MALGOM J. MCPHE RSON, OF WEST CAMPBELL, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,159, dated October 16, 1877; application filed August 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALCOM J. MoPHER- SON, of West Campbell, county of Ionia, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a gate that may be raised vertically before being turned on its hinges, to clear it from snow or other obstruct-ions.
In the drawing, A A are the gate-posts.- B are rods secured to the post A, for receiving eyes 0, that project from the vertical post a of the triangular gate-support D. This support consists of a horizontal bar, I), and two similar parallel diagonal braces, c, which are attached to the post a. The gate E, which consists of a number of parallel bars, d, of wood, secured A to stiles e, is supported and guided by the support D, its upper bar cl resting 011 the horizontal bar I).
A pulley, F, is journaled in a diagonal mortise in the post A, and a rope or chain, f, is attached tothe post a, and runs over the pulley, and is attached to a weight, g, which counterbalances the gate and its support.
The ends .of two of the bars forming the gate extend beyond the outer stile, and, when the gate is closed, enter mortises in the post A, forming fasteners or supports h for the end of the gate.
When it is required to open the gate, the projecting ends h are withdrawn from the post A by sliding the gate a short distance. It is then raised and turned, or it may bemoved back on its support beyond the post A, and turned or not, as may be desired. It may be raised and fastened without turning, when it will allow the smaller animals, such as sheep, hogs, &c., to pass under, while it will prevent the escape of the larger animals.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with post A and gate d e, of the support a I) 0, having eyes O, that work on rods B, and connected with a Weight, g, by a ropepassing over the post-pulley F, as shown and described.
