31 Claims. (Cl. 197-14) The invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines and more particularly to printing instrumentalities therefor.
One object of the invention is to facilitate and expedite the operation of the machine. To this end there is provided power means, including a solenoid, which is energized at each action of a key-lever, to actuate an operating bar and thereby operate the type bars.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a series of actuating levers extending downwardly from the type bars the latter being radially arranged to print at a common printing point against a platen. The actuating levers fan outwardly, and are connected at their lower ends, with horizontally disposed connecting elements.
-The connecting elements are parallel and extend to the back of the machine where there is located the operating bar with which any one of the connecting bars may be rendered eifective by suitable key-levers co-operating with the forward ends of said connecting levers.
After a connecting lever is brought into cooperation with the operating bar, by the depression of its associated key-lever, a switch is closed by a universal bar operable by any one of the connecting levers to energize the solenoid to actuate the operating bar and thus actuate the type bar of the depressed key-lever.
Provision is made whereby the connecting levers become disconnected from the operating bar so that they and the connected type bars may return independently of the operating bar after printing and also independently of the key lever.
A feature of the invention relates to means whereby the blow of the type-bar, produced by the power means, may be varied for manifolding.

Fig. 5 is an operating view showing one of the key levers depressed to connect the associate connecting element or bar with the power means;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing the type-bar actuated and the instant of release of the connecting element from the actuating bar; and
Fig. 7 illustrates how the connecting bar may return, after its release, to return the type bar independently of the operating bar and independently of the key lever.

The machine comprises a main frame 10 including posts 11 to the upper ends of which is secured a top plate 12..
Type bars 13 are supported on a curved fulcrum rod 14 in a segment 15 suitably secured to the top plate 12. The type bars are arranged in radial slots 16 so as to print at a common point, against a platen 1'7, when operated. They may be operated by actuating levers 18 which may be connected thereto by links 18- and the levers 18 are supported on a curved fulcrum rod 19 supported in a slotted cross bar 20 also secured to the main frame 10. Key levers 21 are supported in slots 22 of a cross bar 22, secured to the main frame, and they are actuable about fulcrum rods 23, suitably supported in said cross bar, to raise their rear ends by the depression of the character keys 24. The rear ends of the key levers 21 are provided with pins 25 engaging in slots 26 in the forward ends of connecting elements or bars 27, so that upon the actuation of any one of the key levers the associated connecting bar,
27 is actuated about a fulcrum rod 28, supported in a slotted cross bar 28, against the action of a return spring 29, to swing a hook 30 into cooperative relation with an operating bar 31 (Fig. 5) secured to a rock shaft 32 supported in the main frame 10; the motion of the connecting bar 27, about the fulcrum 28, being limited by its free end 27 which strikes the bar 31.
During the latter part of the actuation of the connecting bar 27 by the key levers, or in other words, after the hook has been brought into the path of a shoulder 31 of the bar 31, the latter is actuated, in a manner hereinafter described, to draw the active connecting bar or link 27 rearwardly to operate the associate actuating lever 18 through the medium of a pin 33, on the bar 27, engaging in a slot 34 of said lever, thus swinging the type bar upwardly and rearwardly; as in Fig. 6, to print against the platen 17 upon which the work sheet, not shown, is supported in the usual manner, the connecting bar 27 being provided with an elongated slot 27 to permit longitudinal movement thereof on the fulcrum by the spring 29 as in Fig. 7 to restore the type bar 13 to normal through the associated lever 18.
So as not to interfere with the return of the type bar, which would otherwise result from a slow removal of the finger from the depressed key lever,provision is made to permit the return of the type bar independently of the key lever. To this end the hook of each connecting bar 2'7 is pivotally supported by a stud, on its connecting bar and is held in proper relation to the connecting bar by a spring 41 which engages an ear 42 of the hook to press said hook downwardly; .said ear engaging the upper edge of the connecting bar to limit its downward movement relatively thereto. Thus it will be understood that the hook may yield against the action of the spring, 41, as in Fig. 7, should the key lever 21 remain depressed while the connecting bar 2'7 is returning the type bar. As soon as the finger is removed from the actuated key the spring 29 swings the connecting bar 27 about its fulcrum 28 to restore the associated key lever.
The actuation of the operating bar 36 is effected upon the depression of any one of the key levers 21. To this end there is provided a universal bar 45 operable, by any one of the connecting bars 27, about the axis of a rock shaft 46, to which the universal bar is secured, and which rock shaft is pivotally supported in the main frame 10. Said universal bar when depressed, against the action of a return spring 47, closes a switch 48 to close a circuit including a source of electrical power 49 (Fig. 4), conductor 50, main switch 50 the coil 51 of a solenoid 52, conductor 53, switch 48 and a ground 54. The closing of the switch 48 to energize the coil 51 takes place after the hook 30 has been moved into the path of the shoulder 31 of the operating bar 31 so as to insure actuation of the connecting bar 27 by said operating bar.
When the coil 51 is energized it sucks in a plunger 55 to rock the operating bar 31 through the medium of a link 56 connecting said plunger with an arm 57 secured to the shaft 32 to which the actuating bar is connected. The movement of the operating bar to its eflective position may be limited by a stop 56 engaged by an arm 59 secured to the shaft 32. When the key-lever returns the switch 18 opens to de-energize the solenoid and a spring 60 connected to the arm 59 becomes eifective to return the operating bar 31 to normal where it is arrested by a stop 61 engaged by the arm 59. The universal bar as is arrested in its normal position by a stop 62 against which it is held by the spring 47.
To vary the impact of the type bars in accord ance with the number of sheets being manifolded, provision is made to vary the action of the solenoid to increase or decrease its effect on the type bars. To this end the coil 51 may be adjusted axially of the plunger 55 in a manner similar to that illustrated in my application No. 495,872, filed November 15, 1930. The coil 51 is supported in a field frame 65 for the magnetic flux of said coil. The frame 65 in turn is supported by screws 66 and 67 on fixed brackets 68 secured to a bar 69 on -the main frame 10, the screws 66 and 67 being threaded into the frame 65 and passing through slots 70 in the brackets 68 in which they may move back or forth during the adjustment of the coil.
The coil 51 may be adjusted by means including a finger piece, (not shown) which may be like that shown in the above mentioned application, secured to a shaft 71, the inner end of which is supported in a fixed bracket 71, to rock said shaft and thus swing back and forth the lower end of an arm 72 secured thereto. Connection is made from the arm to the coil 51 by a slot '73 in said arm into which extends a pin 74 from a bracket 75 secured to the coil frame 65.
After the coil has been adjusted to the desired position it may be secured in place by the screw 67 which extends outwardly to the side of the machine where it maybe provided with a finger piece (not shown) for manipulation.
Some of the advantageous features of the machine, in addition to those already pointed out, are the following:.
The connecting bars 27 are all alike and are arranged parallel to each other so that a direct rearward pull may be effected on them to actuate the sub-levers 18.
The sub-levers l8 fan downwardly and outwardly -with respect to each other from the type bars to the connecting bars 27 and the point of connection of each sub-lever with the type bar and the connecting bar 27 are in the same plane with the fulcrum of the sub-lever so as to avoid any twisting action of the sub-lever, while 'operat in'g on its fulcrum.
The fulcrums 23 for the key-levers 21 of the various banks of keys, are arranged with respect to each other as in Fig. 1, so as to have a uniform dip on all of the keys; the depression of each key being small as compared with that of an ordinary typewriting machine. The pressure on the keys is considerably less than that required in an ordinary typewriting machine since the type bars are not operated thereby, but merely operate the connecting levers 27 to move them into engagement with the operating bar 31 and close the switch 48. Thus it will be understood that because of the minimum of work required from the operator the speed at which the machine may be operated by him is much greater than that of an ordinary typewriting machine.
While certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, ar-
rangement, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:-
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strike against said platen, actuating levers connected with the type bars, links to operate said actuating levers, means common to all of said links to support them independent of the actuating levers, an operating bar common to all of said links, an electrical device to actuate said bar, key-levers one associated with each link to engage it directly and actuate it to connect the link with the operating bar, a universal bar operable by the active one of the links, and a switch actuable by the universal bar to effect actuation of the electrical device.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination and of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strike against said platen, actuating levers connected with the type bars, links to operate said actuating levers, a common fulcrum to support all of said links, an operating bar common to all of said links, an electrical device to actuate said bar, key levers one associated with each link to engage it directly and actuate it to'connect the link with the actuating bar, a universal bar operable by any one of the links, a switch actuable by the universal bar to effect actuation of the electrical device, and means to release the link from the actuating bar to, permit the return of said type bar independently of said actuating bar, and independently of the operated key lever.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strikev against said platen, actuating levers connected with the type bars, links to operate said actuating levers, an operating bar common to all of said links, an electrical device to actuate said bar, key levers one associated with each link to connect the link with the operating bar, a universal bar operable by any one of the links, a switch actuable by the universal bar to efiect actuation of the electrical device, said operating bar having a shoulder, hooks on said links to co-operate with said shoulder, and a cam on said operating bar to disengage the hook from the shoulder to permit the return of the link and the connected type bar.
4. In atypewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strike against the front of said platen, upwardly extending actuating levers connected at their upper ends with the type bars, links connected to the lower ends of said actuating levers to actuate the latter, an operating bar common to all of said links, a solenoid to actuate said bar, key-levers one associated with each link to actuate and connect the link with the operating bar, means operable by said links and during the connecting movements thereof to efiect energization of the solenoid, said solenoid comprising a coil and a plunger actuable thereby. and means to facilitate an adjustment of the coil lengthwise of the plunger to vary the force of the solenoid and thus vary the blow of the type bars against the platen.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strike upwardly and rearwardly against said platen, downwardly extending actuating levers connected to said type bars, a fulcrum for said levers intermediate their ends, power means at the l rear of the machine, connecting elements exbar to print against said platen.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a group of radially arranged type bars to swing upwardly and rearwardly against said platen, type bar actuating means including a power actuated bar at the rear of the machine, horizontally disposed connecting bars extending forwardly from the power actuated bar, and upwardly extending levers connecting the type bars with the connecting bars, supporting means for the connecting bars, and key levers to engage the connecting bars to swing them about their support to carry the rear ends into co-operative relation with the power actuated bar so that the actuating bar may be drawn rearwardly by the power actuated bar to operate the type bar. I
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strike upwardly and rearwardly against said platen, downwardly extending actuating levers connected to said type bars, a fulcrum for said levers intermediate their ends, power means at the *rear of the machine, connecting elements extending rearwardly from the actuating levers to the power means, a fulcrum for said connecting elements, key-levers one for each connecting element whereby the associated connecting element may be swung about its fulcrum to connect it with said power'means, an electro magnet, a switch, asource of power, and a universal bar operable by the connecting elements to close said switch to connect the source of power with the electro-magnet to energize the latter to actuate the power means and thus operate the type bar through the effective connecting element.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a series of radially arranged type bars to strike against the front of said platen, a series of horizontally arranged connecting bars extending parallel to each other, means intermediate the ends of said bars to support them, actuating levers extending downwardly from the type bars and fanning outwardly relatively to each other to the connecting bars, power means, and key-levers to actuate the connecting elements to swing them one at a time about their intermediate means into cooperative relation with the power means.
i 9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a series of radially arranged type bars to strike against the front of said platen, a. series of horizontally arranged connecting bars extending parallel to each other, means intermediate the ends of said bars to support them,means including actuating levers to connect the type bars with the connecting bars, an actuating bar, spring pressed hooks on said connecting bars, key levers to actuate said connecting bars to swing the hooks into co-operative relation with the actuating bar, the actuating bar being subsequently effective to draw the active connecting bar, a cam on the actuating bar to efiect disengagement of the hook from the actuating bar, saidhook being effective to yield after its release against the action of said spring to permit the return of the type bar while the actuating bar is in its operated position and while the keylever remains operated.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a seriesof radially arranged type bars to strike against-said platen, an operating bar, means including connecting links actuable by the operating bar to actuate the type bars, key levers to actuate the connecting links to render them efiective, a solenoid located under the machine to actuate the operating bar, said solenoid including a. coil, and a plunger in said coil, a fixed frame to support the coil, the plunger being connected to said operating bar, and means to adjust the coil on said frame and axially of the plunger to vary the blow of the type bars against I against the front of said platen, upright actuating levers for said type bars, a fulcrum for said actuating levers, intermediate their ends, an operating bar at the rear of the machine, horizontally disposed bars extending rearwardly from the lower ends of said actuating levers to said operating bar, a fulcrum for said horizontally disposed bars, key levers to engage the forward ends of the horizontally disposed bars to actuate them about their fulcrum to connect them one at a time with the operating bar, and means under the control of the key levers to effect the actuation of said operating bar.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strike against the front of said platen, an operating bar, power means to actuate said bar, connecting levers one for each type bar, a fulcrum for said connecting levers, means operable by each connecting lever to actuate its associated type bar, key levers one for each connecting lever by which the connecting levers may be actuated about their fulcrums individually to connect them with the operating bar, means under the control of the key levers to render efiective the power means, the connecting lever being movable longitudinally of the operating bar to actuate the associated type bar, means to disconnect the actuated connecting lever from the operating bar, and return springs one for each connecting lever, each spring being effective to return the associated connecting lever longitudinally to restore the connected type bar, each spring being also effective to swing the connecting lever about its fulcrum to restore the associated key lever to normal.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to strike against the front of said platen, upright actuating levers for said type bars, a fulcrum for said actuating levers intermediate their ends, an operating bar at therear of the machine, horizontally disposed bars extending rearwardly from the lower ends of said actuating levers to said operating bar, a fulcrum for said horizontally disposed bars, the forward ends of thehorizontally disposed bars having longitudinal slots, key levers one for each horizontal bar, a pin on each key'lever extending into the slot of the associated horizontal bar to form a connection whereby the horizontal bar may be actuated about its fulcrum to connect it withthe operating bar, the
slot being elongated to permit longitudinal movement of the horizontal bar with its connection with the key lever, each upright lever having a slot therein, a pin on each horizontal bar to' engage in the last named slot to connect the upright lever with the horizontal bar, the slot in each upright lever being elongated so that the pin may move upwardly therein when the associated horizontal bar is being actuated by the key lever, and means under the control of the key levers to effect an actuation of the operating bar.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of type bars, an operating bar, actuating devices between each type bar and the operating bar, each actuating device including a connecting element, each connecting element having a hook pivoted thereon, and a spring tending to hold the hook in an effective position on the connecting element, key levers to move the connecting elements into co-operative relation with the operatin bar, means under the control of the key levers to effect the actuation of the operating bar, means to effect disengagement of the hook from the operating bar, and a spring to return the connecting element, said hook being adapted to yield against the action of its associated spring to enable the hook to slide over the operating bar.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of type bars, an operating bar, actuating devices between each type bar and the operating bar, each actuating device including a connecting element, each connecting element having a hook pivoted thereon, and a spring tending to hold the hook in an effective position on the connecting element, key levers to move the connecting elements into co-operative relation with the operating bar, a shaft to support said operating bar, a shoulder on said operating bar to be engaged by the hooks of the connecting elements, and means under the control of the key levers to effect an actuation of the operating bar about the axis of said shaft, the operating bar having a curved surface with which the ends of the connecting elements co-operate to arrest them when operated by the key levers, said shoulders being adapted to move out of engagement with the hook to permit the return of the connecting element and its associated type bar independent of the operating bar, the hook being adapted to slide over the curved surface and yield against the action of its associated spring while the connecting element is returning and the key lever is still in its depressed position.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to swing upwardly and rearwardly against said platen, intermediate elements connected to the type bars, horizontally arranged links connected to the intermediate elements and extending rearwardly therefrom, a power driven operating element common to all of said links and located at their rear ends, a fulcrum for said links, and key levers one connected to the forward end of each link by which the link may be swung about its fulcrum to connect the rear end with the operating element so that the link may be drawn rearwardly thereby to actuate the connected type bar.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to swing upwardly and rearwardly against said platen, intermediate elements connected to the type bars, horizontally arranged links connected to the intermediate elements and extending rearwardly therefrom, a power driven operating element common to all of said links and located at their rear ends, a fulcrum for said links, key levers one connected to the forward end of each link by which the link may be swung about its fulcrum to connect the rear end with the operating element,,an electrical device to actuate the operating element, a switch electrically connected with the electrical device, and a universal bar operable by any one of the links to close said switch and thus effect the actuation of the operating element to thereby draw the connected link rearwardly to actuate the type bar associated with said link, and means to release the link from the operating element to permit a return of the type bar independently of the operating element and independently of the operated key lever.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type bars to print against said platen, actuating devices connected with said type bars, an operating element, pivoted connecting elements extending horizontally from the actuating devices to said operating element, key levers one associated with each connecting element to swing the rear end of the latter into co-operative relation actuate it to connect 'said connecting elements one at a time with said operating element, means operable by the key levers to subsequently effect the actuation of the operating element to actuate the type bar associated with the effective connecting element, and springs one associated with each connecting element to return the connecting element and its associated type bar and also its associated key lever.
, 20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type barsto print against said platen, actuating devices connected with said type bars, an operating element, connecting devices extending from the actuating elements to said operating element, each connecting device having mounted thereon a spring pressed hook, key levers to actuate said connecting devices to render the hooks efiective with said operating element, means operable by the key levers to subsequently efiect the actuation of the operating element to actuate the type bar associated with the effective connecting element, means common to all of the hooks to actuate any one of them to disengage the active connecting device from the operating element while the connecting device is held by the key lever in its actuated position, and means to restore said connecting element to normal- 21. V electro-magnet under the control of the key levers to effect the actuation of said operating element connecting elements with the operating element, said electro-magnet being located under the machine manually operated means extending from the outside of the machine to said electro-magnet to adjust itto vary its force in accordance with the number of sheets being manifolded, and manually operated means to lock the electro-magnet in its adjusted position.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type actions including type bars to print against said platen, power means, each type action including also a connecting element, and keyv levers of the first order located in front of the connecting elements, one of said key levers being connected at its rear end with each connecting element to render the latter eifective with the power means, the key levers extending rearwardly from various banks of keys in the key board, a plurality of fulcrums for said key levers one for the key levers of each bank to provide for a uniform dip on all the key levers, all of the connecting elements being of equal size and same construction and being operable through the same extent-gay the power means.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination front of said platen, intermediate actuating levers subsequently to the connection of any one of saidof a platen, type bars to print against said platen, type actions for said type bars, each type action including a horizontally disposed connecting element, power means located under the connecting elements, and key levers, each key lever having a pin-and-slot connection with the corresponding one of the connecting elements so that the latter may be swung into co-operative relation with the power means, the pin-and-slot connection permitting also a longitudinal movement of the active connecting element independently of the key lever while said connecting element is being operated by the power means.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type bars to print against said platen, intermediate actuating levers extending downwardly from the type bars, horizontally disposed connecting elements having pin-and-slot connections with lower ends of the intermediate levers, power means located under the connecting elements, and key levers, each key lever having a pin-and-slot connection with the corresponding one of the connecting elements so that the latter may be swung into co-operative relation with the power means, the last mentioned pin-and-slot connection permitting also a longitudinal movement of the active connecting element independently of the key lever while said connecting element is being operated by the power means, the slots of both pin-and-slot connections extending at right angles to each other so that one of said slots permits the swinging movement of the connecting element without effecting the associated intermediate element, and the other slot permits the longitudinal movement 01 the connecting element without effecting the depressed key lever. 25. In a'typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to swing upwardly and rearwardly to print against the extending downwardly from the type bars, horizontally disposed connecting elements, a single member to support all of the connecting elements for pivotal and bodily movement thereon, power means, key levers, a connection between each key lever and the corresponding connecting elements whereby-the connecting element may be swung into co-operative relation with the power means, and a connection between the connecting element and the associated intermediate lever whereby the connected type bar may be actuated when said connecting element is operated by the power means, the connection of each key lever and the connection of each intermediate lever with the connecting element permitting the key lever to actuate the connecting element without efiecting the intermediate lever and permiting the connecting element to actuate the intermediate lever without efiecting the depressed key lever and a plurality of return springs one for each connecting element to return it and the associated intermediate lever type bar and key lever.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type actionsincluding type bars to print against said platen, power means inclu'ding an operating element, each type action including a slide, the operating element being common to all or the slides, a hook on each slide, means to support the slides for pivotal and bodily movement, key levers one for each slide by which the latter may be swung to carry its hook into the path of the operating bar so that the slide may be actuated by the operating bar, and posi. tively acting means associated with the power means to be actuated thereby and common to all of the hooks to disengage the active one from the operating bar to permit the return of the slide and its associated type bar independently of the operating bar.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type bars to print against said platen, horizontally disposed key levers, fulcrums for the key levers located intermediate their ends, horizontal bars extending rearwardly from said key levers, said horizontal bars being fulcrumed intermediate their ends, hooks on the rear ends of the horizontal bars, an operating bar extending transversely of and located under the rear ends of the horizontal bars, each horizontal bar being operable about its fulcrum by the associated key lever to carry the hook into a co-operative relation with the operating bar, and intermediate devices connected with the type bars, said intermediate devices being associated with the forward ends of the horizontal bars to be operated thereby when they are moved bodily by the operating bar.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, radially arranged type bars to swing upwardly and rearwardly against said platen, power means to actuate any one of the type bars, horizontally arranged connecting elements extending parallel to each other from the power means, intermediate levers extending upwardly from the connecting elements to the type bars, devices connecting the upper ends of the intermediate levers to the type bars, devices connecting the lower ends of the intermediate levers with the connecting elements, fulcrum points for the intermediate levers, each intermediate lever having an arm extending upwardly from its fulcrum point, and an arm extending downwardly from its fulcrum point, the points of connection of the connecting devices with the upper ends of the intermediate levers being arranged in an are which is concentric with an arc in which the pivot points of the type bars are arranged, the devices connecting the lower ends of the intermediate levers with connecting elements being arranged in a straight line transversely of the machine, the fulcrum points of the intermediate levers being arranged in a curve of a greater radius than the curve in which the connecting points of the devices at the upper ends of the intermediate levers are arranged, the ratios of length of the lower arm to the length of the upper arm in all of said intermediate levers being equal, and the two points of connection of each intermediate lever being in the same plane fore-and-aft of the machine with the fulcrum point of the same intermediate lever, and key levers one for each connecting element to connect it with the power means.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a plurality of type actions, power means to actuate said type actions, each type action including a type bar and a connecting element, means to support the connecting elements for pivotal movement and for longitudinal movement, key levers one for each connecting element to swing it about the supporting means to connect it with the power means so that the latter may actuate the active connecting element longitudinally to actuate the associated type bar, means to release the active connecting element from the power means when the connecting element reaches its operated position, springs one for each connecting element, each spring being efiective to return the connecting element longitudially and to swing it about said supporting means to restore it to normal, each type bar and each key lever being connected with the connecting element to be-restored to normal through the medium of the connecting element by its associated spring.
30. In a typewriting machine, the combination of radially arranged type bars to swing upwardly and rearwardly to print at a common point, actuating levers of the first order extending downwardly from the type bars, horizontally disposed actuating links connected at their forward ends with the lower ends of the actuating levers, power means common to all of said links and arranged at the rear end thereof and normally out of engagement therewith, and horizontally disposed key levers of the first order one connected to each link and whereby the link may be actuated pivotally to carry its rear end into engagement with the power means so that the latter mav actuate the active link longitudinally to thus acuate the type bar through the connected actuating lever.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination of radially arranged type bars to swing upwardly and rearwardly to print at a common point, actuating levers of the first order extending downwardly from the type bars, horizontally disposed actuating links connected at their forward ends with the lower ends of the actuating levers, power means common to all of said links and arranged at the rear ends thereof and normally out of engagement therewith, horizontally disposed key leversjtof the first order one connected to each link and whereby eachlink may be actuated pivotally to carry its rear end into engagement with the power means so that the latter may actuate the active link longitudinally to thus actuate the type bar through the connected actuating lever, means to release the active link from the power means, and springs one for each link to restore the link and the connected key lever and also the connected actuating lever to normal.
