate the axially adjustable sections, said paper engaging means being retained in retracted position by the relative adjustment oi.'` said sections toward each other.

A platen roll for a writing machine, a series of radially disposed feeding pins carried thereby for engagement in punched holes in record matrial for positively advancing the material about the platen roll, non-rotatable means for progressivelyprojecting the pins into engagement with the material and retracting said pins by the rotation of the roll, and means for maintaining all of the pins in retracted position to permit the use of the roll for frictional feeding of the material.
36.17A platen roll for a writing machine, a series of radially disposed feeding pins carried thereby for engagement in punched holes in record material for positively advancing the material about the platen roll, and a non-rotatable mounting for the pins, said mounting being expansible and contractible so that the pins may be renderedY inoperative upon contraction of said mounting.

A revoluble platen roll for a writingzmachine, a series of reciprocatory feeding pins carried thereby for engagement in punched holes in record material being fed about the platen roll for positively advancing such material, non rotatable means for progressively reciprocating the pins into engaging positions beyond the periphery of the roll, and a mechanism causing said means to actuate the pins in a path within the periphery of the roll, whereby the rollt may be used for frictionally feeding material independently of the pins; e

A platen roll for a writing machinerhaving a pin feeding device having operative and inoperative positions, including anY axially adjustable section, said section rotating in unison with said platen when in one position, and means forY Ypreventing the rotation of said section with said platen when said section is in the other position, said section being in one of said positions when the pin feeding device is operative and in the other position when the feeding device is inoperative.

In a writing machine, a rotary platen, a pin wheel feeding mechanism associated with said platen, adapted to feed the writing material circumferentially 4around said platen, said pin wheel feeding mechanism having an operative and an inoperative position, the pins of said pin wheel feedingv mechanism extending beyond the periphery of said platen when in operative position, and non-rotatable means mounted within in either position, said means being adapted to adjust all the pins below the periphery of the platen when in inoperative position. s Y

In a writing machine, a rotary platen, a pin Wheel feeding mechanism associated with Mil Lio' i 4tively connected thereto and adapted to engage said platen, said'pin wheel feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins radially disposed with respect to said platen, means including a stationary member and an adjustable memben for adjusting the pin wheel feeding mechanism to operative position with the pins extending beyond the periphery of the platen, said means being adapted to retract the pins wholly below the periphery of the platen to inoperative position.
41. In a typewriting machine having 'a rotaryv the circumference of the platen and adapted to b e retracted to inoperative position when the pins are wholly beneath the peripheral surface of the platen.

In a writing machine, a pin feeding mechanism, said pin feed mechanism having an operative and an inoperative position, said pin feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins, some of which engage the paper when in operative position, and adjustable means simultaneously engaged by all the pins for changing the feed pins to either operative or inoperative position, below thesurface of the platen.

In a writing machine, a platen, a pin feeding mechanism lassociated with said platen, said pin feeding mechanism including a plurality of pins, and a non-rotatable adjusting means within the platenhaving a relative movement with respect to said pins, said adjusting means having two positions,` one position guiding the pins in a path entirely below the writing surface of said platen, and the other position of said means causing the pins to performin a path passing beyond the surface of said platen.

The combination with a revoluble platen for a writing machine, around which paper is fed,.including axially adjustable feeding means associated therewith, said paper feeding means being'retractible to inoperative feeding position below the writing surface of the platen and being projectable radially to operative position beyond the writing surface of said platen, said feeding means adapted to be locked in either 4position for the purposes described.

A rotary platen for a writing machine including a radially disposed pin carried by the platen engageable in spaced holes in the record material fed about the platen for positively advancing the record material, said pin .having manually operated means having a "guide forming .-a closed loop for adjusting it to operative or inoperative position. above or entirely below the writing surface of the platen, said means being of`a selective character.

A rotary platen for a writing machine, a series of radially disposed pins associated therewith for engagement in punched holes in record material for positively advancing the material about'the platen, meansfcommon to all the pins for progressively projecting ,the pins into engagement with the record material and retracting said pins from engagement therewith, and means common to all the .pins formaintaining the same in retracted position to permit the use of the platen for friction'al feeding of record material.

49.- A platen roll for a writing machine, including an axially adjustable section, a guide carried by said roll, said guide having an in position and an out position, retractible feeding pins associated with said platen roll and guided by the guide, said feeding pins engageable in spaced holes in the record material fed above the platen roll for positively advancing the record .material when said guide is in the out position, said feeding pins being covered by said adjustable section when the l guide is in the in position, so as to present an uninterrupted writing surface when the guide is in the in position.
